Trouble in Madrid

I'm not suggesting otherwise, I'm just putting cited examples out there for balance, that's all.

Yeah, fair enough. I live in Spain (albeit, not Madrid), so perhaps have a slightly different perspective to the perceived (sometimes justified) rep of our English fans.

I don't hugely agree with people saying that the police here have problems with English fans in particular. They just hate disruption of the peace in general. I've lived here long enough to know that when ever there is any risk of things getting out of hand, or when ever someone attempts to do something to the police such as throwing a can of beer at them... they just escalate. None of the soft hand policing, none of the messing around.

In addition I think it is almost general knowledge that the police in Spain don't f-ck around. You need only look at how they brutalised people during the austerity protests. Even old people who had nothing to do with it. Long story short, keep your distance and do as they say. Gtfo if you sense trouble coming. They have no interest in your banter, but will gladly give you their version of banter which comes in the form of smashing people with sticks.

Just seen a video of fans in the square giving a rendition of 10 German Bombers, don't really get the relevance/point singing that when they're in Spain following Leicester but each to their own....

Watched Holland v Lithuania and there were Millwall fans there singing the above. They were also verbally abusive and physically threatening towards women and children around them. Some of our supporters are such dumb fuchs.

Yeah, I agree with you in a way. But if the PN or GC are as twitchy as the reports in this thread and the UK media, it's pretty much nailed on they're gonna respond to any hint of trouble accordingly. And it's no surprise that the pissed-up contingent lead to the trouble. Please understand (shit, I sound like Nintendo) I don't necessarily condone the police behaviour, but you know..

It's a shame cos it was only an hour or so until the escort to the ground - nearly made it but now that potential highlight of the day my not happen

Always the way in stuff like this though that a few idiots ruin it for everyone else. hope you guys win tonight (or at least get an away goal), and hope you have a good match!

Difference in our case is the vast amounts travelling without tickets, doesn't happen very often unless it's for finals etc. Spanish police not keen on big crowds it seems and they only know force as a way of dispersing people but all that does is escalate the situation.

I'm torn on this really, when I see dickheads singing 10 German bombers I'm delighted I'm not there but equally when I see a photo on Twitter of an older Leicester fan wearing a replica shirt covered in blood from the massive gash on his head I struggle to see how people can just sit on here saying "you get what you deserve".

Yep. The situation really is not as black and white as some might say. As bovril made the point earlier on, it's possible to feel contempt for the morons out there looking to start something while feeling sympathy for the folks who just want to take in the atmosphere and watch the football getting caught in the crossfire, as well as feeling satisfied the Spanish plod are bringing the long handle for the fvckwits that are starting stuff while being pissed off that they're also being indiscriminate enough for decent folks to get caught up in it all.

Been in the square for some of the afternoon,

Over the top police presence which was waiting for any hint of trouble. However, it saddens me to say that a couple of smoke bombs and then a few idiots throw things at the police which provoked the reaction.

They had said they would not put up with any trouble and clearly they waded in heavily irrespective of age, gender or whether you were looking for trouble.

Most St sensible people promptly left the square which we did. Sadly a few idiots always spoil it for the greater good!!

Indeed, I didn't say that (and you didn't say I did to be fair). The fact is the idiot actions of a few affect everyone, was always this way. It's a shame. As I mentioned earlier the article in El Pais specifically says the majority of the fans were great.

Yeah, in the last 5 mins I've seen videos of cans thrown at Police but then reports of a city fan in a wheelchair getting hit by them as well. The horse has bolted now, it will be like this all night.

Agree, but the police need to identify the dickheads, and deal with them, but they attack peaceful fans at the same time.

Just seen a disturbing picture of an old man, clearly not there for trouble, bleeding quite badly from his head.

All the leicester fans are not innocent, but the police are attacking the innocent.

You're right, of course, but maybe they're attacking those not doing as they are told? Maybe they work for United Airlines at weekends?
