Absolutely horrific. Looks like the boat got caught in the boat lift conveyer and flipped with the four victims being crushed in the conveyor machinery.
Wymsey Posted 25 October 2016 Posted 25 October 2016 Apparently there was a girl waiting on the side and saw her Mother get killed. Only been to a ride complex once but the feeling of not knowing what will going to happen next prior to a fast ride starting has put me off greatly. There was a reported issue with that ride early on in the day. Shares in the owner are down a lot unsurprisingly.
kingcarr21 Posted 25 October 2016 Posted 25 October 2016 Horrific accident. Such a shame. Can only hope they find out how it happened so it doesn't happen again
stripeyfox Posted 25 October 2016 Author Posted 25 October 2016 The thing is this is a fairly sedate ride. The sort you go on if you're scared of the big, fast roller coasters....
Trav Le Bleu Posted 25 October 2016 Posted 25 October 2016 Very sad. Saw this reported this morning as four people in critical condition - shame they didn't make it.

The ambulance service said the victims had injuries "incompatable with life". Which is a nice way of saying extremely dead - possibly with multiple amputations/decapitation

They say that 2 people drowned and 2 people got caught in the conveyor belt. I clicked on that Reddit link you posted and the conversation quickly changes to Brain Eating Amoebas
kingcarr21 Posted 25 October 2016 Posted 25 October 2016 Just read up about it and the ride itself is 34 years old. Older than me. The 4 peoples ages range from early 30s to early 40s. Such a shame. For family to witness it is truly tragic. Hopefully lessons are learnt to prevent it ever happening again.

Absolutely horrendous, though. Safety in these kind of parks is usually paramount, and thankfully ride accidents seem extremely rare. Horrible to have two high-profile ones this year.
RowlattsFox Posted 25 October 2016 Posted 25 October 2016 Rapid rides are probably one of my favourite rides, just because you can enjoy them as a family and with those who don't like the faster and 'scarier' rides. Tragic accident but 'boats' shouldn't be tipping over.

Oh, well that explians it then. Terrible accident though, should never have happened
stripeyfox Posted 25 October 2016 Author Posted 25 October 2016 There should be no way for the raft to become trapped. You would think the conveyor would have an automatic shut off if something does get stuck If I recall correctly from going on one of these rides at Legoland, on the boat lift bit which takes you back to the station the belt is - how do you say - fully covered - like the conveyor at the supermarket, so at least if someone did get ejected it wouldn't mean being horribly mangled to death. This ride seems to have had quite wide open "slats". That being said, it has operated for 30 years without incident up until now.

Drew Peacock Posted 25 October 2016 Posted 25 October 2016 Sometimes you think you are having a shit day. Maybe Leicester lose and you're in a bad mood. Maybe your car needs a bit of work to get through its MOT. Then you hear that 2 children are thrown clear of an accident at a theme park and witness their mothers crushed to death. If there was a creator of this world, I'd like to have a quiet word with him when I go. Hopefully I'll keep perspective for a while after hearing this, but I guess when I'm at Tottenham on Saturday it won't really pass through my mind. I know this doesn't affect anyone on here personally and hopefully there won't be a minutes silence at the next game. But sometimes I do question my priorities, and will give my 2 children an extra cuddle tonight and be thankful we're all here for today at least.
Wymsey Posted 25 October 2016 Posted 25 October 2016 An emergency stop button (in the control room etc) isn't always helpful, as incidents obviously like this and other fatalities in the park at amusement park occur before it can be pressed and the ride stopped manually. I'm not a health and safety advisor but to stop any potentially fatal faults from happening there needs to be an automatic (like stripeyfox says) system in place - one that makes the ride know itself that there's a mechanical problem and thus safely stops the ride from continuing and informs the management that there's a problem 'here and there'.

Yeah it'a a tough one. On the one hand, these kind of incidents are incredibly rare. There are hundreds of theme parks around the world which operate safely most of the time. An automatic shut off if the lift detects something "trapped" would no doubt have helped. Yet the automatic system was in place at Alton Towers and worked correctly, only to be manually over-ridden by an operator.

RIP. treasure your life because you don't know what's coming around the corner
Freesolo Posted 25 October 2016 Posted 25 October 2016 This is horrific, The rapids is the last ride you would expect anything to happen its a family ride?
AS78UK Posted 25 October 2016 Posted 25 October 2016 Worryingly a lot of rapids have open slats on the conveyer belts. Expect some changes of the back of this accident. Absolutely horrific, got to feel for the families involved. RIP.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 Horrible accident. Been on the ride a few time, such a tame ride too. You just float down the river at semi leisurely speed. Looks kike the conveyor belt mechanism has gone a miss tragically
foxy boxing Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 such a terrible accidet, i feel for the children who witnessed their mother being killed, no one should have to suffer that. proper maintenance checks and adequate training for staff should be paramount on theme park rides.
Fox92 Posted 26 October 2016 Posted 26 October 2016 Sounds horrific. Reports that the paramedics who attended the scene are undergoing counselling due to the trauma.
