SPOTY 2015

Go on then. Who deserves it, who will win it and why?

For me it has to be Froome as a two time winner of the Tour, but I think that Jessica Ennis-Hill will get it. I suppose it is in the name, 'Sports personality of the year', and Froome has not endeared himself to the nation in the same way that she has. Maybe after his third tour he will. Hamilton has to be up there but he did win it last year, which I think will rule him out.

Excuse my ignorance but what has Jessica Ennis actually done in 2015?

yeah i wondered this too, she is odds on to win it but i have no idea why.

She won the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing in the year she made her comeback from having a baby. It has all the elements needed for a 'good' story.

.... plus we didn't give it to her in the year of the Olympics which will be remembered (+ points). Not saying that it would be my choice but it is likely to be the way it will go.

if AP was a flat jockey he'd probably win it. isn't gonna take much this year. can dettori win it? or is he too foreign?

It's going to be between Ennis-Hill, Hamilton (although winning it last year will go against him), Farah, Froome, and if Britain win the Davis cup, Murray (but I imagine the team will win team of the year).

If Bale makes the final 10 I can see the Welsh voting in droves, so I expect he's in with a shout too.

Welsh clean sweep, Bale and the national team. ;)

Actually have to say, despite hating them almost as much as I hate the first team, I'd give England B the team of the year award and give Michael O'Neil the coach award (there's a coach award right?)

The fact they've qualified is beyond brilliant. You could argue that Wales have underachieved for a long time and we shouldn't be surprised we've qualified.

NI however? ****ing miracle. Basically Britain's pub team. It's like Boston United making the FA Cup Final... (or even just the FA Cup proper tbh Boston.)

Harry Kane has been very SPOTY this year  lol  (sorry, a bit childish but couldn't resist)

came back from having a baby and won the world championships.

no real englishman apart from froome stick out. but is he eligible since he was born in africa?

AP won it. also dettori will never be able to emulate his magnificent seven. even then he didnt get nominated.

yeah i know, i meant if he was a flat jockey so he was retiring about right now instead of 6 months ago he'd probably win it again. but because it was 6 months ago (it'll be about 9 months between his last chelts and when we get to vote i think) nobody will remember anymore. same as root and broad, both had magnificent summers at the top of their game in their game's biggest event but because it was 2/3 months ago they're rarely being mentioned.

same every year. dettori has lit up flat racing this year, seems more popular than ever. dunno who decides/how you win the foreign one though which i think he'd have to go for.

Alastair Cook is probably not going to be a popular choice but this year he's captained England to an Ashes victory, scored 1000 runs and made the 8th biggest score by an Englishman in tests.

Given the opposition, frankly he should be mincing away with it; no idea why he isn't hot favourite myself.

cos he's a little boring and a lot of people don't really like him for no real reason other than the kp incident and piers Morgan's Twitter feed

Exactly

It's a load of rubbish. Man should have multiple SPOTYs to go with his runs. Definitely should have won it in 2011 after scoring 766 runs in an Ashes series and then 294 against India. Don't think he even got nominated, bloody joke.

Froome represents Britain, so he's eligible. Mo Farah has been nominated and he was born in Somalia. Barry Mcguigan won it too and he's not even British.

Because he's not even been England's best cricketer this year. Joe Root has been much better and more consistent than him this year and during the ashes. If any cricketer should be nominated Root deserves it far ahead of Cook.

I just lost a long reply and I won't bother writing it out again but their records are very similar this year, but Cook has been opening the batting and captaining the team at the same time.

Not a go at Root at all - he's been fantastic this year and last - but after all the stick Cook's had over the last 18 months to produce a calendar year with 3 centuries, 1200+ runs and captaining an Ashes series win with a young side is absolutely incredible.

Froome will have to get over the 'he's not British argument' before he wins it. Although we did once give it Greg Rusedski - wtf! He will have to win it a third time and hope nobody else does anything that year.
