Must just note that, before posting this thread, I had no idea that Hodgson was at the KP at the weekend.

Still, glad to see it's kicked up a healthy discussion. He had his usual energy on Saturday, though his 1-on-1 may not have helped his cause. That being said, I still feel his main job, in our side at least, is to provide assists, and it's well-documented that he leads the way for us in that respect this season - 8 in total, and 7 of those have come since Tottenham, plus his 3 goals. And, of course, he set up Riyad's second in pretty fine fashion, drawing defenders and leaving his partner unmarked.

He has the most assists of any English forward in the top flight now. Only Henderson (9), Brunt (9), Baines (9) and Downing (8) have as many or more, and Brunt is the only one of those that plays any sort of real advanced role, while the others tend to get most of their assists from set pieces rather than open play.

That sort of play must have turned Roy's head more than anything, I reckon. I still acknowledge that it's an outside chance that he'll get so much of a sniff of international football, but with the qualifiers pretty much wrapped up in England's favour and friendlies on the horizon, stranger things have happened than for him to get a cap or two.

He's competing against Austin, Crouch, Abonglahor, Barnes, Wickham, Nugent, Gayle. Long term he might not be good enough, but we need strikers for those games.

There are probably only 5 strikers available for Roy to pick from for these two games, he has a good chance as any based on the last 10 games

Has he actually got 8 assists excluding penalty wins? Considering how many of them we know he can win that is actually bloody impressive! Winning a pen may not  count as an official assist but it directly sets up a goal so if you're not a mug you don't write it off.

Fair point though - just double checked, there would be at least 2 at Man Utd (Cambiasso and Ulloa's first). The stat of 6 assists and 3 goals since Tottingham was bandied around on MOTD last week, so in reality Jamie has 9 - guessing it hasn't been updated.

According to Fantasy premier league, so including penalties he won that were converted, Vardy is second in assists this season. Overall. Second. Behind only Fabregas.

Transfermarkt has him down with four goals and ten (!) assists, but when you check the actual league stats from this season, it's down to eight assists.

 

Still, wonderful achievement from Vardy.

Tbh if set piece goals count as an assist then so should vardy winning penalties.

I'd also like to add the main point people seem to be missing about vardy' chances for england is the current formation played by both us and england. We play with our strikers in the channels so that it spreads the Cbs outwards leaving mahrez with more space in the middle. This is the same for the last many england games where the diamond has been deployed with rooney Welbeck playing upfront, but go wide; with sterling at the tip of the diamond.

Vardy would fit in this formation which is something surely hodgson wants from his players if he is to keep pursuing it. Just a thought if hodgson was truly looking at vardy

Yeah so 2 assists and 2 penalties won (assists). If a penalty is scored then I don't know how the player who won it can't claim an assist? It's effectively playing someone in to take a free shot 12 yards out. By definition surely an assist..?

Anyway regardless of stats Vardy has a lot more than 8 assists in my eyes

Whoever it was that said we'd need to play a similar style of play to what Leicester do to make it effective was spot on. He'd be useless if he was isolated. Pressing in a front three? He's your man.

I remember the question before about “Vardy for England” when we were doing well. I remember it again when we were doing badly and Vards looked like a headless chicken. The question looked a bit stupid then - as quite a few pointed out. Now it has arisen again, because we’re all getting a bit over excited about our current form, but the truth is the answer has always been the same.

 

I love Vardy’s attitude and he’s been brilliant for us over the last few games. He’s a pest. He reminds me to some extent of what players like Claridge and Dickov used to do for us or what Steve Bull used to do for Wolves.

 

But he isn’t an international. He just isn’t technically good enough and hasn’t got the quality to match his application. If he was clinical in front of goal it might be different, but unfortunately he doesn’t score enough goals either.

 

So we should just calm down and be thankful that he plays for Leicester.

I'm not sure anyone is saying he's definitely international standard, but as keeps being repeated. The England games we're talking about England have lost most of their strikers to injury or the u21's. So there is a space for someone much further down the pecking order to get a chance. Compared to the other options he's probably the most inform.

It really depends how serious his injury is and how long it will take to recover from any surgery. I'm not going to stop him going, but it will need to be considered from a medical point of view.

It would be incredible for him. Say England were playing tonight, I don't think I'd even mind if he was out for our last 2 games if it meant he won an England cap.
