Monk Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Yes because square pegs in round holes has always worked so well for us... right?
Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Back in the old days it worked well, Paul Ramsey a midfielder playing RB, Ian Wilson a midfielder playing LB, Kevin Macdonald a midfielder playing CB, Bobby Smith a midfielder playing LB (as well) we had no midfield but they were all great in defence, what relevance this has to anything I don't know, Coronation Streets on so I'm bored. oh yes and who can forget Ormondroyd.galloping down the left wing, those were the days.
Guest Col city fan Posted 30 December 2016 Posted 30 December 2016 Playing Beckford as a striker was one of the worst ones...

Kisnorbo was always a disgrace in holding midfield. Hammond on wing dreadful, although tbf he was always awful regardless, Sheehan was dire as a winger as he had no ability to beat a man. I remember Megson playing fryatt on the wing
Sly Posted 31 December 2016 Posted 31 December 2016 Playing Vardy on the left wing helped didn't it. You've all slated Managers that have done that. How about when Kisnorbo moved into centre midfield? Psychologically, football is a different game. Players are trained to play in an established position. Unless you play at a fancy club like Ajax

If you can't think of numerous occasions where players playing out of position hasn't worked you don't watch a lot of football. If you are trying to troll me into wasting my time typing an essay try harder. To keep it simple every player who played on the left wing for England for about a sodding decade. Were you at the game? Chilwell did well when he played on the left wing in front of Fuchs eh? Seems Ranieri is as clueless as me then.

Even if you take a twenty minute showing as evidence that chilwell in midfield works (which is a bad idea - even Elvis Hammond had the occasional good game) that hardly tips the scales against Vardy on the wing for England, putting waghorn on the wing for us in his second spell, kisnorbo at cm, sol bamba at cm, holloways midfield of right backs and strikers in one away game (feeling it might have been blackpool) etc. Manwell is still right - players out of position usually is a bad idea.
SheppyFox Posted 31 December 2016 Posted 31 December 2016 What I can't understand is how 4 ft 3" chilwell wins more aerial battles than 6ft+ players
StriderHiryu Posted 31 December 2016 Posted 31 December 2016 He's been fabulous in his last two games. If you compare his performances against Chelsea (EFL cup) and Porto, he's raised his game to another level in a short space of time. I always defend Amartey for being 21 and playing in one of the toughest leagues in the world. Well today this lad went up against Dimitri Payet and ended up on the winning side. I was just willing him to score near the end, which would have been richly deserved. Very exciting to see his development and it gives us a real conundrum to solve because Fuchs is a very consistent performer and fan favorite too. Not only has this kid got potential, but on the basis of these last two performances, he could be a regular left-back in the PL. He looked absolutely shattered at the end of the game, so can see Fuchs coming back in, but I now can see why this kid has been hyped up. Solid both defensively and offensively in his two games so far and some of his combination play with Gray was tasty. With Mahrez off to AFCON perhaps we can experiment with that some more, or play Fuchs / Chilwell together and put Gray on the right ahead of Albrighton? Whatever happens, I feel like this is an unexpected bonus and real reason to be excited for the new year.

You better tell Ranieri then mate. Tell him to contact Manwell and ban Chilwell from playing on the wing despite him doing a good job and clearly having some ability going forward. Btw I totally agree that Vardy is not a winger. I would never play him in the position.

I didn't say we shouldn't try it again, but you cannot judge someone on twenty minutes worth of football, and arguing that you not only can, but that it is the rule rather than an exception for players playing out of position, is absurd.
sdb Posted 31 December 2016 Posted 31 December 2016 Excellent showing and adapted to left mid really well. Big ask that but he took it in his stride.

Ian Wilson is a great example, in fact for me, he became more associated with his slot at FB during his time at City (and scoring against Fulham). Reverted to MF again when we flogged him to Everton. Bobby Smith "worked well" as a LB??? Not sure about that. Still astonishes me that Liverpool came in for MacDonald, sound bloke though - and actually acted as joint caretaker manager for a couple of games as I recall. "oh yes and who can forget Ormondroyd galloping down the left wing" Thankfully one of my less frequently summoned memories and recollections of Filbo.

sm1 Posted 31 December 2016 Posted 31 December 2016 I don't think its a major change for him because he likes bombing forward so much. In fact I think he's better going forward then defending (although last 2 games he's been excellent). Personally I think with him and Albrighton, we have two natural wing backs. Would love CR to try 343 in the cup.
