Let's calm down and be rational about this. Not all Muslims are terrorists. People of other religions do bad things too. You probably won't be killed by a terrorist tomorrow or the next day. The might not have even been muslim. Some people are just nutcases, their religion is irrelevant. There's nothing you can do about this kind of thing. It's just a minority doing this. Their religion is completely irrelevant. Bringing up their religion serves no purpose. Let's be rational and stop talking about their religion. Let's just accept that these things happen. Let's do the sensible thing and move on. You never know these events might stop happening if we put all of our efforts into immediately forgetting it ever happened. Shush everybody. Talking about this only makes the terrorists want to strike again! Just forget about it, move on, it never happened.

Have we established or proved the attackers are actually Muslim?

So far, I have seen pictures and videos of two guys with Kalashnikovs, in full black combat gear, masked.

Apart from some Arab words uttered during the attack, the true identities have yet to be determined.

Is this a serious post?

If so I'd say it's beyond doubt they are Muslims yes, they've attacked a building they has been repeatedly threatened by Islamic extremists, they've executed the cartoonists who have threatened the prophet.

Whilst doing this they were shouting Allah Akbar which wis caught on camera and then numerous witnesses have said whilst gunning down the intended victims they called by name they shouted various things about this being revenge for insulting the prophet.

I mean it's obviously not as certain as Prince Phillip's guilt, but I think it's pretty nailed on.

If they can afford guns they've obviously got some money and connections. Not sure we'll ever know the truth about whether they're Muslims or not to be honest. A good lawyer will see them free.

Really!!! :nigel:

Not surprised to be fair!!

Yeah have a look on the Facebook story, the attitude seems to be insult us you reep what you sew. Then a few even worse who actually seem to revel in it.

Sydney was similar except everyone was just using Israel. You have to wonder if there is a huge correlation between the Palestine conflict and the fact the majority of British Muslims believe the Holocaust was made up and think US and Israel did 9/11.

If I a Jew in Europe I'd be a pretty worried man. Skip a couple of generations and people often forget the past.

Don't know if we have anyone good at translating French?

Apparently says who the suspects are.

http://www.metronews.fr/info/attentat-a-charlie-hebdo-les-trois-suspects-ont-ete-identifies/moag!6R1qjYdgLbxjQ/

Two brothers in their thirties, their accomplice an 18-year old.

The two brothers have French nationality (born in the 10th precinct of Paris) and bear Arab names, one of them is well-known to the police for encouraging others to join the Djihad (holy war) in Iraq (against the US, I presume).

He was convicted in 2005 and was supposed to serve three years in prison, but let go after eighteen months.

Muslim Arab names or Christian ones?

Utterly disgusting.

I'm proud of the French people for the way they took to the streets and city squares tonight to mourn and to show support for press freedom.

Not enough. Every newspaper and magazine in France should join together and print the cartoons on the front page.

Do you know something we don't, Matt? What's Phil the Greek been up to?

Up until the identities were confirmed, it was pretty much a guessing game.

The link provided by Metronews is from tonight, 8.30pm.

Anyone can gear up like those two freaks and learn two simple sentences in Arabic or French and shout them repeatedly. It's not difficult to learn, really.

Some people have some really funny preconceived ideas about terrorism.

Next time something like this happens fancy a bet on the guessing game? I'll offer decent odds in your favour.

Anyone fancy learning a few lines of Arabic and going on a shooting spree for a bit of a giggle?

Not everyone is on the telly 24/7. I got in late and to my knowledge and up to that point, the identities of the two shooters had yet to be confirmed.

Now I know better.

Fancy?

Why only France... Why not through Europe, with backing from the Muslim council.

True, but what's more likely - members of an extremist fringe of a religion, where even the moderates are pretty extreme (in a 2010 survey, 36% of 16-24 year old british muslims supported the death penalty for those who apostatise) flip out over people mocking them, or two lunatics learn arabic and french phrases to frame the muslims for this?

Probably better to read the news before commenting then. :)

Why on earth would the Muslim council back something they have openly said they want people arrested and jailed for?

Which council? The British Muslim Council?

They allegedly condemned the attack, alongside their French counterpart:

Well of course. The vast majority of Muslims will condemn the attack, but the vast majority of Muslims also believe what the magazine printed was so unacceptable it should be banned from printed and the creators of it prosecuted so they aren't going to back it being splashed across the front pages.

78% of British Muslim's believed the Danish cartoonists should be charged, a few less believe anyone should who insults Islam should be but still a majority.

That was in 2006 as well, believe me they haven't moderated in the last 8 years.

I'm not saying you're not onto something, but consider that a poll never reflects the whole population under consideration.

They are numbers in a numbers game.

They certainly didn't poll all Muslims in Great Britain and who says all results for the respective categories/questions are a genuine reflection of one's faith?

You also first say that

the vast majority of Muslims also believe what the magazine printed was so unacceptable it should be banned from printed and the creators of it prosecuted so they aren't going to back it being splashed across the front pages."

when you're in fact talking about British Muslims - that's not really what you were referring to in the first place, making it look a bit misguided. Should be more specific from the start.

The one mind-boggling or revealing part of that particular survey is that

While a small minority of Muslims sympathise with extremism and Islamist terror, the vast majority do not.

but

there was little support for freedom of speech if it would offend religious sensibilities.

What may look ridiculous to us - no one would be offended by a depiction of Jesus - is a different case with Mohammed. Judging by that poll and reading it my way, the vast majority of British Muslims asked in that poll condemn violence, terror and extremism and demand legal prosecution of those who portray the prophet.

I get the impression you're trying to offer a defence by pointing out that most 'only' want legal measures to be taken. Sure, it's better than wanting them slaughtered in the streets but it is still a morally corrupt view to hold.
