What a travesty it would be if Rooney were to get Shilt's record appearances for England

...but now Rooney clearly is the boss and can play where he likes and is the only one decides when he retires. If Shilton hadn't had a job share role with Clememts, his record would have been forever untouchable. Retire now Rooney and give England a chance.

i think he will get the record, he won't go down in history as a total legend because he just hasn't performed at a major tournament or taken a game by the scruff of the neck. he is nowhere near the performances of world stars like messi and ronaldo and it is an insult to them to mention his name with theirs.England do not have any genuine world class players and anyone who thinks they do are kidding themselves

Leicester lad & all that, but he should never have lasted as long as he did.  Same with Rooney.

To be fair to Shilton.  He was in his 40's.  Rooney is only 30.

Rooney's no longer at his best and I'm not convinced about this midfield malarkey but fooking ell, he's our all time record goalscorer, there's a reason why he's got so many caps. He could retire, but if he still wants to help England and he's getting picked then why not?

Some people never give the bloke any credit and will take any opportunity to have a stab at him. OP is clearly one of those people.

I truly hate him.

The reason why he's got so many caps, aj, as with several of the useless bastards that play for our country, is because the FA is corrupt and our managers are pathetic.

The bloke is a shit performer when it comes to a big game.

Tbh I couldn't give a toss one way or the other.    If he beats his record he beats it.

Rather than being a great achievement it really smacks of underachievement.  Being able to get a cap no matter how poor you play for your club side, getting a cap no matter how badly you play previously for England.  Not having enough competition to push you out of the squad, being involved in tournament failure after tournament failure.

You 'hate' him? Bit strong isn't it.

Rooney doesn't pick his self. He has constantly been picked by England managers, whether you think that is right or wrong is up to you but to 'hate' Rooney for it is strange.

As for 'big game', he's consistently scored in the Champions League Manchester United, including one final against Barcelona. England have under performed for years at major tournaments and Rooney is one of many England players that have 'let us down' (as they say).

Shilton played for too long anyway. Playing at 40 in a World Cup, good grief, I couldn't imagine the reaction if that happened nowadays.

It would be a travesty, the idea of keeping him after the Euros is just strange and again shows how we have such a problem in moving on in this country.

Allardyce's comment at the weekend saying "it's not for me to tell him where to play" was probably the most bizarre thing I've heard from a manager, you do get the feeling nothing has changed in 50 years at the FA and the sponsors/corporates are still demanding names on a team sheet.

Nothing wrong with it if you are good enough, you wouldn't get many Italians not wanting a 40 year old Buffon in Russia.

Good point can't argue with that.

Also arguably the greatest goalkeeper ever (although Banks would be my choice), Lev Yashin, was either 40 or 41 when he last turned out for Russia...just hope to fcuk Rooney doesn't change his mind and is still picking himself when he's 40 and seen off yet another England puppet manager...

As others have said, I'm convinced someone else is picking the team now.

We deserve everything we get when major tournaments come around, we have no desire for change at all and are happy to bob along with the same old, Einstein nailed it when he said "the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result".

That's what we do.

Should he take it upon himself to say he doesnt want to get picked??

Managers pick him, give him the captaincy.

Guy could break the record caps, scores 50+ goals and in doing so becomes hated.

Grow up.

Rooney might well be 30, but he plays like a 40 yr old. The difference between him and Jamie Vardy is huge. One is absolutely exhausted and the other is in his prime.

Exactly right, Rooney has trained extensively since he was what 16 or so? Vards came into it at a later stage. The young Wayne Rooney was a brilliant player, no doubt about it. the media end up lauding his passing range nowadays, something Danny Drinkwater does every week but goes unnoticed it seems.

It's naive to build a side around Rooney of 2016 who earnt this reputation in a position he no longer has the legs for at international level. There are better options in central midfield than Rooney at this time - Drinkwater for one.

There is no denying he's an amazing talent but I am yet to see the re-invention of his game to the highest standards a la Scholes, Beckham etc....

Sam needs to be brave - not Hodgson mk 2 and that means getting rid of Henderson and Lallana as well.
