Voll Blau Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 Anyone seen this madness? Quote Any person is entitled to express their opinion. The League One season is only a week old but Charlton Athletic may have already won the accolade of the 'biggest self-inflicted PR disaster' after this letter to some of their season ticket holders has gone viral. The Addicks haven't gotten off to the best of starts, an opening day 2-0 defeat to Bury in the league was coupled with a 1-0 loss to Cheltenham in the EFL Cup, as frustration builds around The Valley. Ever since Belgian millionaire Roland Duchâtelet took over the club in January 2014, tension between the fans and the board has escalated as relegations have led to a number of protests from supporter groups. Fans have even created a group named CARD (Coalition Against Roland Duchâtelet) with the aim of forcing the Charlton Athletic owner out of the club. Russell Slade's side are about to play their first home match of the season against Northampton this weekend, but there's no denying that the atmosphere will be tense in the stadium, especially considering this letter that was sent to loyal season ticket holders. Quite frankly, if people pay their money then they're entitled to express their opinion. Have a read of this letter and pay particular attention to the last paragraph. That's right. An 'Agreed Behavioural Contract', meaning that fans are seemingly not allowed to post any kind of negative comment about the club on social media. If they do, their season tickets will be invalid. http://www.joe.co.uk/sport/pic-charlton-athletic-have-esseentially-blackmailed-their/79013
AKCJ Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 Incredible. Some of us on here would be fecked if Top ever did that.
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 Mental. Surely they knew this would happen though? The irony of them trying to curb their bad reputation of social media, as it's now being used to spread this around and they're getting slaughtered more than ever before. Some proper shit owners around, how did the FA decided people like this and the Oystens, let alone Tan and Allam are fit and proper people to run football clubs?
foxy boxing Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 fans have a right to their opinion, football clubs are more and more disregarding the fans because most of their money comes from the television and sponsorship ,clubs feel like they need fans less and less. that is the road we are heading down?

Not just that, they've actively appointed Charlton's chief exec to the FA Council as its Football League rep just last week! http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/sport/14667717.Charlton_chief_executive_Meire_appointed_to_FA_Council_as_EFL_representative/
Babylon Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 I would tell them to forget it and that weren't having another penny out of me until they stop being such total arses. I'd then spend the season slaughtering them even more on social media.
purpleronnie Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 Clubs in England seemingly do everything they can to hinder their own supporters. Baffling.
Manwell Pablo Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 The problem with a lot of clubs is they know fans are a commodity they wont lose no matter what they do, there is no need to treat your supporters well, it's not like the solution to the problem is like other business is it, if it was he'd just bugger off and support Crystal Palace. Football clubs have the strongest brand loyalty going can literally do what they want to their consumer base with no come back. Pretty lucky the way our club is run at the moment.

I agree with what you're saying, but anyone who puts up with that kind of stuff is a mug.
Fox92 Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 Charlton are seriously in a mess aren't they. Again, like Hull, it's not nice to see. Feel for the fans.

The fit & proper rule is one of those rules with no heart in it. A tickbox exercise. They'll do it to claim they're doing something but they won't do it properly and people have no answer.
boots60 Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 It's one fan. Apparently the individual concerned is a proper pain in the aris with a long history of abuse to club employees on social media & more importantly personal abuse in the stadium. There is a fine line from being opinionated & being a total twat. He now has the attention he so obviously craves. .

Damn your eyes, Boots60, I was about to point out myself that it was a letter to an individual, with no reference to what he or she had been saying, and then there's this big leap to "fans are seemingly not allowed to post any kind of negative comment about the club on social media." What about weird, veiled threatening ones of an implied sexual nature, for example? Would we not expect someone to take issue with that? Can't say anything these days etc etc etc, can't even say etc. I say loads of stuff all the time and no one stops me, hell, nobody even listens

The laws of the land come into play if his posts are that offensive, till that he can say what he wants and Charlton Athletic don't have the right to change that.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 Of course they have no direct control of what he says, but unless they fall foul of any sort of anti-discrimination legislation then I don't see why they wouldn't have absolute discretion over who they do and don't offer their goods (a season ticket in this case). It might be unfair and for all we know in this instance incredibly petty and a PR disaster but ultimately the club holds the aces, does it not?

Dutchalet, Tan and Allam are just clueless about English football and are general liabilities - Owen Oyston is a convicted rapist! The fit and proper persons criteria needs looking at.
