Football League To Reform From 2019/20 Season

Was actually discussing this idea with workmates earlier this week.  lol

Makes perfect sense, at least half the Conference are basically run like professional league clubs anyway.

Makes sense to me. I know we're all used to it but 24 teams in a league is a bit excessive. I can't think of any league in the world that has that many other than Argentina (30) and I'm sure they only play each other once.

I'm for it.

There are too many big clubs/professional sides in the conference for it not to be part of the football league.

Big fan of the concept.

Apparently the promotion to the Football League is still to be decided. I'd rather 6 more teams come up from the Conference than Premier League B teams.

I wonder how it wil affect non league. Regional (north/south) for semi professional clubs directly below league three. Fa cup will be interesting

So lets make a second premier league too to include Forest, Derby, Leeds, Newcastle, Villa etc?

Teams are generally where they deserve to be.

I think it could be good idea though potentially

Well no because the football league are all professional clubs... In the conference we've got the likes of Torquay, Lincoln, York etc that are professional compared to the likes of Welling, Guisley, Chester etc that are semi-professional.

Would love to see the League Cup reformed at the same time to make it more interesting. Regionalise the early rounds into four or five different groups, guaranteeing local derbies, less travelling for away fans and bigger crowds.

I like it, also I think Chris Powell had a really good idea for the play-offs, to make them a bit fairer:

"If you finish third after 46 games you should go to Wembley.
The sixth-place team should play the fifth team in a one-off game at the fifth-placed team's ground because they finished higher and should have the advantage.
The winner of that plays the fourth-placed team in a one-off at their ground and then the winner of that plays the third-placed team at Wembley.
The handicap is there for wherever you finish in the league and I feel this should happen in the play-offs."

Have they said how they intend to get 24 clubs down to 20, as if you're the champions of the league below you should still get promoted that season?

The Premier league reduced club size many years ago but I can't remember over how many seasons it went.

that's a great idea. would definitely make it fairer for promotion so you won't always get a 6th placed team 20 points below 3rd getting promoted.

The FA are proposing a revision to the football pyramid, reducing leagues down to 20 clubs but introducing another league ... So 5 divisions of 20 teams, to reduce or even remove the fixture congestion and midweek games... Thoughts?

It reduced from 22 to 20 after 94/95. 4 down 2 up. The winner of Division 1 (Championship) then the winner of play-offs.

Have I read it right? They want it to be a closed shop for the top 5 divisions, so there's no promotion out of the 6th tier or relegation from the 5th

That's a kick in the teeth for the smaller clubs.

Would probably be detrimental to the lower league teams - couple less home games = less income

Part of the reason that supporting an FL club is decent is that there is another game before you can forget about the last one. I know people like to say players should be rested but when you're team is playing every few days it's great, waiting a whole week is tedious sometimes.

The way I read it was that relegation would be suspended for one season only. After that, the usual promotion/relegation to non league resumes

I think it's just that 1 year to get the Football League up to 100 clubs from 92.
