Dickov22 Posted 24 March 2015 Posted 24 March 2015 Lovely footballer. Made us tick last season. Can't help but think he's not been given enough opportunities this season, particularly in his natural position. In the games where he's been poor, he's been in a diamond style formation. He's the kind of player who needs to be central so everything can go through him. He'll be back
Fox92 Posted 24 March 2015 Posted 24 March 2015 Which is exactly why the James/Cambiasso combo has just not worked. No pace. Both too slow to track back sufficiently against an onslaught of oncoming midfielders. The solution? Play one of them deeper, with two others in front. Just about the only combination Pearson hasn't played this season has been the DM, sat just in front of the back four as a shield. Which is the first formation I'd have tried. Whether that was James, Cambi or Hammond wouldn't have mattered... They are much of a muchness. But Pearson STILL continues with his James/Cambiasso box to box. And again, we were pelted on Saturday against Spurs. In my opinion, our midfield was easily the weakest area of the pitch against Tottenham. Although Kasper flapping and Upson being incredibly slow played its part too. Well if he wants to persist with a 5 its got to be 352 for me, with wingbacks, so James and Cambiasso play with Drinkwater. Or Cambiasso (or Hammond) deeper with the two in front, I agree. We still miss that box to box midfielder though, Izzet was a proper definition of this and we haven't had a player like it since. I feel as if our midfield is often our weakest area, they seem to get bypassed a lot by a lot of teams.

Vicki Vixen Posted 24 March 2015 Posted 24 March 2015 I expect he will end up on loan at Millwall. A real shame he has not progressed, and even sitting on the bench, it seems he's rarely in Pearson's thoughts when we're making substitutions. I don't think he's come of the bench for weeks.

