I didn't say we shouldn't try it again, but you cannot judge someone on twenty minutes worth of football, and arguing that you not only can, but that it is the rule rather than an exception for players playing out of position, is absurd. WTF is this absurd 20 minute rule you're going on about? Ranieri like me clearly thinks the lad, though specialising as a full back, can play at left wing if required, that's all. Not all the time, just if required. It's clear the lad has ability on the ball - this is why Liverpool were wanting to pay £8million for him.

Chilwells time at left wing amounted to twenty minutes because Fuchs came on with twenty minutes left...
murphy Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 I don't think that you can be too dogmatic on the idea of swapping players positions. It could be a useful way of keeping Chillwell and Fuchs in the same team. I mean Amartey is a converted centre half and James Milner had a great game at left back for Liverpool yesterday. On the other hand, look at the difference in Albrighton when played on his natural right side. I guess some players are more versatile than others. It is worth a try. Might work, might not.
The People's Hero Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Chilwell really impressed me off the ball with his concentration. As much as you can keep track of this on tv, he was constantly checking across the line and never have his man too much space. So combative as wel and stronger in the tackle than I've previously seen. It's early days yet but I'm now believeing that if managed correctly and if his head is right, he could go a long long way.
dedlock Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Anyone remember total football? Players at this level should be adaptable, able to play in a different position or a different way as the state of the game requires.
Koke Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Chilwell looked better at LB imo. Solid defensively, tactically sound and good technical ability. All the things Schlupp hasn't got and will never get. Plus he can actually bomb forward and doesn't get a brain freeze at the half way line like Simpson does.
Koke Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 On a different note, feel slightly bad for him since all his debuts have been bad losses . LCFC debut was in the League Cup loss against Hull in 2015. His Champions League debut was the 5-0 loss to Porto and his Premier League debut was the 2-0 loss to Everton.
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Thought it was a very clever tactical move yesterday from the management team to bring Fuchs on and move Chilwell to left wing. It meant not only could Chilwell get forward, but it also meant we had two left sided defenders on one side too. It worked well.
foxes21 Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Look how solid we were, when we played with two defensive minded wingers (Albrighton & Chilwell). In all honesty, I think Mahrez's poor defensive work has impacted us this season. Yesterday, we were able to keep our shape for virtually the entire game but when Mahrez is at RW our CM's get pulled to the right to cover him which leaves big holes in the middle. Keep him at CAM. We should sign another winger that can defend. Keep Albrighton on the right wing, and the new winger can compete with Gray for left wing.

His FA Cup debut was alright though, 2-2 draw vs Spurs. In fact I thought that he acquitted himself very well in both that game and the replay, which was seemingly forgotten when everyone was bashing him after Chelsea and Porto.
foxy boxing Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Let him develop naturally as a left back before we put him in other positions. Let him craft his skill as a left back first and foremost and then develop him to play other positions. We have plenty of time to develop him and need to do it in the right way
NewEnglandFox Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 It won't be long until the headlines say "Big club plan to trigger Ben Chilwell's £20M release clause."
NGoloMode Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 He's such a good left back though. Let him learn the position he's been playing his whole life. Too many young players get moved about and lose the consistency in their game.. Chamberlain, Dier, Jones, Wilshere.
fox_favourite Posted 2 January 2017 Posted 2 January 2017 From what I've seen in the last two games, it looks like he's been working with Fuchs. I thought his performances in the last two games were in the same style. Chilwell has a fantastic mentor in him as I think Fuchs is genuinely one of the best left backs in the prem. Chilwell's reading of the game has improved and his decision making is a carbon copy of Fuchs I thought.

M0901 Posted 2 January 2017 Posted 2 January 2017 I was at the game and besides my fiancée telling me repeatidely that "that Chilwell is fit", I believe he had a stormer in both positions. So composed, assured and has the willingness to get forward on every occasion. I noticed toward the end him chasing a lost cause against Reid near the corner, this despite being able to tell he was exhausted. He gave it everything and you can see his futures bright. Just hope he doesn't randomly get left out of the side now, I can imagine Fuchs starting today as he's the fresher man

I'd be surprised if Chilwell starts today. He certainly deserves to, but he was visibly flagging towards the end against WHU so starting him on the bench is probably the smart move. Hopefully he'll understand the reasoning for that; the last thing we want is for arguably our best prospect becoming disenfranchised already... Going forwards, I expect we'll be seeing a lot more rotation at LB, or even a switch to having fuchs on the left of a back 3 with Ben at LWB
