Lewis Walker

HITC Sport understands that Derby County and Leicester City have both agreed terms with non-league Ilkeston for their midfield ace Lewis Walker.

The teenager is the son of Nottingham Forest legend Des Walker, who is helping oversee his youngest son's next move. His eldest son is signed up with his former club at the City Ground.

Forest did have an interest in Walker junior but their financial situation means they can not compete for his signature, and both Derby and Leicester are battling to land him.

Walker, who spent time on trial at Chelsea earlier this season, was one of their stars of Ilkeston's run in the FA Youth Cup, which saw them narrowly defeated by Newcastle last month.

Ilkeston have already sold Rhys Dolan to Barnsley from their prolific youth side and it is expected up to half-a-dozen of that side could be on the move in the next few weeks.

HITC Sport understands that Derby and Leicester have both been given permission to talk to Walker, who is set to make a decision on his future in the coming days.

Leicester could yet make it a double swoop on Ilkeston as they are battling Tottenham to land Walker's team-mate, central defender Jordan Wheatley.

I can imagine him going to Derby, there is more chance of him getting first team football there than getting into our team.

Maybe we can buy him and then loan him to Derby :D

Ilkeston must be a very good team at their level. They've had quite a few players looked at by championship/ premiership clubs over the last couple of years.

The  turnover of players is high. Its a commendable philosophy - get in academy rejects from local pro sides, get them in their first team and a chance at playing competetive senior football. They are full time but pay the same that most semi pro clubs in the northern premier would pay their senior players, so its sustainable. Plus the nominal fees they get for their players and the add ons including lucrative friendlies go a long way!

Maybe we should be talking to their head scout if he is finding so many young & gifted players?  Get ourselves another Steve Walsh!

I have it on good authority that the only Ilkeston town player we are scouting is Callum Chettle.Been watching him most of the season.

Well that's really awkward when Callum plays for Nuneaton. lol lol lol

My little cousin is in the first year of Ilkeston academy the standard is meant to be brilliant for such a lowly club.

They concentrate on taking on youngsters who've been released by top clubs. Play them in the senior side quite early on too

That's what Crewe have been doing for years. I think it should be the model for a lot of lower league clubs.

Peterborough are a good club at scouting for talent aswell. They must have made a fortune over the past 5 years.

They've also got a scholarship type thing going, which my brother started off on this year. Terribly ran though (admin wise) and he moved elsewhere after a month, including several false promises. Shame really, as he was supposedly one of the top players on the scholarship and had a chance at moving into the academy at some stage.

Not heard anything bad about the senior/youth squads though. They seem to produce an awful lot of talent for the size of their club.