I've been a firm believer in the 4 - 5 - 1 Would probably have Cambiasso behind Drinkwater and James, allowing Cambiasso more time to clean up, and space on the ball with his vision should produce some impeccable attacking plays. Our midfield has been our weakest area most games i'd say. Defending has been poor, but the midfield fragility has affected our level of defending.
shade Posted 24 March 2015 Posted 24 March 2015 The biggest disappointment of the season, for me, has been the non-development of one of our brightest young midfield players for years. Pearson's insistence on playing a midfield two has been to the detriment of Drinkwater who has usually been overlooked in favour of Cambiasso and James. A year ago, I watched this kid week-in, week-out and thought I was seeing a player who would be knocking on the door for an international cap. I fear that playing for Pearson THIS season has done the lad no favours at all. Either that, or he's just not very good? But I don't believe this. I think Drinky was ripe for improving and developing. Unfortunately for him (and for us IMO) this just ain't happened. Disappointing. were you saying the same thing two seasons ago, or were you one of the ones saying he only ever passes sideways, he's crap?
nettle Posted 24 March 2015 Posted 24 March 2015 Good player in the right setting, last year he made us tick in an attack minded side. With Pearson reverting to type I.e negative football like he did in his first stint here it has been to the detriment of Drinkwater. Hopefully he will come good again if we play attack minded football.
STUHILL Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 Massive disappointment! If anyone was going to make the step-up to the Prem, I thought it would be him. James has looked much better and it's hard not to pick Cambiasso, but even Hammond you could say has been better than Drinkwater. Hope he stays as I think he could get back to being great again, but you do wonder if Nige has lost faith in him and he will be replaced in the Summer
kingfox Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 Even though you were slagging him off post last season before he won our player of the year. Shit attempt. But I've always had my doubts about him making the step up, regardless of what he did last season. The quality of the Prem is too much to handle, doesn't get time on the ball, it's much more physical and of course the quality is better. Said he wouldn't make the step up - For the time being I'm right. Said Knockaert would turn out rubbish - Looks like he is off, therefore yet again I was right. Said Mahrez was overrated, got laughed at - Now fans are moaning about him. Said Vardy would eventually come good - Yet again I got that right. Was one of a few who stuck by Schlupp when loads wrote him off. Said De Laet was shit defensively - Haven't been 100% right on that, but he's had his moments. I may talk shit but at the end of the day, quite a few of my shit opinions have turned out to be right.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 Well done Kingfox. Aren't you insightful. Give yourself a massive pat on the back for being right. Vardy has certainly come good. First goal in 24 games against Spurs, what a fantastic piece of insight that was, really, incredible stuff. I'm impressed. Aand he's on ignore.
kingfox Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 Well done Kingfox. Aren't you insightful. Give yourself a massive pat on the back for being right. Well after all the shit I get, I have a right to basically stick two fingers up at everyone who has laughed at one of my opinions. Only thing I got wrong was my opinion on Matty James.
Crazy Kop Corner Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 I still think Danny is real quality and will come good for us. He needs games and to get his confidence back. Still hoping for a Drinkwater/James partnership for the next few seasons.
Strokes Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 I think he might lack the character and personality required to suceed, he clearly has ability but something is stopping this coming through.
Guest Col city fan Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 I think he might lack the character and personality required to suceed, he clearly has ability but something is stopping this coming through. Yes....Nigel Pearson and Esteban Cambiasso at the present time.
Strokes Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 Yes....Nigel Pearson and Esteban Cambiasso at the present time.OK col, I forgot the rules.
Corky Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 Yes....Nigel Pearson and Esteban Cambiasso at the present time. Why Cambiasso? Why not James instead?
kingcarr21 Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 Last season we dictated games by controlling the midfield and playing our own way and making the opposition set up to stop us. This season we started off in similar fashion and picked up some good results against tough teams. For me our season and Drinkwaters ended when we stopped playing our own way and started setting up to try and stop the opposition by setting up with the 4-4-2 diamond. Drinkwater wasnt used to playing on the side of the diamond and ultimately played poor. This was the beginning of our dismal run and Drinky was one of the casualties. I have to agree with Col that Drinkwater has been the biggest disappointment of the season. For me not his fault at all. Him being played out of position hasnt done him any favours. He thrived last season in being the main man in midfield so his bit part appearances this season have ultimately not resulted in him playing well. This would be my biggest gripe of the season that we havent continued having Drinky and James on the pitch together. If we were to survive this season and Cambiasso hangs up his boots then we will be in a bad situation next season in CM with Drinky and James not having played together in a long time. Weve all been saying for a while to bin off the 5 at the back. For me i would love to see either a 4-1-4-1 (which i have put down as my formation for weeks now) or 4-2-3-1 Keeper De Laet Huth Was Konch Cambiasso Mahrez Drinkwater James Schluup Kramaric or Keeper De Laet Huth Was Konch Cambiasso James Mahrez Drinkwater Schluup Kramaric It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer cause if we are in the championship (very likely) will Drinky want to play for us knowing if he puts in a player of the year performance again this doesnt even get him into the squad in the prem.
Danno Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 Think he would be good in a team better than ours who can afford to be patient with players. Right now we need players who will perform right now and we don't have the luxury that a team like West Ham etc have.

Yep... proper negative in both Spurs games, QPR away, Man U home, Arsenal Home and away, Chelsea away, Liverpool away, Palace Home. At times we have set up too negative, other times we've just not been allowed to play a game that suits our strengths. We'd struggle last season against teams happy to sit back just as we have this season. Where as when teams want to attack it gives us the space to play our natural game, that's why we've shown up better against most of your big teams who are happy to attack and leave space.

shade Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 What, may I ask was your opinion on James - where you got it wrong? that he was a careless lover.
kingfox Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 What, may I ask was your opinion on James - where you got it wrong? I threw a paddy because we kept signing players from United, so I didn't want him.
kingfox Posted 25 March 2015 Posted 25 March 2015 What about your opinion on St Ledger Kingfox? He had good games & bad games. His little spell between Blackpool to Bristol City games two seasons back was majestic, him & Wes back then were colossal.
