I think as a one-off, it's actually an OK idea, although - surprise, surprise - it's going to be executed fvcking terribly.

Host city bids should have been limited to countries incapable of hosting a tournament on their own, and groups regionalised as such (i.e. have a group playing games in Cardiff, Dublin and Glasgow) to save fans' travelling expenses.

Instead it's just gone to the highest bidder which *shock* includes Wembley.

This was announced a while ago.

Wembley will host the semi finals and final.

The other venues have a variety of group games, Round of 16 and QF.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2020

19 cities bid in total - Stockholm, Cardiff, Jerusalem among those rejected.

I think it's a pretty good idea, considering they didn't have any viable individual bids for Euro 2020

The only expressions of interest for hosting was from Turkey, a joint bid from Scotland/Ireland and Wales and a joint Azerbaijan/Georgia bid but none of these were ever formalised.

So from that point of view, the pan European format is not a bad option

After reading about it earlier I assume it would be for the following points

  • Of the 13 selected cities, eight have never hosted a European Championship tournament game before: Baku, Saint Petersburg, Copenhagen, Bucharest, Dublin, Bilbao, Budapest and Glasgow.
  • Of the 13 selected countries, seven have never hosted a Euro finals game before: Azerbaijan, Denmark, Hungary, Romania, Republic of Ireland, Russia and Scotland.
  • Of the 13 selected stadia, only two have hosted a Euro finals game before: the Stadio Olimpico and the Amsterdam Arena. The original Wembley stadium hosted games and the final in Euro 1996, but although on the same site, this is classified as a different stadium to the current Wembley Stadium.

it appears some places rejected the package they was offered

  1. Minsk
  2. Sofia
  3. Jerusalem
  4. Skopje

and others were rejected by UEFA

  1. Solna
  2. Cardiff

Worth noting the Wembley semis/finals is part of a deal, I believe, which means we'll back Germany for Euro 2024. They backed that, we back them.

England "considering" a bid for Euro 2028. Probably the only way we'll qualify by then (assuming host still qualifies automatically)

Germany a shoe in for 2024, especially now they've dropped the Hamburg 2024 Olympic bid

Sounds like from what I read we were sniffing around 2024 before Germany came along, so it'd make sense for us to put it back.

With Russia and Qatar coming these Euro locations could be an ideal antithesis to the FIFA farce

Only if you fancy getting mugged.

lol

Can't speak for Baku since I've never been (guessing from your remarks you haven't either) but the other 2 are great places to visit.  Budapest's easily one of the best and friendliest cities in Europe and Bucharest's bloody lovely too when you're not stuck inside hiding from the 40+ degree continental summer.

I'm just intrigued reading travel recommendations from official sources, such as embassies. Budapest, Bucharest or Baku don't really appeal to me on a personal level, and according to latest news, thievery, pickpocketing and fraud have been on the rise in all three of them.

Plus, most major European cities or capitals offer no direct flights to Baku (only one from London, btw) and it's half a World's journey. Why does the regular football traveler need to visit one of the most corrupt countries on the planet?

It's widely accepted that Budapest is one of the finest cities to visit in Europe. I've heard nothing but good things about Budapest and also Bucharest (apparently similar to a lot of Italian cities without the traffic). I'm surprised by your opinion in all honest.

Voll got it bang on. Should have regionalised it. Should have made open to countries unable to bid alone.

I went to Budapest this summer and would 100% go back if we had a game there, no idea where you've got your info from because it's a brilliant city.

I'm not talking about the sightseeing part of it and the amount of great tourist attractions (and let's not forget how cheap it is in Budapest or Bucharest) and I'm aware that everyone prepares differently for a trip abroad and that some travel for the weekend only (so less time to be perceived as a tourist).

My concern is the safety aspect: http://www.budapestbylocals.com/safety-in-budapest.html or https://romania.usembassy.gov/acs/crime.html

And that is all.

Baku - meh. Who wants to travel to Azerbaijan? Pain to get to.

London has a higher pick pocketing numbers lol

In 2010 everyone was going to get murdered.

In 2012 all black people were going to get lynched.

In 2014 we were all going to get mugged by street urchins.

In 2020 we're going to be pickpocketed to death.

Basically we should hold every major sporting occasion in Switzerland.

We're trying to get the 2026 Olympic Winter Games to Switzerland, let's see how that goes down with the taxpayer. :D

Wembley Stadium will stage an extra four matches during Euro 2020 after UEFA announced Brussels will no longer be used as a venue for the tournament.

Belgium's capital city was due to have three group fixtures and one last-16 tie, but delays over a new stadium forced UEFA's executive committee to make changes to the schedule.

The announcement means London will now host seven games in total, with Wembley already confirmed for the semi-finals and final.

Despite being in the running as alternative options, Cardiff's Principality Stadium and Stockholm's Friends Arena missed out on the chance to replace Brussels.

While the full schedule is still to be confirmed by UEFA, the Stadio Olimpico in Rome will stage the opening game.

Each host nation that qualifies will be guaranteed two home matches in the group stage.

Seems a bit daft giving extra to Wembley when there's nothing wrong with Cardiff, and it wouldn't effect travelling for teams scheduled to play these games

Might as well of let us host the whole thing

They wouldn't. Whole reason we got the final is so they have an excuse not let is host the whole thing for a while.
