Foxes won't turn into giant panderers to talk Riyad Mahrez out of summer transfer, says Leicester's Craig Shakespeare

Craig Shakespeare says Leicester will not “pander” to the whims of their star players – amid fears of an exodus of big names this summer.

Riyad Mahrez has admitted he wanted to leave the Foxes in the wake of last season’s extraordinary title triumph, while other key men could be ready to quit the club when the transfer window opens.

Their failure to secure European football for next season after their brilliant run to the Champions League quarter-finals could see the likes of Mahrez and star striker Jamie Vardy move on, if the right offers are made.

But Leicester boss Shakespeare said Leicester will not be pander to their top players, despite assuring Mahrez and co that they are valued by all at the club.

“We don’t need to pander to everybody’s needs, but they need to know they are wanted at a football club and appreciated,” he said, after Saturday's 2-1 loss away to Manchester City.

“Riyad is one of many who, if you ask him, feels appreciated and wanted here — not only by the coaching staff and the owners and the fans, but by the players as well.

“I think most of our players are under contract. There’s always going to be speculation because they’re good players. But until you get an offer, it’s speculation. You don’t have a decision to make unless you get an offer, and we haven’t had an offer for any one of our players.

the star players don't run the football team or the club and if they want to leave that is their choice, the club give them a good wage and give them a platform to perform on and they are adored here but if they think they can get more personal success away from the club that is their decision. we have pandered to these players enough and they should be professional on and off the pitch . at the end of the day the club comes first and what is best for the club.

Its all a balancing act and I'm sure that having worked under some good managers Shakey will pick out all their 'good bits' and do the right thing.   Recruitment and man management is key.   If someone absolutely has their heart set on leaving then best to let them go so as not to destabilise the rest of the team.

Shakey is stating the obvious here but probably marking thePlayers cards at the same time that he expects them to honor their Contracts.                                 Unfortunately, as we know, Players are tapped up through Agents all the time. Very often the Owning Club is the last to know that a player is leaving.

Depends on the situation. Letting someone leave might not be in our best interests and if a disagreement degenerated into a destabilising or even a breach of contract issue,  then the last thing I'd want is let the player get away with that.

I'd accept anyone disagreeing with me civilly - preferably in private if they've something important to say - but anyone not giving their best as a player or through their attitude to the group , would leave a much deeper mark and one I'd hope they'd come to regret.
