Webbo Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 Three times we have asked and three times we have been told: Bill Gates is the most admired man in the world. Since 2015, when we first begun to test the most admired men and women separately, Angelina Jolie has also come out on top both times. So in the third installation of YouGov's massive international study of personality admiration involving over 31,000 interviews, it's safe to say the global public values humanitarianism over politics. This year the story is in the movement further down the ranks. Thanks in part to a rise from 9th place to 4th (excluding local celebrities) in China, which makes up almost a third of the population of the 30 countries we've polled, Russian President Vladimir Putin is the biggest riser since 2015, moving from 11th to fifth overall. Stephen Hawking, boosted by box office hit biopic The Theory of Everything, rises to 5th place from 9th worldwide and is the most admired man overall in Britain – even including local celebrities such as David Attenborough. https://yougov.co.uk/news/2016/05/07/wma-2016/
Mike Oxlong Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 I look at those lists and can only conclude that Darwin was wrong.
Mark_w Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 Marine Le Pen is more admired than Rachel? I weep for humanity.

Fox92 Posted 3 August 2016 Posted 3 August 2016 These lists don't represent the majority of working class people and never will.

Are you suggesting that working class people don't look up to celebrities / actors / actresses and sport personalities? So who would have been on the list if it did represent working class people? Enlighten me please.

We all look up to people but that list (yet again) is ridiculous... People like Bill Gates I understand because they have built businesses up and are now so successful but people like Kate Middleton.. what does she do?

I agree man, Bill Gates is a great guy - not only pushed the world forward with his technology but donates a lot of money to charity / science / medicine, etc. People like Kate Middleton don't do anything but you'll probably find a lot of working class / middle class (for want of a better terminology as class systems are outdated and irrelevant in this day and age) people vote for someone like her. They see her on the TV, see her in trashy magazines and find her 'inspirational' for one reason or another. I can't say that there are many people that I 'admire' on that list - maybe Jackie Chan at a push.

Millions of those are working class an all.

A lot of working class people revere these celebrities more than most. It doesn't seem like an unfair reflection of the general population to me at all.
The Railway Man Posted 3 August 2016 Posted 3 August 2016 Four war criminals and the worlds next potential war criminal all in the most admired. Can't seriously be living in a world where admiration for Putin and Merkel has gone up in the last year surely?
