It does however give certainty to the amount paid in your own currency, so I can see why companies do it. Of course, that goes without saying. But if you know you are going to be dealing in another currency, and you also know there is a risk of a significant change in the exchange rate, then you might decide to hedge yourself at the current rate (before the event), assuming you were happy to deal at that rate in the first place. It would be like someone buying their holiday currency last week just in case. They may have been worse off doing so but at least they didn't have the risk of it getting worse.

Just saying that a hedge is itself a speculation of sorts, the risk being that the situation could change in your favour as well as against you, so it's still possible to regret your decision (with hindsight). We've already announced Ron-Robert Zieler and Luis Hernandez.
