Zaid Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 Team v Slovenia: 1 Hart 2 Jones 3 Gibbs 4 Henderson 5 Cahill 6 Smalling 7 Wilshere 8 Delph 9 Sterling 10 Rooney © 11 Townsend #SvnEng
Lestoh Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 I don't reckon we'll see Vardy today, think Austin will take priority.

Guest kristianity77 Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 Do I want to watch this? Don't do it to yourself.
Big_Nige Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 This is going to be dull. Jones at right back. Do we seriously not have any better options? Only watching in the hope Vardy gets on. Sorry state compared to what I used to be like with the national team.
benpicko Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 Hopefully Sterling's shit again so Vardy replaces him on the left

benpicko Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 If that's the best England team we have were right royally fooked Are you aware of the existence of injuries and the U21 squad?
Guest Cujek Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 Are you aware of the existence of injuries and the U21 squad? That dosent account for the inclusion of rooney, sterling, henderson and jones, all total dog shit, delph as well should not be in the starting line up. Infact the only that can hold his head high after that is wiltshire, not just his goals but the rest of his game as well
Corky Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 Hope he enjoyed his 16 minute international career, waste of time in truth though great for him.
Matt Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 Whilst i'm glad and proud he got his cap (As i'm sure he is) I feel sorry for him that he had to cancel his (Well deserved) holiday for that crock of shit 15 minutes. As for Austin he must also be fuming, I don't understand the calls up, most pointless call ups in a long while/ever.

You have to have backup players yano.

Atleast try them in a pointless friendly when the senior/established players couldn't give a flying fook, atleast those two would have been chopping at the bit and wanting to prove themselves.
Corky Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 Yes, they are back up strikers but by the next squad the Under-21s will be available as could Sturridge. Vardy was called up due to lack of options and was barely given a kick and will now slip down the pecking order, along with Austin, through no fault of their own.
Bryn Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 Don't be so bloody wet guys, the chances of him becoming an England regular were always slim to none, he's got two weeks training with top players under his belt, he's made a name for himself, he's been capped for England ffs, he'll be utterly thrilled and if it's the only time he ever plays for them, that won't diminish his joy.

Vardy and Austin are nowhere near at the level of Rooney sturridge and sterling. Or harry Kane. It's like saying why doesn't pearson start Jacob blyth in a cup game.

It's like saying why doesn't pearson start Jacob blyth in a cup game. I wouldn't be against that. Always wanted to see Blyth play, i've heard good things about the lad, whether he'd make the step up well it remains to be seen. Although I bet we'll see Blyth feature in some pre-season friendlies, so there raising the question, friendly v ROI, why weren't Vardy/Austin given more of a chance as Blyth will during our pre-season friendlies. Not really sure how the two scenario's compare but you raised the point. Anyway we're going off on a tangent there.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 Honestly surprised Vardy got capped and Austin didn't

It's like saying why doesn't pearson start Jacob blyth in a cup game. And if our main strikers were either injured (Sturridge, Welbeck), wanting away (Sterling) and playing shit (Rooney and Sterling) or off on international duty (Kane), that would be a fair question
shailen Posted 14 June 2015 Posted 14 June 2015 Are people really shocked that Vardy did not play today? I'm actually surprised he got a run out at all in the last game. Rooney, Sterling and co are at a far superior level to Vardy. He may be able to make an impact in the odd game, but long term he does not have the consistency to prove that he is England quality. It's not about picking favourites. So many strikers cannot prove that consistency at club level. Call Rooney overrated or not, but he is the only English player in the last 10 or so years to score on a regular basis as well as produce consistently. The problem is why are there so many Spanish, South American, German and French players who are coming through on a regular basis to play at the highest level, but England have only produce Wilshere, since Rooney, of any player who could be world class. Sterling has potential. The reason lies is in the Premier League. Do we want a league where we get the best entertainment or do we want one which allows our English players to flourish. That's what other leagues do in the world. We should have a restriction on the number of foreign players in a match day squad to say 8/16. That means at least 3 English players will be in a teams starting line up. We have undoubtedly some of the top younger players, but they never come through any of our top teams and clubs on the continent don't want to pick up English talent. The way Wenger got Fabregas is not reciprocated by foreign clubs. We really need to give the English players the opportunity to flourish and develop with top game experience. But whilst the money is in our league, our clubs will recruit players that are ready made rather than look to their youth system. I don't buy the fact that we cannot develop the same quality players because of our style of play. The real reason is English players do not get the same chance as young players from Spain...etc. I love Barcelona because they consistently produce the best players from their academy. Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Busquets, Pedro, Pique, Alba...etc. They were all given a chance when their stock wasn't so high.

I don't think anyone expected him to play, but frankly he and Austin both should have done, Rooney should have been hauled off after about 55 minutes with how abysmally he was playing and Townsend was Townsend. People wouldn't expect him to play because it's not what England do, but watching the performance he can be rightly disappointed that he didn't get a chance (although not as much as Clyne)
