You've done more crying than anyone else.

How exactly? Im not the one complaining about 'innocent' fans getting a beating.

Oh, and it would appear we have each commented on this thread 7 times. That would make your theory of me crying more than anyone else about as accurate as your fake news kids football being taken and baton round head comments...but hey..:P

Spain was a police state not long ago, the police act like it still is. Portugal was great, everyone congregated by the river, singing songs, booting footballs, the police stood and observed, that is how you police large crowds, you don't wade it without thought.

Scum

Portugal also had a police state at same time as Spain.

You can read about Salazar (dictator) or 'revolução de 25 de Abril' (25th of April revolution) - a peaceful ending of the dictatorship made by the army.

In Spain was Franco, in Portugal was Salazar. Both at same time.

But portuguese people are more friendly and peaceful people than spanish.
:)

Also, Portuguese police and spotters that follow fans of foreign football teams still have the experience of Euro 2004 that was in several cities of Portugal.
So they know better how to keep things more peaceful and nice for football fans.

Good luck with Atlético.
I hope Leicester City FC win both games
:)

Why can't English fans just accept that our culture is quite different from that of most other countries? Attitudes towards every aspect of what our fans get up to in a couple of days differ considerably in most continental countries - drinking, behaviour in public, policing, singing - you name it, they do it differently. We need to respect local culture. If some of our fans got an undeserved kicking from the Spanish police then that's just too bad.

I'm know I will feel differently at 7.45 tonight but right now part of me hopes we go out of this competition soon so we don't get any more situations like this.

" There is more of a menace about the Spanish police, who parked their black vans in a row on one side of the square and keep a close eye on the visitors.

At one stage a football is kicked into the square and four of the officers advanced just as some children launched into spontaneous kickabout, which is short lived as the offending ball is quickly confiscated."

Fake news yeah?

Ah, yeah sorry. Thats the same Leicester Mercury that posted the video of innocent fans being arrested yet the video clearly shows bottles being thrown...

This isn't just a problem unique to English fans though, fans from throughout Europe get this treatment from the Spanish police. There's a difference between "respecting local culture" and having to spend an entire trip living in fear of a kicking from the local bill if you don't spend it all sat quietly minding your own business - which, by the way, doesn't seem from the anecdotal evidence I've seen and heard to be much of a guaranteed way of saving yourself from a shoeing anyway.

As for hoping we go out because of this - pull yourself together FFS.

All this "just leave the area, it's common sense" is all well and good to say sat behind a keyboard in Blaby or wherever, but does it not strike people that perhaps the cops *might* just be looking for people doing just that as they're a) an easy target b) walking away from something can easily be trumped up to being a sign of guilt in the cops' eyes?

As has been said before, some incredible naivety being shown on here. Should people exercise common sense abroad? Obviously. Is it always that simple a solution? Course it fvcking isn't.

Correct. There's a video of one of our fans being arrested down a side street for absolutely no reason according to a journalist.

What makes the Madrid events particularly interesting - and that's my theory - is a political component. I'm sure the heavy-handed police forces target English fans as a consequence of the Gibraltar question. Making a statement, so to speak.

Really?!

I'd say the issue certainly adds to it. It's not like Spain haven't done their best to interfere with customs control going to/from Gibraltar in the past...

I know they've been a pain in the arse over Gibraltar, but even I wouldn't accuse them of being heavy handed with Leicester fans just because of that.

Am I the only one who thought of pirates of the Caribbean when they saw the name "Salazar"?

lol

Salazar is a name that came from spanish but it is also used in Portugal as family name/surname.

But right now it's not a 'welcome' name..

Spanish were the first to find and occupy the Caribbean.

Portugal and Spain were the first countries to find and occupy 'Americas' but Portuguese only stayed in south [Brazil], spanish occupied the rest of south america and central america and the caribbean.

So some spanish [and portuguese] names are connected or associated with the Caribbean - or Mexico for [north] americans.

It just happens to be Leicester fans as the sole English representatives. I don't see it having anything to do with "being Leicester", it's "being English".

I can't recall similar incidents when Eindhoven, Bayern or Rostov fans were in town during the group stage matches - although some of the Dutch had a bit of a nasty streak, mocking beggars in Madrid:

In fact, Bayer Leverkusen fans could do as they pleased:

It might be worth some of you reading Spanish reports of the incident. It's also worth pointing out that desordenar (disorder) translates to mess, in English. Though i can't fins a Spanish quote that says 'for causing a mess'.

http://deportes.elpais.com/deportes/2017/04/12/actualidad/1491949697_081027.html

For those that can't be bothered, and want to blame the heavy-handedness of the Spanish police, the article in El Pais states that the vast majority of the fans were well-behaved, and socialised amicably with locals throughout the day. As the night drew to a close, 50 Leicester fans refused to be moved on, sparking the arrests and trouble.

Would you really get THAT upset over someone sticking a Spanish flag sticker on you?

Do those "kick me" and "Onion nob" post it notes still hurt today from school?

Even if you do I don't think a police beating is fair game.

I think it just demonstrates the moronic mentality of our fan base out there though which probably explains the current situation. Sticking football flags on the back of a pensioner? Class.

Stickers.

Just how much of a tool do you have to be to buy them, graffiti places with them or have any time for the moronic wording that they often readily promote. Stickers - cool when you were eleven years old, a marker of deep stupidity thereafter.
