davieG Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 November WC. being proposed. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31600194 2022 World Cup: Tournament set for November and December The 2022 World Cup in Qatar should take place in November and December, a Fifa taskforce has recommended. Key football officials met in Doha to discuss a number of options following fears a summer event would endanger the health of players and fans. Qatari temperatures in June and July can exceed 40 degrees centigrade. Taskforce chief Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa also recommended that the 2022 tournament should be shortened by a few days. But there are no plans to reduce the size of the tournament from 32 teams or 64 matches. The recommendation is expected to be ratified by the executive committee of world football's governing body next month. The news will upset some of Europe's top leagues, who preferred an April-May option to minimise disruption to their own domestic programmes. The other date under consideration was January-February, but that raised the prospect of a clash with the Winter Olympics. BBC Radio 5 live's sports news reporter Richard Conway said it looked like Europe's leading leagues had "lost this argument" but indicated the row over dates would rumble on. "It's not not the end of the story by a long way, but organisers in Qatar will be hopeful that this is the start perhaps of building and planning for the 2022 World Cup for real," he added.
walkerleeds Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Would the FA ever have the bottle to boycott this farce?
ramboacdc Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Blatter: World Cup in Qatar Everyone:Too hot Blatter: In Winter Everyone: How will it work? Blatter: **** knows, I'll be retired by then
kingcarr21 Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Absolute joke. If the world cup being moved to the winter would allow Qatar to host it then they shouldnt have been considered in the first place. Clearly some back hand bribes were involved. The European leagues are going to be hit hard. May even see some strange title winning teams in the 2022-2023 season Blatter: World Cup in Qatar Everyone:Too hot Blatter: In Winter Everyone: How will it work? Blatter: **** knows, I'll be retired by then Blatter will never retire. Unless someone else is voted in (unlikely) he will be President until he's 6 feet under. Even then he will probably still be President and people talking to him through a Ouija board. The sooner Blatter f**** off the better
Dan Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Would the FA ever have the bottle to boycott this farce? Our FA don't have the bottle to ban a player for kicking another in the head. They're hopeless. They'll be there. it's an absolute joke that it's still due to go ahead in Qatar.
Guest MattP Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Can't move the African nations guys, too hot. World Cup - errr? Give it to Qatar.
Crinklyfox Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 This will cause serious grief to any PL team with internationals (which is almost all of them). Points, cups, titles will all be imperilled. So I expect that some clubs may not want their players to take part, after all there's nothing in it for them. I wouldn't be surprised to see new contracts containing loyalty clauses for the period of the world cup. If this happens it will lead to a diminished tournament, which should be the showcase of football to the world. I had little respect for FIFA before this, what was left has gone. IMO we need a new governing body free from the probable corruption and toadyism associated with the current regime.

FIFA won't be having domestic leagues going on to distract from their show-piece.

