fuchsntf Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 MON LEFT US IN 2000. 2002 we went into admin 2008-2009 down to 3rd tier. Pearson and new owners team up. Our club, as a club, even before the MON days, began to struggle. 1990s Europe wide the shadow of admin hung over many traditional well known clubs. City like others before went into denial and laughed the idea off until 2002. 10 yrs out of the PL, and like it or not still struggling to hold our head above water, with the football gods being good to us, sometimes turning a blind eye, not just in citys case other clubs as well. Being in Germany, one is far away from the vibrations/rumours/undercurrents of behind the scenes issues. On this forum though, I still read some fans really dont appreciate or understand what Pearson and owners have brought to LCFC. The consolidation has a proffessional club, we can thank the present management set up . My simple question is # have we fully recovered, # are we still hanging on, # or maybe not out of it but in/on a solid and safe platform, even being able to take a relegation. Whats the feeling on the terraces with the true hardy fans..?? Sometimes its easy to forget 'The CLUB' issues positive or negative when only looking at the teams on the pitch successes and failures.
davieG Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 Have we fully recovered from Admin, probably Re the PL yes we're still hanging on and unless we really can enter a Matt Gillies type era when we were arguably one of the top 5/6 sides and for a substantial period did not have thoughts of relegation then we will be hanging on for a decent while yet. Can we? Who knows?
Renart Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 I think, to-be-honest, there is a very positive attitude around our club at present. We have a good relationship with the owners and we are appreciative. Fans realise how lucky we are. However, and this is a word of warning, incidents like the problems we had recently in Thailand show how fragile our situation can be. My biggest fear coming from that happening was that the owners might begin to wonder whether it is all worth it. Now, I wouldn't have expected them to have walked away there-and-then, but you only need a few incidents where they feel let down and they start to become tired and question why they are spending their money on our club. Of course the owners selling might not lead to a downturn in fortunes but it would certainly lead to uncertainty and the prospect of an owner coming in who does not share the same attitude of the fans - there are enough of them out there. That is why I was really quite proud of the fans reaction to that incident as they (most of them) instantly condemned it and recognized how embarrassing it was to our owners in their own country. We should not underestimate how hard that must have been for them - culturally speaking. We need to avoid that kind of crap.

True, but I doubt in a four/five year period we'll not achieve four domestic cup finals again. Granted people will say "but Manchester City fans never thought..." but that's a different situation because they're so rich and ultimately bankrolled.

But we achieved 3 domestic cup finals in four seasons under O'Neill.

Can we? Who knows? Glad you were one of the 1st to reply, I believe you are of my generation, and remember the good Gillies years, and understand well where I was coming from when creating this thread. Those years are long gone though, but has this > new club < fought off the demons and can we be now a club who can hold a top 12 place, not necessary in the league, but hold its viabilty as a club. Plus your sentiment of having a user name Davie.G, next to Weller 2 of my favourite ex-players proves you know your stuff. .
NewquayFox Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 Bit too young for the Gillies era but loved going down Filbert Street as a kid in the Bloomfield era, great players, great matches and we were a side all teams were frightened of. Fast forward to the O Neill era and i thought here we go again but sadly he left too. Now i think we are entering into another golden era with our owners, stadium, players and hopefully Pearson will steer us to greatness..... Up the City...
davieG Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 Historical as far as I can tell we've achieved any success by having a settled management, we've rarely if ever done well when we've had a succession of managers, logical you might say but what it means is that any decent spell of success is going to be down to how good Pearson turns out to be.
GaelicFox Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 1 Money seems to make a difference 2 Sensible owners and administration makes a difference 3 Sound management of playing side makes a difference Think we are doing ok on these points So really unless one or more of these three change YES we are ready to cement our place

