Joey Barton

Double trouble for everybody's favourite scouse philosopher. Rubbing up everyone at Rangers the wrong way & looks like his brief sojourn north of the border is all but over. On top of that is being investigated for betting irregularities, had a punt on Celtic losing to Barcelona by a large margin. That's hardly a gamble though.:o

Was trying to think of a witty response to your spelling mistake but you beat me to it lol

I will be surprised if Barton plays again for Rangers. 3 week suspension at the mo but im not sure they will want him back

His time at Rangers is finished I think. He's said some things that will not win over anyone at the club. I think the current suspension is only for the club to decide to cancel his contract 'by mutual consent'.

Edit: I suspect they'd have him back at Burnley though.

Shit footballer, standard thick cvnt.

He's only famous because he's a gobshite on twitter at the end of the day. Otherwise he's just a championship Lee Cattermole.

so he put money on Celtic to get whipped by Barcelona, the odds must have been very low and everyone and his dog would have done that? same with Celtic to win the league. the guys football career is pretty much over anyway and he is clearly looking for a media career, i see him in the same light as gary neville but angrier?

I can't see him ever having a mainstream media career on the so-called 'respectable' channels. He'd be more of a shock-jock.

I've not formed a personal impression of him as a player, though it seems he's a bit of a henchman, but I've certainly heard him speak. He says what he thinks, fair enough, and isn't quite the ignorant savage that some paint him as but he's not ever so good at listening and appreciating what someone else has to say. He tends to try and shut people up with his own opinions.

Wonder how long it'll take before someone says, "He'll do a job in midfield with Amartey and Drinkwater."

Always liked him as a pundit to be fair, seems to know his onions and is honest and upfront in his opinions with a reason why he thinks what he does. Wasn't it Joey who made Danny Mills look like even more of a mug on the radio too?

Clearly has anger issues and hes not as good of a footballer as he thinks he is!

I've heard more people try and paint him as some sort of streetwise philosopher than an ignorant savage.

He's far more the latter than the former. Wow, he's a footballer but he's heard of Nietzsche. Well done, Joey, regular MENSA you.

He refused to say sorry to the manager after swearing at him

He had an "altercation" (shall we say) with Halliday after the Celtic defeat. There was no mention of actual fighting just a serious argument. Barton put out a statement saying he was just passionate and expected a better performance against their biggest rivals which nobody can argue with, I just wonder to what extent this went on considering he's been banned.

I just don't get suspensions either, because he's got to come back after three weeks. Surely the club should just either terminate his contract or resolve the issue.

Barton is one of those players that is annoying when he plays against us but I think he's a great pundit.

Agree. Heard him quite a bit on the radio last season and he makes a refreshing change. Would sooner listen to him than many of the others (Claridge / Savage / Townsend/ Mills)

I agree with you 100% Fin if you consider Joey within the rest of the wider world, but if you compare him to the majority of other football pundits we have to listen to, he is sooo much better than most of them. All he does to deserve that recognition is have reasoning for his opinions - really nothing special, but it shows the durth of football pundits around these days!

cant wait for his book. the daily mail interview about it online today was fascinating. he is a bizarre individual but for some reason i can't help but like him a bit.

"if you hit one you may as well hit two or three" was a great quote from that article.

In my opinion, and to be fair to him, I do think he is some sort of streetwise philosopher. Some sort. That is, in as much as many people are philosophers (you don't need to have been to Oxbridge to talk of life) and I'd certainly consider him more 'streetwise' (in the word's commonly accepted sense) than most people I know. His upbringing was hardly what you'd call model and he was schooled in hard knocks... and it's showed. The guy is/was little short of a thug sometimes - albeit one that can think. The two are not mutually exclusive,

He's capable of putting together a well considered argument so for that alone I'd class him more capable than a monosyllabic moron. The issue I have with him, and as you suggest in your last sentence, is that he seems unaware that many people are equally as gifted. It's not that what he says has no merit, it's that he seems to think he's the only one that can put an idea together and, worse still, thinks that only he possesses 'the truth'. It's his combative, black and white, right v wrong nature again. The guy's a scrapper, physically and mentally.

When he's calm, he can actually speak rationally and verbally put cretins like Danny Mills in their place. For a footballer, he can talk a lot of sense. Obviously the main issue is that he gets fired up too easily. Wtf was he doing at the start of the season, saying that he's too good for the league, Rangers can challenge for the title and that he's 5x the player Scott Brown is, before he'd even kicked a ball for them? He'll never learn as a footballer and there's only so many clubs that will risk having him on their books. He has been woeful for Rangers, on and off the pitch. Bizarre given the great season he had at Burnley last year.

The man was clearly a **** in his youth and he hasn't really learned a lot since, other than swatting up on his English from time to time. Despite all that, he will make a much better pundit than some of the drones we listen to at present.

I quite like him. You can see he had a very difficult upbringing and you can see in his brother how badly things could have gone for him. He had a lot of spats early in his career: punching Ousmane Dabo, stubbing a cigar in that youth players eye, his prison sentence... But somewhere along the way I think he's recognised what an opportunity his life has given him and tried to leave his past behind. Yes it's funny to laugh at him butchering the words of Nietzsche, Kant etc. but at least he's trying to make the most of his situation and I respect him for that. I'd take his semi-informed opinions over the drivel of Owen, Mills etc.

From what I can tell from his suspension from Rangers, he had an argument with Halliday then laid into Warburton as well, hence his suspension and Halliday not receiving any punishment. It's not about the money for him, I'm sure Burnley and Celtic offered him more money, he's up for the challenge