They'll be there. it's an absolute joke that it's still due to go ahead in Qatar. Absolutely crazy. Surely this affects most of the major leagues in Europe too though? I can't believe they wouldn't all come together and pull out together. Let's face it, with no England, Spain, France, Germany or Italy et al present there would be no world cup.
davieG Posted 24 February 2015 Author Posted 24 February 2015 UEFA were members of the FIFA task force that recommended this. For those slating the FA there's little they can do on there own, boycotting would only work if it was backed by UEFA I doubt anyone worldwide would be that bother if England boycotted it on their own. Even the main leagues in Europe only function through approval from FIFA via UEFA and the FA.
Leicesterpool Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Wonder if they'll be much of a boycott, I wish a rival of fifa would propose another tournament in that summer of that year.
davieG Posted 24 February 2015 Author Posted 24 February 2015 Wonder if they'll be much of a boycott, I wish a rival of fifa would propose another tournament in that summer of that year. If a 'rival' did turn up it would probably end up in court because FIFA are the sole world wide 'controllers' of football/soccer. I guess if someone like Sky lost their TV rights they'd be the most likely somewhat like the Kerry Packer cricket scenario. Founder of World Series Cricket[edit]Main article: World Series Cricket Outside Australia, Packer was best known for founding World Series Cricket. In 1977 the Nine Network cricket rights deal led to a confrontation with the cricket authorities, as top players from several countries rushed to join him at the expense of their international sides. One of the leaders of the "rebellion" was England captain Tony Greig. Greig remained a commentator on the Nine Network's payroll until his death in December 2012. Packer's aim was to secure broadcasting rights for Australian cricket, and he was largely successful. In the 1970s the global cricket establishment fiercely opposed Packer in the courts. To counter the establishment, Packer hired the ten best Senior Counsels in the UK and put them on retainers, stipulating that they were not to take on any additional work during the court case (the sole purpose of which was to deny the establishment the best legal minds to prosecute their case) .[citation needed] When he died he was mourned with a minute's silence at the MCG as one of the most influential figures in the history of the sport. Packer was famously quoted from a 1976 meeting with the Australian Cricket Board, with whom he met to negotiate the rights to televise cricket. According to witnesses, he said: "There is a little bit of the whore in all of us, gentlemen. What is your price?"[7]
ramboacdc Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 UEFA have climbed down and backed this as well. no one will boycott. only England/UK plays through December. if it means stopping all football league football, it will, of course, be England that suffers again. the football league has to pretty much play Tuesday/Saturday from February on wards already. 2022/2023 season they will be doing it all the way from the start.

I can't see League One and Two clubs voting to stop playing for two months due to lost income, so the Championship might get dragged kicking and screaming into playing with players away on international duty. The Premier League will naturally pause so this farce can go ahead.

Mike the Metal Ed Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Will the premier league still be stopped even if England don't qualify? That would depend on if FIFA have any rules on competing football competitions I suppose. Edit: Although, I'm sure they'd consider stopping due to the amount of affected clubs and international audiences, etc. such is the business model of the PL.
ramboacdc Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Will the premier league still be stopped even if England don't qualify? if it didnt it would be like what happened to the tigers that year the rugby world cup was during the season!
Dan Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Surely if this goes ahead then our season will probably be more like late July - early June with a months break?
purpleronnie Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 FIFA taskforce I wonder how many free dinners went on that.
StanSP Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Ridiculous. Shouldn't have been given to Qatar in the first place. Might sound harsh but seeing as the twat will never retire, in some ways I can't wait til Blatter pops his clogs.
David Hankey Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 This decision should it come about is absolute madness. FIFA in general and Blatter in particular have been blinded by the promised riches of taking the World Cup to Qatar. For a start Qatar is not a footballing nation. Ever since I can remember the Finals have always been held in July after the majority of competing countries' regular seasons have finished. I appreciate July in Qatar from a footballing point of view is probably a non-starter and this alone makes the decision to take this tournament there so daft. The world of football is going to be turned upside down because of this latest decision and the fact that FIFA should never chosen that destination. It seems to me that they have copied Ecclestone who seems to take F1 to any country which has the biggest brown envelope!! Would cricket take their World Cup to Alaska?
lgfualol Posted 24 February 2015 Posted 24 February 2015 Wasn't Blatter one that voted against Qatar? Not that that makes much of a difference. Whole thing is ****ed up. It shouldn't take the season being moved for people to boycott, it should be the 1200(?) thousand that have died building the stadiums in that backwards country.
CosbehFox Posted 25 February 2015 Posted 25 February 2015 I suspect the ECA are already considering how much money they can claim off FIFA. Similarly I suspect the other 2022 bidders have lawyers pouring over the rules for bidding. E.g. Other countries bid in knowledge that it was a summer tournament, not a winter. Australia had a particular problem with getting other sports to back down over June/July as FIFA ask no other top level sport takes place in the host country at the time of the World Cup.
