Optimism - easiest run-in

Recommended Posts

That's potentially a bad thing, we seem to raise our game against the better teams, albeit still lose, but when we play the poorer teams we seem to 'lower' our game to match them and lose. Either way, we lose - That's not optimistic, it's not pessimistic, it's based on what we've seen all season, it's reality.

7 games at home.

A game in hand over everyone else

We play most of our relegation rivals

Anyone who thinks it's over already is deluded. Somehow it is still possible given our dreadful results BUT if we lose most of these games it will be like losing 6 points on our rivals. We cannot give anyone else an edge.

If we beat Hull, Tottenham and West ham we will deffo stay up as this will see us rise out of bottom 3 with a decent last 8 games. If we get at least 5 points we have a chance. If we are still bottom after those 3 games I'll admit it's game over.

If we beat Hull tomorrow then, they will be dragged into it as they have a lot of tough games left, the same goes for Aston Villa and Sunderland.

It's not quite over yet, imo Burnley and QPR will be relegated and its in our hands if we want to stay up, our run in isn't as easy as some make out but there are winnable games in there compared to the others mentioned.

On paper we have the best run in or others could argue the worst. At this stage of the season, it may be difficult to play QPR and Burnley who have something to play for rather than a Swansea or Stoke who don't really have anything to play for. The games against our relegation rivals are paramount to our survival chances. Win 4/5 games and a few draws, we will be there or thereabouts. But we have to win football games, which we haven't been able to do enough this season.

Haven't seen much of anything to show we can beat any team. We play each match just well enough to lose by narrow margins.

Now if things change with our mentality and we play the final games above the level of the so called easier competition then we might have a chance.

Optimism fading but not gone

I admire the optimism.  But the simple fact is, no team has 18 points mid March...and stays up.  We need to go on a Europa league form of results in the last 11 games to get out of this.  As if we are going to win 6 out of 11 to stay up when we've only won 4 out of the previous 27!  Doesn't matter if our run in is favourable or not if we are the worst team in the league.  It still means that every team above us is better.

Obviously the odds are stacked against us. Results do not give any positive indicator of a way to get out of this. BUT one encouraging thing for me is that we have lost so many games this season and yet somehow we are still in with a chance. Forget past performances, the season starts here. We are capable of winning 6 of the games on paper at least. Obviously it doesn't work that way, but I still believe our form has to turn at some point. We have created so many chances, and at some point we will start scoring. Hopefully that day will come sooner rather than later.

I like to think positive and this may be somewhat hypocritical of me (certainly not deluded though) - but based on how we've played against virtually all the teams in and around us then it is a bad thing, not a good thing to be playing six teams also fighting for their lives!

I agree we seem to struggle against these teams, and they have something to play for too which may give them an extra incentive to perform well against us. However, it means that our fate is in our own hands. If and I know it is a big IF, we can win say 5/6 of these games we should be there or thereabouts and drop other teams into the relegation battle. Obviously it is going to take something special for this to happen, and past performances may not yield any positivity or hope for the ones coming up. BUT let's envisage the next 11 games as knockout games. We have to win to stay in the competition. Usually players perform that extra bit when times get desperate. Let's hope we get that extra 5% that may see us over the line

Agreed - but if only all of the other teams in the equation weren't saying the exact same thing about their survival work in hand as what you've just posted :) Like you say though we can only do all in our powers to try and succeed in an almost impossible quest to stay up in the Prem. for the first time since 2001! Has any team managed to stay up with just18 points as well as being 5 points adrift as late on in the season as on March 14th though??

Exactly this.

I hope the players don't read all the negative crap on this Forum. It's embarrassing that 80% on here have given up already. Get behind your team FFS.

West Brom had 18 points with 11 games to go 10 years ago when they did the great escape and Pearson was the assistant manager then.

It's not impossible but a very big task.

I'd like to think we will stay up but I don't think we will.
