If he wants to be considered he needs to add more goals to his game, it's as simple as that, he needs to improve his conversion rate after getting past the last man, more often than not when he gets in behind he doesn't score or set-up a chance, not a criticism, but his chance on Saturday being a prime example, it is not just his shooting, despite all his assists his final ball needs improvement too, a few times this season he has done all the hard work and then not found the man waiting to sweep it home.

 

Not a criticism as such but if he wants to be considered for England he needs more end product, but for Leicester I wouldn't swap him for anyone.

He does miss easy chances. Southampton on Sat, the header against Newcastle, the one on one v Swansea being recent examples

He won't play for England for one reason. He is not good enough. Comparisons with Austin are crazy. QPR are a shambles and he's still managed to net about four times as many goals as vardy.

Agreed he'd probably score a few against the likes of San Marino but I'm pretty sure that's not the benchmark for regular England call ups.

As kitch says if he didn't play for us you wouldn't even entertain the idea.

Austin is an out and out goalscorer playing in a team that is set up to provide virtually exclusive service to him.

Vardy is a totally different type of player. Again, it comes back to what style of play England want to go with. There is one very specific type of football for which Vardy would be well suited even at international level (a high pressing game, probably as part of a 2 with somebody capable of actually scoring a goal). Otherwise he's just not good enough at the moment - there are plenty of better players with the ball at their feet but few better off the ball and defending from the front.

If you want to pick players on form, then yes he is good enough. Pundits and opposition fans and managers have been singing his praises for the last 8 games, he's been up for premier player of the month. He might never be your out and out goalscorer, but in the Heskey style of running and channels and creating chances then yes he could do a job. 8 assists is up there with the best in the league (bar Fabregas who is a mile away), even more when you think of the Penalties he has won.

 

As I said, if it happens it would be because we are missing lots of others due to injury or playing for the under 21's. England need to pick someone for those games though, so why not him. It might be his only chance.

Vardy needs to add finishing to his game to be considered. If he can do this next season then he's in with a shout - but can't see it happening this season.

 

I imagine Hodgson was looking at Albrighton. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get a call up.

Couldn't agree more.

On current form there are very few English strikers I'd not want to come up against as a defender.

And it's not only about finishing. Heskey scored some absolute pearlers, but could miss just as many.

Vardy would give international defenders just as torrid a time as he's giving Prem defenders.

Only Rooney and Welbeck are fit and available, then you have the likes of Austin, Lambert, Crouch, Defoe, Agbonglahor and Vardy competing for a squad place. Out of that list I would pick Vardy over the lot of them.

Must just note that, before posting this thread, I had no idea that Hodgson was at the KP at the weekend.

 

Still, glad to see it's kicked up a healthy discussion. He had his usual energy on Saturday, though his 1-on-1 may not have helped his cause. That being said, I still feel his main job, in our side at least, is to provide assists, and it's well-documented that he leads the way for us in that respect this season - 8 in total, and 7 of those have come since Tottenham, plus his 3 goals. And, of course, he set up Riyad's second in pretty fine fashion, drawing defenders and leaving his partner unmarked.

 

He has the most assists of any English forward in the top flight now. Only Henderson (9), Brunt (9), Baines (9) and Downing (8) have as many or more, and Brunt is the only one of those that plays any sort of real advanced role, while the others tend to get most of their assists from set pieces rather than open play.

That sort of play must have turned Roy's head more than anything, I reckon. I still acknowledge that it's an outside chance that he'll get so much of a sniff of international football, but with the qualifiers pretty much wrapped up in England's favour and friendlies on the horizon, stranger things have happened than for him to get a cap or two.

My point is I don't think he is technically good enough to play for England.

But he's not competing against Kane and Sturridge, or Berahino, or Carrol or Ings or anyone else injured or in the under 21 squad.

 

He's competing against Austin, Crouch, Abonglahor, Barnes, Wickham, Nugent, Gayle. Long term he might not be good enough, but we need strikers for those games.
