If we go down it's because of the defence. Low quality both on the ball and positioning.

Kasper = quality and bemused (odd one out)

Simpson = shocking

Morgan = long ball and poor

Huth = long ball and v poor

Fuchs = poor, off his game

Chilwell = poor only just about the best of a bad bunch.

either it's confidence or more likely we need major surgery at the back and fast.

The middle / up top looks like Premiership, but its misfiring, literally.  However the "Defence" is shocking and that sets all our tempo, back to front.....poor passes, long balls that just come back at us...

Sort out the Defence!

Wes and huth  are finished. How hard can it be to actually find a centre half who is comfortable on the ball.  Even kisnorbo could pass it forward.

Backed ourselves into a hole with these contracts. Who on Earth thought of giving Fuchs and Simpson three more years? Sack him. Morgan I can understand but not those two.

Text a mate tonight and we agreed, bottom Championship defence ATM.

The whole momentum of the team is reliant on a solid successful passing defence. What we've got is misfiring, long balls and crap positioning.

going down with the defence like this.

Huth was awful tonight, absolutely shocking display

He must be the slowest player in the prem and the worse with the ball at is feet then Morgan second worse

The players infront of the defence aren't working hard enough, we need to start defending as a team like we did last season:

I get your point, but in general overall play, the back 4 are playing badly. Huth almost shot now, Morgan not far behind. Simpson now showing his normal level (QPR 3 seasons ago).

Last year Kante protected us from the inevitable happening sooner.

I actually thought Morgan did okay tonight, he's not Franz Beckenbauer but he played a few decent passes out of defence whereas Huth just seemed to hack it away and / or spoon it up in the air every single time. At least Wes looks up even if he lacks accuracy. I was watching him really closely and Huthy doesn't even look up, he just smashes it forward.

I don't think we should be getting rid of either of them, they just shouldn't be playing alongside each other. We need one in the side to do the dirty stuff alongside a quicker, ball-playing CB with the other on the bench.

I actually feel a little for Huth, don't think he is the problem at all. I feel the back line starts with Simpson and Morgan getting dragged all over the place and Huth tries to play his game,  and looks worse when others arnt doing what they should.

Great goal tonight Wes, and will always be remembered as our Premier League winning captain but I feel if we replaced him with Keane, and replaced Simpson with anyone who can play positionally, control and pass a ball then we would be 100% more solid.

We shouldn't just dwell on the 2 centres halfs. I thought Simpson was close to the worst of the lot. Terrible distribution generally, poor positioning and offers 0 "zero" zip, nowt going forward, plus his share of long balls.

F**k me, that's a reference! :D

Gotta feel sorry for Kasper right now, he has developed into a quality keeper but he is getting very little help in front of him.

Simpson is shocking at the moment, got a medal and a ton of cash and not bothered any more. His lack of anything drags Morgan out into all the wrong places trying to cover for Simpson, and exposes Morgan's lack of pace, which in turn exposes Huth. Simpson needs to go.

I like Morgan as a bloke, but he is not a premier league quality centre half. It was the arrival of Huth that saved Morgan's career at City. Morgan sadly needs to go.

Huth is still a decent centre half but does need someone with a bit of pace alongside him now, and who has better positional awareness than Morgan. I would actually put Was in Morgan right now, because we don't have anyone else who is ready. Amartey is not ready to play centre back in the premier league, yet.

Fuchs is okay, and so is Chilwell, who is pushing Fuchs really hard now for a starting birth. It is a toss up between these two who starts now. The trouble for any left back right now, is that when Simpson goes missing everything gets dragged out of shape and across the field, leaving too much room for the left back to cover.

Even so, with the back four we have got, they would still be okay with Kante just sitting in front of them. Neither Amartey or Ndidi are ready to fill those boots yet. We are asking a lot of two young boys to try and do that. Let's face it Kante is a rare breed, there are not many players like him in the world never mind the premier league. Drinky is suffering as a result, not through lack of effort (drop Morgan and make him captain) but he is trying to hold on to midfield on his own. Somebody though needs to just sit in front of that back four and I fear right now Drinky is the only one with a hope of doing it, but it is a waste of a top player.

