I went to the Everton game and yes I agree that Chilwell is a very exciting prospect for the future. However I think a few people are getting carried away. Chilwell made a fantastic run in the first half and managed a cross that was really dangerous but after this I saw quite a few head scratching plays from him. A few times he stormed forward and was really not in control of the ball but the fans were loving him as they like to see passion and effort. The ball was rebounding everywhere and he was lucky he didn't lose the ball earlier on one occasion. It seemed like he didn't really know what he was doing, just run with it and fingers crossed... Another occasion he bombed forward and wasn't even found and left us totally exposed on the left because Abrighton was in possession (the person who should cover him if he does bomb forward) Abrighton inevertably lost the ball and were lucky we didn't get punished further... Chilwell's decision to go for a run forward when Abrighton was in possession was pure inexperience. Again the fans just appreciated the effort. I really do think he's going to develop in to an excellent player over the coming years but I'd have Fuchs over him any day of the week and a definite no in midfield. Chilwell still has lots to learn. Spot on. I think people (understandably) are so disillusioned with our league performance, they are jumping on something positive whenever they can. Fair play. However, Fuchs is mr consistent. Chilwell may have a great game, followed by a stinker. I'd definitely stick with Fuchs.
LittlethorpeFox Posted 29 December 2016 Posted 29 December 2016 you see posts like this and despair but am reassured at the 80% of you ridiculing the idea. If we based our Prem survival on phrases like "it can't be much worse than what we're seeing at the moment" as a justification for playing kids out of position, then i think we will be safe as houses lmao!

Chilwell still has lots to learn. You're absolutely right, Chilwell does still have a lot to learn. Although he was our man of the match against a poor Everton side (we were all over them early in the game and didn't progress), his previous games and turning his back on the ball on at least 2 occasions is still in my mind. It's difficult to drop him after this 1 good performance, as Ranieri has shown on quite a few occasions now he is not going to change the "proven" side for an inexperienced player. Regarding the OP, I can't see how a case can be made to play him out of position, is it so that we can play another player out of position to accommodate him? My thoughts are just let him develop what he's already pretty good at, and will become great at it as he gains experience.
HighPeakFox Posted 29 December 2016 Posted 29 December 2016 I've come to the conclusion that some posters here are stealing a living, making their posts wearing trainers whilst making preparations for going to the AFCON. Which is literally embarrassing...
crazyleicester Posted 29 December 2016 Posted 29 December 2016 I think us tinkering has been the biggest difference between this season and last. Well, that and our total lack of form I personally dont think Chilwell is ready. I know he played OK the other week but we need to play the likes of Gray and Musa ahead of him if we are talking about advanced or creative positions. Hopefully at the start of next season Chilwell will be ready to take over from Fuchs as our regular left back in a largely changed defence as I have a feeling both Huth and Wes will be surplus to requirements as we try to kick on again.

murphy Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 I know, I'm an old bugger, but the principal is the same. It can work.
TheUltimateWinner Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Is this the new 'Start Okazaki in midfield'
murphy Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Shows how broken our midfield actually is. We've now had calls for Shinji, Chillwell, Fuchs and Henrnandez to fill the void
theessexfox Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Reminds me of the calls to play De Laet on the wing because he was good going forward. Dribbling from deep from full-back is an entirely different skill to receiving the ball high as a winger and beating a man, it's not his position. I'd like to see him get a run of games at left-back - Fuchs has been brilliant, but I'd like us to at least try to nurture a young talent we've produced, and he looks very promising.

desertfox2 Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Yeah let's play a youngster who has just had his best performance in a 1st team city shirt and is probably brimming with confidence out of position then slate him when it doesn't work out. Great plan. Even beats playing Okazaki in CM. Why not put Kasper on the wing as he looks like he might be able to cross well while we are at it??

Just because you've managed to think of two examples where it has worked doesn't out weigh the numerous it is attempted and doesn't work at all. Besides as stated Moses is hardly playing out of position, you don't often get a player who is a out and out "wing back" there either full backs or wingers being asked to do a slightly adjusted job, depending on which type of player you pick donates how much defending/attacking you will get out of them. Where are your examples where it hasn't worked then? I came up with two names and there are loads more. Moses was a winger/forward so playing at wing back with key defensive duties is a change in position.

If you can't think of numerous occasions where players playing out of position hasn't worked you don't watch a lot of football. If you are trying to troll me into wasting my time typing an essay try harder. To keep it simple every player who played on the left wing for England for about a sodding decade.
foxile5 Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Do people think that players select and practice for a particular role for no ****ing reason? This is football manager thinking.
Buzzell Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 People really comparing Chilwell to Gareth ****ing Bale?
HoustonFox Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 If anything, I'm reading this post as more of a "drop Albrighton" than anything else!
ozvaldo Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 When all are fit / available... Kasper Hernandez Huth Fuchs Albrighton Mendy Drinky Chilwell Mahrez Vardy Gray
Guest Col city fan Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 I remember when we played Bomb scare in central midfield.... Was it under Sven? Utter disaster!
LAprice_ Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Chilwell looked great going forward but he was lucky to have Amartey covering all the time.

I can remember several just for Leicester, vardy has always been an atrocious winger, waghorn made him look like giggs in his prime when he played there though. Kisnorbo was always a disgrace in holding midfield. Hammond on wing dreadful, although tbf he was always awful regardless, Sheehan was dire as a winger as he had no ability to beat a man.
