Cllr Malcolm Unsworth & the Thai owners

Cheeky git. If I was Top or Vichai I'd wipe my arse on a fiver and send it to him

As has been stated, the owners are clearly generous, hence their massive donation to Leicester Hospitals, contributions to local/personal charities, the Richard III fund etc. If they donate a couple of million to the council all it'll do is take another lane out of a major inner city road to make another fvcking cycling lane that no-one uses

Politicians should be bowing down and kissing the feet of people of Vichai, our Olympians and the sorts who funded projects like the Richard III events.

They bring boosts and benefits to the economy with a feel good factor that no government policy can bring to it's people, without them they'd be deservedly lynching them in the streets for some of things they have done to this country.

I think it would be great if the club or the owners invested in the city, make the city more attractive then the club will be more attractive to players and investors and sponsors, more likely to get hosting rights for tournaments and big gigs, other than just Kasabian. This will then attract more wealth to the city and working together the City, Tigers, the Council could finally start to realise the potential of Leicester to not be a shit hole.

I think the Councillor's comments are the wrong way to go about it, the way they have been reported they seem bitter and ungrateful, but then it is the Mercury so god knows what he actually said.

I'm glad someone got in there before me.

I actually don't have a problem with the Cllrs original letter in its entirety.

We're all football fans, premier league football fans, we're all pretty desensitized to the money in the sport. Talk to anyone that doesn't like the game, though, and the first thing they rail on is the money.

It is pretty disgusting if we're honest.

Most of the residential areas in the city limits are pretty ****ing divey, most of you think the city is a shithole and you get an article plastered across the local rag that a sports team full of millionaires just got a free super car each.

If you're not a sports fan, that's probably going to wind you up.

I think it's more that he has tried to link employees of a private business getting a reward and people or as he mentions 'fans' not being able to afford a bus fare into town to make a name for himself.  Is Corbyn coming to town? Did he ask his bosses for free travel for the poor and when it got shot down this was his plan B.

He has a brass neck to link the two as he gets over a grand a year for travel from the tax payer, along with a further 14k in expenses and whatever extra money he gets from his job and committees he's on, when hard working families have to pay it out of their wages.

"I want to see the dispersal of some of the assets wider to enrich the population's opportunities"This line is my favourite as it is complete socialist politician rubbish that sounds like it is meaningful but is really vague, especially as he's talking about a private business not public money.

Weren't you complaining quite vocally about Chinese investment into the country last year? (If it wasn't you accept my apologies)

Don't think that was me, all for fair investment especially in Leicester, the only thing I would have complained about is the Chinese and Russians buying up all the property in London, but that isn't investment.

I see that side of the argument, but he's taken a complete blind eye to everything that our club has done for the local economy.

It would be nice for LCFC to do plenty more in terms of pumping money directly into building local facilities etc but I personally think they do. The 2m donation to local hospitals was an act of obscene generosity. I can't remember Unsworth coming out and applauding that.

Personally, I think he's looked at the club with a hint of jealousy. As mentioned above, is he going to whinge at Walkers, Pukka Pies and the like?

the club isn't obliged to give any money away, but they do and that's without factoring the amount of jobs they create, the local hotels and restaurants that are being filled, the fact the pubs are drained on match days etc.

IMO, Unsworth has looked at it very one dimensionally, but I think he may he been misquoted. Surely an elected member wouldn't be so foolish?

Oh aye, I'm also not saying I agree with everything he said.

The majority in here are correct, the club's success has and will do wonders for the city and it's people and businesses. No question.

But I don't think his position is entirely self serving, he's not after a personal hand out from Vichai, he's just saying what a lot of people who aren't football fans in the city will be saying.

Yeah, that's spot on. I can't imagine that a bloke working on next to nothing really appreciates having to read about mega rich people getting mega bucks rewards.

But then again... tough?

I'm afraid not, friend. Of course there is no legal basis but it would be a welcome gesture for the club to recognise that match days provide strain on community infrastructure and do what they can to mitigate that impact. If the club were to develop the ground however maybe there would be a legal basis under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 but I'm not sure whether that the scope of that legislation extends to increasing the capacity of football grounds.

Well my very poorly made point was more directed to your support  of his support for the electorate he represents. Does he actually know what people think? have people been writing to complain about footballers getting gifts or is he just trying to  create a cause to make a point?

There are so many businesses that benefit from thousands of extra people coming into the city for the games. the people are a boost for the economy. These businesses pay business tax and the government benefits not in a small way from every  extra pint of beer sold and also from all the extra food sold too from the football traffic. If they choose to spend this money in ways other than the upkeep of the area from the extra foot traffic then its all on them, not a successful businessman to pay out more. A successful businessman who has recently donated 2 million pounds to a local hospital, i may add.

What about the poor bastards who can't afford a bus to see Oliver Mr Unsworth, you could have sold your ticket and paid for the street urchins who can't afford £4 to get into town.

Leicester City Council has been Labour controlled for as long as I can remember,. if he is unhappy with the state of the city maybe he should look at his colleagues and his elected Mayor who is a Labour politician...

Some interesting stuff on these declarations... like Soulsby's daughter being the owner of the exchange bar bang opposite the Curve. The cynic in me would ask a few questions about that.

Thought that was common knowledge, let's be honest when you have the mandate Soulsby has he can do what he wants, a Labour politician in Leicester City could get caught kiddy fiddling and still get elected.

Premier League clubs and players paid £2.4BILLION in tax during 2013-14 season
13:26, 4 JUL 2015
BY DAVID DUBAS-FISHER
The £2.4bn tax contribution could pay the salaries of around 93,000 police constables – over 90 per cent of all those in England and Wales

: Clubs and players paid over £2bn in tax in 2013-14

The Premier League, its clubs and its players paid a whopping £2.4 billion in tax in the 2013-14 season.

That's according to figures released in the Premier League's latest annual season review.

An Ernst & Young (EY) economic impact assessment of the league found that it contributed £2.4bn to the country's coffers in the 2013-14 season.

Over a third of that, £891m, was tax paid directly by the players.

EY calculated that the £2.4bn tax contribution could pay the salaries of around 93,000 police constables, which is over 90% of all of the constables in England and Wales.

The impact assessment also found that the Premier League supports 103,354 full time equivalent jobs in the UK.

That's comprised of over 6,000 people directly, for example the players, over 65,000 indirectly, such as those employed by companies that supply the league, and over 31,000 through induced employment which are jobs supported through the spending of those employed directly and indirectly by the Premier League, such as shop retailers.

It is also estimated that the league adds £3.4bn to the UK's economy.

Commenting on the report, EY's Chief Economist Mark Gregory said, "The success of the Premier League, which is grounded in the quality of the football competition, has created a 'cycle of growth'.

"This should help ensure that the significant contribution to the UK economy and society will continue to increase in years ahead."

This was of course 3 years ago so it will be even more now, especially after this year...

My point is simply that the club and vichai already contribute plenty to the economy
