Drinkwater

Player of the Year to not being able to get a kick.

Real shame things haven't happened for him this season, personally think he's a better option than James in there.

What happened? :-(

Doesn't get nearly as much time on the ball or possession as he did. James looks better in the Prem because he gets the ball and usually releases it quickly, whereas Drinky needs time to pick out the right pass.

The same thing that's happened to most of our players. There are very few who have performed to the  level they're capable of. Some of it is their fault and some of it isn't.

It's weird because Pearson has chopped and changed to our detriment for most of the season, now he seems to have settled with a back 5 and midfield that still aren't getting results.

Drinky has not been good enough overall when he's played but he now hasn't had a look in for weeks whilst Cambiasso, who has at times been exceptionally poor, seems undroppable at this time.

Unfortunately, Drinky is a confidence player and someone who is great when he's on a roll, but when he's in a rut he seems to struggle to get out of it. Maybe Pearson acknowledges that.

I think Sharpe may well have a point with his comparison to James, Drinkwater was expected to be creative. And there's no doubt that is more difficult in the Prem, but far more difficult when you play as negative a system as we do most games. But James has adapted better, no doubt.

You could easily ask the question about Vardy, Morgan, De Laet, Nugent, Knockaert etc. I sympathise with them because Pearson has not helped them at all this season, his management has obscenely bad, but for whatever reason they haven't made the step up to the standard we require (though even that would be an extremely harsh judgement of Knockaert, who's started 2 games, and has been very good in one of those).

The same goes for the players we've signed, really. How much better would all these players and the team as a whole be with proper management? We might never know.

In any case, Drinky will have to do more if he's to make it at this level, as I do believe he is capable of doing.

Not good enough, even for our poor side.

This quote could be from the first half of the Middlesbrough away match thread, first game of last season.

Drinkwater showed last season he has the ability. You don't win Player of the Year for a team that wins the Championship with 102 points if you're not good enough for the Premier League. Lots of different factors in his failure to impress this season, some of them down to him and most of them not. But I still think he can become a Premier League player in the right circumstances.

It hasn't gone in his favour at all this season. I'd like to see Drinkwater, James and Cambiasso as a three. Drinkwater didn't become a bad player overnight. Could well make it at this level one day I reckon.

The biggest disappointment of the season, for me, has been the non-development of one of our brightest young midfield players for years. Pearson's insistence on playing a midfield two has been to the detriment of Drinkwater who has usually been overlooked in favour of Cambiasso and James.

A year ago, I watched this kid week-in, week-out and thought I was seeing a player who would be knocking on the door for an international cap. I fear that playing for Pearson THIS season has done the lad no favours at all. Either that, or he's just not very good? But I don't believe this. I think Drinky was ripe for improving and developing. Unfortunately for him (and for us IMO) this just ain't happened.

Disappointing.

I bet he's a bit sick too. Second in player of the season in the Championship and he's going to be heading back there after a quiet year at an age where you'd expect him to be really coming on as a player.

He was the best player in the Championship for me last season and there was a fair bit of competition; he made us tick in central midfield, he was the heartbeat of the side. Sadly, he's never got going this year - you wouldn't leave him out for James or Cambiasso, even Hammond at times - he's gone back into his shell when he's played. He's not that old so still plenty of time to develop. I know it's the mentality of the average football fan to write people off quickly but I hope he comes again and leads the charge when we're back in the Championship.

Not Premier League quality.

So that's another opinion of mine from years ago, which has turned out to be right :)

Even though you were slagging him off post last season before he won our player of the year. Shit attempt.

Short memories on here, but its what to expect I suppose.. the young lad wanted to sign for us for the rest of his career not so long ago.., as far as I recall he has never let us down .. but its not worked out this season for reason's we don't know..., now the fox talk mob want to kick him while he;s down ... excuse me for not joining in...I for one still rate the lad..

No way is he better than James, if James can start to find the net he'll end up a good player he always get himself in to good positions.

James lacks pace real bad. He can never get on the end of a through ball, and if he gets played through I never have confidence because I know the opposition will catch up to him. I think he's a good footballer but he needs the right players around him. Drinkwater is the only midfielder we have that gives me confidence when driving forward with the ball but when his confidence is shot he looks really bad.

I really though Drinkwater could go on and be knocking on England's door this season - just yesterday Ryan Mason got a call-up, that really could have been Drinkwater.

I can't question his effort in establishing himself as a starting CM - you just have to play Cambiasso in there for me - and on paper it's a fight between James and Drinkwater if we're playing a 2-man partnership. Right now? (like I have all season) that position is James' long-term. Think James needs to iron out some consistent errors and take his chances a little better, future captain imo.

I'm certain Cambiasso won't sign on for another year if we get relegated, and that opens up the opportunity to partner James with Drinkwater again - hopefully they can keep their form and understanding of each other's play from last season, and i'd like to see DD / James be given a few starts together towards the end of this season too.

Which is exactly why the James/Cambiasso combo has just not worked. No pace. Both too slow to track back sufficiently against an onslaught of oncoming midfielders.

The solution? Play one of them deeper, with two others in front.

Just about the only combination Pearson hasn't played this season has been the DM, sat just in front of the back four as a shield. Which is the first formation I'd have tried. Whether that was James, Cambi or Hammond wouldn't have mattered... They are much of a muchness. But Pearson STILL continues with his James/Cambiasso box to box. And again, we were pelted on Saturday against Spurs. In my opinion, our midfield was easily the weakest area of the pitch against Tottenham.

Although Kasper flapping and Upson being incredibly slow played its part too.

Can only gauge a player by how they have stepped up this season and Drinky, like a few players have done badly.

What else can we say???

Either he's not good enough at this level, the management don't fancy him or the management haven't done their best in nurturing their young talented players.

I personally opt for the 3rd option!!!!!
