In the (unlikely) event of...

This is completely hypothetical. Some will think this is completely pointless even thinking about. It most probably is, and relies on a LOT of "ifs". However!...

If this is the situation before kick off on the final day of the season:

16th: [A RELEGATION BATTLER] minus 26 GD - 33 points

17th: [A RELEGATION BATTLER] minus 29 GD - 33 points

18th: QPR minus 25 GD - 32 points

19th: LCFC minus 22 GD - 32 points

20th: [A RELEGATION BATTLER] minus 34 GD - 28 points

Ideally in that situation, 16th and 17th would be Hull and Sunderland (Hull at home to Man Utd, Sunderland away to Chelsea).

Say the game kicks off, and come half time we're drawing with QPR. Both managers take a look at the results around us, and 16th and 17th are both losing by a couple of goals. In this position, it means that both us and QPR will survive, based upon goal difference.

Do you just pass the ball around, making it completely obvious that we're happy to take the draw? Would QPR wanna do that?

Obviously no discussions will have been had with the opposition team, however I'm not sure how things would look in regards to match fixing if both teams quite happily played for the single point?

Of course there's always the chance of the teams in 16th/17th doing something miraculous and coming back - that'd foil the plan entirely, but going for that final goal could mean that we take unnecessary risks that send us back to the Championship!

I dread to see this actually happen, and of course it's unlikely - however given that we're on level points, and trailing 16th/17th by a single point, it appears likely that we could both be on better GD, especially if the teams in 16th/17th are losing.

Completely pointless exercise, if you don't wish to have any involvement, feel free to move on to the next thread. I'm not posting this with the intention of throwing around any negativity. It's entirely a "what would you do" situation.

TL;DR: Final day of the season, both us and QPR in 18th/19th position. Gets to half time and we're drawing with QPR. Teams in 16th/17th are losing by a couple of goals, and both ourselves and QPR can stay up if we hold the draw. What do you do, and why?

Some brief thoughts:

Go for the win - finish the season in style

Go for the win - too risky to try and draw, considering the teams in 16th/17th could pull back

Go for the win - let's bury QPR back to the gloom and doom of the Championship

Go for the draw - if the teams above are losing, it's not worth the risk of conceding a goal

Depends - If 16th/17th are both losing by a fair few goals (fairly likely if it's Sunderland and Hull in 16th/17th), then happily take the draw. If not, go for the draw.

I'm guessing most people here would want the 3 points, bury QPR and not have the risk of the other teams drawing, but it'd be interesting to see some thoughts.

Please no hate, I just like seeing peoples thoughts on these "what if" scenarios!

Hold the draw at least until one of the teams is a goal away again from putting us down, sure both teams would realise that situation.

Not going to happen though lol

If that's the scenario with 45 minutes of the season remaining - I'll be found slumped In the upper reaches of SK1, foaming at the mouth.

That's what I think may happen when mixing pre match alcohol with self injected Valium.

Thoughts on that?

I think we could well see a stalemate if both teams are to survive going into added on time with other results finished.

Similar thing happened with a Huddersfield game recently.

Although we'll be 8-0 up by that time so who cares?

Absolutely go for the win and try to send those nobodies back where they belong.

Knowing our luck Sunderland/Hull would both turn it around as well. Plus a draw would send us down below QPR if only one of them went on to get a point on head to head.

Go for the win, obviously. I'd actually be quite embarrassed to stay in the league with the intention of playing for the draw along with the other team. Pretty sure Coventry already did that to Sunderland one year. An absolute outrage!

I think our squad and Pearson has too much integrity to just play a game out like that anyway.

Depends what 20th are doing.

Meh, some may see it as embarrassing. For me, I wouldn't care about 45 minutes of playing safe in order to stay up. I'm not that much of an advocate of playing fair when it matters this much. Of course, for the teams ending up going down, they'd have every reason to be annoyed, but I don't support them, so send them down! :P

I think you only invite trouble if you play for a draw with so much football left to play. Could only start considering that if all things were the same with 20 left to play, maybe later.

What are the 20th place doing?

QPR wouldn't want to play for a draw if they were a contender.

Depends what 20th are doing.

Ah, sorry - my bad when writing the post. 20th is dead and buried (I'll edit now).

Fair point. Could try and grab a goal, and if with 20 minutes to go we're likely to stay up with the draw, park the bus (cringe).

Do you think QPR would happily do the same? Would they want to send us down? I imagine after fighting so hard through the playoffs, they'd be even more reluctant to risk anything than us?

Go for the draw right to the end then catch em out in the final seconds by getting knockaert to dive and win a penalty. Dastardly or what....

That'd be hilarious :') - just make sure that he's the only main in their half when he takes it this time!

I remember something similar, was it Barnsley v ?? Last game and a draw would make both teams safe, and there goalie had it and not one player went to tackle him??? God knows something like that lol

I'd happily take my chances with a draw if Hull had to draw being 0-2 down at home to Man Utd and Chelsea were beating Sunderland 2-0.

However it doesn't do the integrity of the game any good if both sides didn't venture into each others half for 45mins.

It would be okay if it was like the Euro game when a 2-2 draw put Italy out. Denmark and Sweden played a proper game only for Sweden to equalise in the 89th min. They then didn't venture into each other's half which is fair enough.

Sounds very similar to a match played at the Spanish World Cup in 1982.  Known as the 'Disgrace of Gijon'.

Austria & West Germany deliberately played for a result favourable to them both, putting them both through to the next round at the expense of Algeria.

I wouldn't want to be associated with anything like that.  I don't think Mahrez would either, even if it is only him watching from the bench.

Would love the 3 points but the mindset of both managers and players would probably have the teams playing conservatively. Would likely end up with a lot of midfield/defensive passing and a few long balls up to one player on his own.......not much more.
