Booked Bologna for the back end of January, my girlfriend has been pining for an Italian trip having never been. Between March-May of 2022 I ended up spending a lot of time there first for @SemperEadem’s birthday, then I had a family holiday booked near Lecce in May. Coincidentally, we drew Roma a few days before so I made the intrepid 7 hour train journey hungover out of my mind. I booked first class thinking I’d get more than the paltry biscuit they gave me. Not fancied going back for a while but a Cremonese trip has already been priced in.

Perhaps she’s starting to appreciate a morsel of Vardy’s ability to do the unlikely.

@CosbehFox @bovril what would you recommend?

Ravenna - About 1 hr 15 min by train. The mosaics are the greatest early medieval art in Italy I think.

Might as well go to Florence, like Venice it's not that hard to get away from crowds. San Marco is one of my favourite places in Europe.

Always thought it'd be great to explore the bit between Bologna and La Spezia. I imagine lots of pretty unspoiled villages in quiet valleys. No idea how to get there with public transport but I'm willing to guess there are buses south west from Bologna to some villages and towns. Similarly the bit South East of Bologna roughly between Florence and Forli is beautiful and accessible by train but would require a change I think.

Bologna itself I don't know at all really. Just make sure to go to Ravenna. I think you're into your history so it's a must.

@Stadt

Bovril has well covered that Bologna is incredibly well connected on the train network. So take chance to utilise that.

If either of you are into your cars, Modena has the Ferrari museum. Also an excellent food market there. You can potentially stop at there or Parma on your way to Cremona

For the city itself its very much a walk aeound and take it in vibe. I’ll dig out my Google map to remind myself of the areas for food / drink. The basketball is a decent night out in Bologna - it’s got a huge history as Italy’s basketball city. The Two Towers are currently under renovation which is a shame but still impressive. If you don’t mind walking, go up to the Santa Maria Church. It’s a huge walk upwards but very good view - actually away from the city as you have the rolling hills.

I’m there Friday-Monday (lunchtime flight back) so trying to stay in Bologna besides going to Cremona but may stop off at Modena on @CosbehFox’s suggestion.

Maybe Ravenna is one for the Saturday morning.

We like walking so the Santa Maria trek is up our street.

For such a famous place Ravenna still feels like a sleepy market town, just one with some of the greatest art and architecture of the medieval era. Saturday morning in January you'll get a very authentic Romagna atmosphere, a long way from stereotypical Italy. Hopefully foggy and cold. Journey from Bologna feels like crossing the Fens (obviously don't sell it like this to your girlfriend). There's a covered market where you can get some very good coffee and I think the local football team has a stall. I saw them get promoted when I was there in 2007 and still have a very large soft spot for them.

I remember writing a post on here saying Apulia looked surprisingly like East Anglia and tagging you. I guess the mist rolling off the mountains adds to the atmosphere - I think you’d like Martin Dooljard’s YouTube channel if you haven’t seen it, he’s restored some old shepherd’s cottages in the mountains not far from Turin.

Had a cracker of a time in Dubrovnik and surrounding areas for a week, what a stunning place, my god you need to be fit though, steepest steps I’ve ever come across….everywhere!!

Was due to be home today but just spent best part of 5 hours sat at a hold point on the runway waiting to take off but the hurricane winds had other ideas so been sent packing into the Cavtat area for an extra night, also looks a lovely place

Not done a long haul for a fair while and our large suitacases have seen better days. Anyone got any mid-range hardshell suitcase companies they'd recommend? There's so many out there.

depends on your budget, but we bought some Samsonite ones recently for our Summer Holidays. Would thoroughly recommend.

Have a web search for Aerolite. Decent quality at reasonable prices.

I've been looking at destinations for an anniversary trip in March. We've wanted to do Dubrovnik but unsure on what it'll be like towards the end of March? Both in weather and things to do? Anyone have any experience of going this time of year?

Dubrovnik for a few nights Oct half term, never been but had a google of the best things to do, any tips welcome.

Make sure you hire a canoe and paddle out to the little island in front of you. You can moor up and dive in off the rocks.

Fantastic place, but pricey

Newcastle

Amazing architecture, great pubs, good restaurants, some decent galleries and museums, nice people. Short journey on the Metro out to Tynemouth which has a lovely beach. Half an hour's drive away you've got some of the best beaches in the country on the Norhumberland coast. Very underrated part of the world. Just avoid the Bigg Market on a weekend.

I like Newcastle but I think it’s a bit disappointing on the pub front. Crown Posada and The Free Trade are great but not many near that level

They're both great. Free Trade Inn is one of my favourites in the UK.

Some good spots in Ouseburn as well: Cumberland Arms, Ship Inn, Tanners Arms.

But yeah it's not up there with somewhere like Liverpool or York for city centre pubs.

I meant to get to the Cumberland but didn’t quite make it, looks proper.

The views from the pubs are some of the very best in the country though.

Went Liverpool last october.

Top city your right👍🏾

Liverpool is fantastic. Just go there for work quite a bit so it's not much of a holiday destination for me.
