MC Prussian Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 All I will say is this... Southampton...fighting to finish in the top 4 and get their highest league finish ever....And they are playing as much youth as ever. Give them a chance now....Southampton play young lads at the top level who have never played professional football. Southampton's line-up against West Ham the other day: Forster - previously with Celtic Clyne - previously with Crystal Palace in the Championship Fonte - played at the top level in Portugal Gardos - played with Steaua in the Romanian top-flight Yoshida - played in the Dutch top-flight Reed - had played for Southampton in the Premier League last season Wanyama - see Forster Davis - formerly with Villa, Fulham and Rangers Mané - formerly with Red Bull Salzburg (sadly the best Austrian football team for years in a row) Pellè - Feyenoord Elia - on loan from Bremen, has played for Twente and Hamburg before Ward-Prowse - has featured for Southampton in two previous PL seasons Djuricic - on loan from Benfica I'll give you two players (Reed and Clyne) at most to support your theory. Which isn't that much, really.
NewquayFox Posted 21 February 2015 Author Posted 21 February 2015 Man Utd win the Premier league with 'Kids' back in the day after Hansen said they had no chance.....
Rhysm Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 All very well saying "chuck the youth in". With our impatient fans they will be getting booed after a few nervous touches and their confidence will be in shatters. Get them out on loan and ease them into first team.
CosbehFox Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 If you've seen Chillwell in some of the u21s games you can tell he's still a work in progress. That fact the club are happy for him to be a regular for the 18s and the 21s suggest they rate him highly.
Callabinho Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 I wouldn't start him this season, it will destroy him.
Webbo Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Southampton and Man U don't just play random kids out of their academies.they have to be good enough in the first place.
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Saw him at Southampton a few weeks back, good technically, but would get absolutely battered in the first team. Simply hasn't developed physically enough yet. Give him a couple of years and we might see him on the bench.
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Been said before - Nigel doesn't trust youth. I despair I really do.
Dan Posted 21 February 2015 Posted 21 February 2015 Gradel? Probably the only one but I didn't argue with him being sold at the time. He did nothing for us bar that MK Dons goal. Massive disappointment. All I will say is this... Southampton...fighting to finish in the top 4 and get their highest league finish ever....And they are playing as much youth as ever. Don't you think if we had the likes of Lallana, Ward-Prowse, Chambers, Shaw etc... coming through we'd play them as well?
Foxhateram Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 The way the crowd jeered when poor Lawrence made a few mistakes a few weeks back I wouldn't want to see an under 18 lad take the stage. The stage at the moment is almost like sheep herding on the pitch while tigers wait to pounce. Poor lad wouldn't last five minutes before having a mental break down. I'm surprised other players of more experience haven't reacted to be honest.

Ok - so the answer is that in the past five years, the only youth player who has been good enough to get a chance is Liam Moore Given the size of our club, thats pretty dreadful. Of course, I expect Nigel has it all sorted and we have changed our youth policy re the academy and we will reap the benefits over the next few years.

Of course, I expect Nigel has it all sorted and we have changed our youth policy re the academy and we will reap the benefits over the next few years. That may be - but hardly the fault of the manager, as he isn't responsible for the youth setup. And youth development does take its time - like I've mentioned in another thread, first you've got to detect the talent, then also be able to keep it in Leics. That's often the hardest part. The "big" clubs are sniffing around everywhere and are all too keen to lure youngsters to Manchester, Liverpool or London. What else do you need as an argument to beat Pearson with?
st albans fox Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 I'm not beating Nigel with this particular stick. Not being local, I just assume we have some talent bubbling under and read threads on here and other forums about decent prospects. Yet, when we have an opportunity to play any, we don't. So my original comment is wrong - it's not that he doesn't trust youth, it's merely that he has never had any to trust in the first place. Depressing.
Soar Fox Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 When's James Pearson going to be given a chance? 3 years in the development squad surely he's developed a lot by now.

We'll pretend Schlupp doesn't exist.
Tielemans63 Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 Comparing any team in the premier league with Southampton is a pretty pointless exercise as what they have done is exceptional. If you look at the teams around us, QPR, Burnley, Sunderland, West Brom, Hull they probably have even fewer homegrown talents playing first team football than we do. The only exception I can think of is Villa and arguably they've relied too much on youth and not invested in experience when you look at their recent decline. I'm not saying don't give youth a chance, I'm saying that this is the best league in the world so expecting a teenager to make the step up from youth team to premier league is a massive ask. All credit to Southampton for having done it but I do think they're the exception.
st albans fox Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 Thank god for babs - yes jeff is indeed the answer. I actually think he's decent though I know others don't recognise this.
Bettsj2 Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 Chilwell is shit. He wont get anywhere near the first team.

What we've got through at the moment (King, Schlupp and Moore) is an improvement on past years. If we'd loaned Gradel to a smaller team rather than Leeds he might not have been here now, but he'd have played more of a part than he did. Pearson was clear he didn't want him to go. That's not an awful return really. The club have put a lot of effort into becoming Cat 1 recently, so over the next 5 years I'm sure they'll want to start seeing a real return in terms of young players progressing.

That's a good point. The improvement of the academy was always going to be a long term project. If it's a 10 year plan then they're only half way through. I'm sure Southampton's success is the result of many, many years work. All credit to the Thais for making the investment. The academy has produced some decent footballers over the years but how many top level players have we produced in the last 15 years? I can only think of Emile Heskey. Have I missed anyone?

Bayfox Posted 23 February 2015 Posted 23 February 2015 not our fault stearman and mattock ****ed their careers away. seen a tweet last night saying jeff schlupp had confirmed both Chilwell and the the man destined for real or barca have trained with the 1st team several times this season.

Hamza has multiple times that's for sure. I think we will see Chilwell, Hamza, Ndukwu involved in pre season with the first team and it will be on them to take their chance like King did before the League 1 season.