The trouble now is we can only work with what we have got. We missed the boat in the summer. We paid money for players from abroad and we all know they need a season to settle before you see whether they will make it here at all. We should have spent our dough on guys who know the division and maybe still had a point to prove. Pulis is doing this rather well at the Baggies and it really hurts to say that.

On a different point, the way we have treated Ulloa is poor, the guy didn't grumble last season when warming he bench, put in a shift when asked and scored some vital goals. Slimani arrives, and I am not sure he has the appetite for the physicality of the premier (I hope he proves me wrong) and we shove Ulloa to one side, no wonder he wants out.

This also pains me, Shearer was right last night, we need to pull our socks up and do the basics, chase, hassle, and get stuck in again, cause if we are not doing that, we are not good enough to consider ourselves a cultured passing kind of football team.

Fingers crossed for the rest of the season, never dull being a City fan is it !!!!!!

We've brought this all on ourselves. Going into a season with Huth and Morgan at centre half. Criminal.

Last night they both looked so poor. I assume we won't be getting a new centre half in either so we're stuck with the same.

We had to go into the season with them playing. Where we really fell down was signing no back up for ageing players (a point made by many repeatedly on here, you included) I think they deserved to start the season but if we'd had back up both would surely have been dropped by now. That we don't have that luxury is truly criminal. Not signing any defenders in the window, given what we've all witnessed, will only compound the criminality.

Tbf Wes was good for the first few months of the great escape season, and obviously those last nine games and last season. When he's confident and fit he's fine, but he's obviously miles away from either at the moment. Needs to be rested for his own good

Goof thoughtful post mate.  I agree with most of what you're saying, its about the small things Shearer was saying, the basics.

That said I stand by my overall concern: Championship defense with mid-table midfield/attack in front.  This is the area we've hugely underachieved this season.  Yes other areas clearly haven't clicked , but how can you go from that really solid faze last 15 games last season, to being so vulnerable at the back this?

Personally, I'd like to see Amartey given a go at CB, since hes can play there, pretty quick and can tackle and would have to pass the ball forward too

Gonna do my best of @Col city fan now: I've been saying this for weeks...

Love ya Col!

Our absolute inabilty to clear the ball and perform the basics has absolutely cost us season.  Last night is a prime example - two balls that should have been easily cleared led to Derby's goals.  Simpson has been a huge culprit of this for a while now, just that last season, luck was on our side. Stop heading it back into the middle FFS.  No idea why he (and Wes) do that, but then they put non-threatening balls out for pointless corners.

Huth was dropped from Stoke as they thought he was over the hill. He gets loaned to us and we got him for 3m and he helped us stay up. He then wins the title the following season. He hasnt lost any pace because he never had any. He along with the rest of the defence have been made to look below average because Kante is no longer there to screen for them and nick the ball away and block attempts. Weso to me looks like a man needing a break. He has played so many major tourneys in recent times and been shunted around the world as club captain after our prem win that he must be shagged. Because of Kante going and not replaceable IMO, we need to shift our style and look for someone with a bit more pace to play alongside one of them and have the other ready from the substitutes bench.

Simpson defends well but just cant contribute going forward and his distribution is shocking along with Wes and Huth. Fuchs again is decent and we need to utilise his left foot more.

We need a new centre back and maybe we can unearth a young fullback from somewhere to go with the other younger lads we have signed in the last 12-18 months.

Sakho on loan from Liverpool with a view to a permanent deal would be good for starters!

Defending starts further up the pitch. Or it should do. The back four look poor but we're just not closing down or even attempting to get stuck in for most of the games. It should start at the top but Vardy, who last season ran and ran and chased and harried simply isn't doing it and not one other front player looks capable of doing so either.

Our midfield just isn't up to the task.

Until we start competing as a team all over the pitch we're going to continue to struggle.
