What do England want from a centre forward? Do they want somebody like Crouch who is basically shit but fills his boots against minnows or do they want somebody to fill a slightly less prosaic role for the team? If we want to adopt anything resembling a high press he's the best England qualified forward irrespective of injuries. If we don't want to go that way then he should be absolutely nowhere near the squad.

Sturridge is very good when fully fit (which is hardly ever), Austin doesn't strike me as amazingly quick-but he can stick the ball in the net. Berahino can be unplayable on his day, but then again, so can Jamie Vardy. IMO Vardy is the only one out of all those players who would literally chase everything, causing mistakes and nervousness in the oppositions back four. We haven't seen enough of that from England, so, as ridiculous as it sounds, I think he could potentially thrive in an England side.

Id imagine berahino will be going u21 too. So on your list Vardy is 4th, and I'd argue he should be ahead of Austin. So call it 3rd/4th choice. And I'd like us to pick 4. So not as ridiculous as it seems, really. But still probably won't happen, it'll be Lambert and then we'll just take 3 strikers and double up on left backs or goalkeepers or something upsetting.
The Doctor Posted 10 May 2015 Posted 10 May 2015 I'd not be surprised if Woy took a look at him, Austin and Ings in the easy dead-rubbers like San Marino and friendlies, but I'd be shocked if he got much more than that - he's not young, he doesn't play for a top 5 club, he could be the best english striker around and still not get a look in as a result.

He's got a hefty amount of praise from Pundits, the general media and fans of other clubs alike. With Sturridge out, Berahino in the U21's, Lambert not featuring etc it's not the craziest thing.

So yeah, 4th choice for me, and Roy usually picks 4 strikers... IMO it's a close call between Austin and Vardy. If I was Roy I'd be looking at the amount of goals (17?) Ausin had scored in a terrible QPR side and be thinking 'that's the kind of goal scorer I want in my team'. Vardy does bring a lot more than just goals though, so it's a close call, but I'd probably just go with Austin if I take off my blue-tinted specs!

Then again if Hodgson is looking for players for a system he wants to play and not a system for the players he wants to play, perhaps it isn't that inconceivable that he'd give him a go as the left-sided forward in a 4-3-3.

RedSoxUK Posted 11 May 2015 Posted 11 May 2015 Walker, Rose, Delph, Mason, Chambers, Colback, Cleverley - mostly drab overrated English players who have made our dire squad in recent internationals. Vardy would definitely be in with a chance if his form and contributions had been consistent throughout the season. And unfortunately, England's usual possession oriented and overall dominance over opponents makes Vardy's inclusion even less likely, even though he proved he's capable of doing it when we walked the Championship. The England forwards don't have to be that intelligent with play, or menacing in attack - it's more of a 'right place at the right time' kind of gig, and Danny Welbeck's overvaluation and overestimation as a player has summed up how easy it is to score for the England team, especially against the Conference North tier defences of San Marino and Estonia. For these games, if anything you should look at Vardy's goal scoring record and attributes vs dog shit defenders and relay it to an international setting; he can do the job, I just think he's not as skilled or patient enough to break bus parking defences like a Roo or a Sturridge. Though if he continues breaking defences, scoring goals and creating goals, there's no reason why Vardy shouldn't be in the England squad; I couldn't think of a better impact sub to bring on in his current form.

This is why I included the likes ofsterling, Walcott Lennon and Ox in my list of players ahead of him in a 433 it is not just centre forwards he has to get ahead of in the pecking order, but all attacking players that can play on the left/right of a front 3 and we have players that are younger faster and have been doing it at a higher level for longer. If Roy picked him he would have to employ the same rotational front 3 approach we have at the moment, and give Vardy license to chase down defenders, rather than a rigid approach that would probably see him have to get out to the wing when we lose possession. The other problem is if Vardy chases everything and none of the other front 3 do he will just look daft, it works for us because Leo, Krama, and Nugent also chase down defenders harry the opposition and we press as a unit. I can't really see it, and if it did happen it could damage his confidence again.

QPR are a shambles and he's still managed to net about four times as many goals as vardy. Agreed he'd probably score a few against the likes of San Marino but I'm pretty sure that's not the benchmark for regular England call ups. As kitch says if he didn't play for us you wouldn't even entertain the idea.