shailen Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 Pearson has almost got everything right since he has been here. Brought the right players in; in fact all his signings have done well and none have really 'flopped'. The group of players he has built from removing the big egos in Beckford, Mills....etc, and combining what good we had with more determined and hard working players. Vardy, Drinkwater, James, Mahrez, Knockeart, De Laet...etc. Tactically he has got it right more often then not, and we play with a positive intent which is entertaining. The most impressive thing about Pearson is that he knows the teams strengths and will adapt to suit this. In his first spell, the football wasn't as free flowing and more predictable, even defensive, but that bought the best out of the team. Now we have more flair players and creative players and so we play a more direct passing, high tempo style. Pearson knows how to adapt to the players we have, and although he doesn't come with a big reputation, he takes a more pragmatic and tactical approach.
st albans fox Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 Our future depends on how much the owners want to invest in the club. It's no surprise that in general, the highest paid squads fill the highest positions in the league. As long as you have a management structure and people within it who won't countenance a debacle as happened at QPR, spending the money should guarantee you comfortable survival. We have seen the owners invest in excess of 100 million. They are entitled to take dividends to reduce that outlay. we will see where we are come August re investment in the squad. If we are willing to sell players that we don't have adequate replacements for. Last summer was a bit of a non event as the manager wanted to allow those who got us here to keep us up. I hope is isn't fooled into thinking our run in means he was right. we need to buy some more quality and we need to address the apparent 'wage equality rule'. There is a balance to be struck between squad unity and spirit and paying someone more who will really add to what you have. I doubt any of the current squad would begrudge Esteban earning more than they did last season. slowly but surely, the questions will be answered. If we don't buy too many and we have a poor start, I suggest the manager will be shown the door if the owners were prepared to invest. If not, it would confirm that we are working to a tightish budget.
Clever Fox Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 Sadly I am old enough to remember the Matt Gilles era. But to answer the ops question I do think we are on the up and progress will continue. NP did make a few mistakes last season which I'm sure won't be repeated. He's wiser now as are the players. With a few additions to the squad to take us to the next level. But never forget margins are small in football between success and failure. You need a bit of luck also. I think with NP in charge we can slowly move into the top 6 in the next few seasons. I've always said that the easy part is getting to the top in any sport. The hard part is staying there. You only have to look at the experiences of Forest, Derby and Coventry over the past 10 years to see how hard it is to stay there.
Deucalion Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 RE the owners wondering why they are doing this for the club, there is one situation which concerns me. Last season, even though it was pretty negative for a while, the flak was aimed at Pearson and not the owners. Now suppose we stay up for 3 or 4 years and then have another dodgy season. Unlike last season, people will have come to expect being in the PL and be less tolerant. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that the fans could turn on the owners. I suspect they would not like being booed. Maybe then they would consider walking away,
Wymsey Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 We're now streets ahead to our apparent 'fierce' east midlands rivals Derby + Forest.

They have given city a platform and more importantly a future. simple sayings that should keep all fans grounded... dont pretend to be more than you are. Be carefull what you wish for, but make sure your wishes make you feel uncormfortable. Put down targets you can achieve, but dont try to achieve what you cant target.
4everfox Posted 22 June 2015 Posted 22 June 2015 How can anyone say we will never be a top six side again? We can, give it four or five years and I firmly believe we will be. Liverpool are on their way to being a mid table side which will leave a place available. Man United, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. We could be that sixth team in a few years. Fifteen years ago the best six clubs were Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Leeds, Chelsea and Newcastle. In the years that followed that list changed frequently, the point being is that times change and clubs run their course at the summit. We haven't reached our peak yet and I have genuine belief that our peak could be challenging for the champions league places, maybe higher. The only clubs who are practically permanent as top clubs in England currently are Man United, Arsenal and Chelsea. The rest have the potential to implode.

MC Prussian Posted 23 June 2015 Posted 23 June 2015 We're now streets ahead to our apparent 'fierce' east midlands rivals Derby + Forest. Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, Wymesy. We've only got one season in the Premier League to show for as of right now. There's a need to consolidate our position within this division first before we can really start giving out the "big 'un" to whatever Championship side we'd like to take the p*** out, eh? We should know better how fast one can nosedive in terms of league position. Besides, we've had enough arguments and threads in general about what that "rivalry" truly means to Forest and/or Derby fans. They're more occupied with one another, so I don't see the point in still trying to create a scenario where both clubs allegedly seem to care about us.

My bro in law (a pro footballer) starts back training again this week so it's all gonna start happening again very soon. I recall similarly daft pictures being put up about this time last year. And then it became highly apparent we hadn't strengthened sufficiently. The point I was making was that we don't know about Huth yet, nor Cambiasso and it's almost time for the bulk of teams to start pre season training again. So yes it would be nice to see some players starting to join the club or even to secure the services of the two aforementioned, I await another immature pictorial response.....
Livid Posted 23 June 2015 Posted 23 June 2015 I'm happier with the state of the club in general than I have ever been in 40 years of watching them. The top 6 is a very big ask, Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City etc generate worldwide revenue which we can only dream of. There are a lot of bigger clubs than ourselves and more established who have the same aim. We are paying club record transfer fees that match what Arsenal paid for Bergkamp 20 years ago. Southampton seem to have a production line of talent which in my opinion puts them a big advantage over us at the moment. Yes we should aim for the top six, I just think it may take more than good organisation and "moneyball" signings.
