Leicester City and The Poppy

Recommended Posts

Posted

Dear Leicester  fans, my name is Chris and I work for The Royal British Legion.

I just wanted to let everyone on the forum know that during Leicester’s  game versus West Brom the club will wear shirts embroidered with a poppy in show of Remembrance. These shirts will be signed and auctioned with all proceeds kindly donated to the Legion.

Leicester City FC have been big supporters of the Legion by displaying the poppy on their shirt, allowing us to raise incredible amounts to support the future of the living and also help us uphold the memory of fallen. If you would like to own a piece of Leicester  memorabilia whilst also supporting the Legion please keep a look out on the club’s official channels for when the auction goes live in late November to early December.

For more information on our partnership with the all Premier League clubs during the Poppy Appeal last year please visit http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/partner-with-us/premier-league/

Many thanks for reading, and to the moderators, apologies if this appears to be an advert-type post

"Advertising post"

Mate, whatever you're selling, I think a lot of people are buying it.

Good luck to you.

It's a great pity FIFA don't share the same enthusiasm for the Poppy as we do here in the UK.

Despite what they say it is NOT a "political statement" but worn as a mark of respect tothose millions who paid the ultimate sacrifice over two World Wars are numerous other conflicts with their lives.

I might be wrong but I think that we were the first club to have a poppy on the shirt

Yeah Leicester introduced the Remembrance fixture. Blackburn at home in 2003 I think.

I always love the rememberance fixture. Our club does it all so well. Weren't we one of the first to have the poppy embroided on our shirts?! Seem to remember it being against Blackburn for some reason.

There's something so surreal about 30,000 people completely silent while the Last Post plays, and then the extraordinary roar when the ref blows his whistle.

its UEFA not fifa.

they may be being diplomatic the Germans may be up upset by it even some of our Muslim friends. We may find out tonight I would like to think we have asked.

I used to sell some t shirts pirate designs I could not export to parts of Europe.

I support the Poppy Appeal but understand the discomfort some feel. Lots of nations have fought and won and lost lots of wars. It could get messy if they all wish to commemorate their dead.

You could argue the Poppy is a political image. It came from a patriotic poem which ended in a call to arms. It was promoted by Douglas Haig, one of the wartime leaders with the lowest of regards for life. It was popularised pretty much exclusively by the winners of WWI. There's a large group of veterans who also say it symbolises some of the wrong things; not to mention that it's been widely used as a nationalistic symbol by the extreme right for years. And, on top of that, the Chinese have long found it offensive because of some (incorrectly, I think) perceived association with the opium trade and all that.

But I wouldn't be offended by a footballer wearing a poppy any more than I'd be bothered by a Hindu footballer wearing a big red swastika on his armband. If you wear it for a good reason (e.g. to remember the tragedy of war, rather than to thank god that nearly 900,000 servants of the mighty Empire gave their lives so that the Treaty of Versailles might come to pass), then it'd be a shame for people to get angry about that. Whether it's within FIFA's rules, I don't know.

I don't think Germans on the whole have a problem, neither Muslims either, not Muslim players at least. The Irish on the other hand...

I think most foreign players and coaches just wear it without really considering what they are doing. 'When in Rome' sort of thing. if you look at the poppy as a symbol for support for the Armed forces at all times and not just WWI then I could see many premier league managers and players having issue with that... The Argentinian players/managers, possibly the japanese, the Turks and the list of countries could go on... Most players who are foreign nationals would probably disagree with that interpretation of what the poppy symbolises or wouldn't want to speak up about it. The Irish west brom player is  brave and principled to do what he does in the face of what mass criticism he will face.

The main point is it means different things to different people. I support the idea of recognising those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and remembering what they died for but also I can appreciate those who see it in another way.

The use of the poppy has nothing to do with politics or a poem.

It is used as a symbol to remember the dead that died on the battlefields'. In WW1 as the poppy was the only flower that grew on the battlefields.
