Luganos Ezgjan Alioski - The discovery of the season

Ezgjan Alioski of FC Lugano is in the spotlight in this Super League season. The Macedonian national team shoots many goals - and is different than expected. In the summer he will probably go.

Who is Ezgjan Alioski? He must be an eccentric. Platinum blond dyed hair, glued with gel to the head - a showman with white-yellow helmet. One who celebrates goals with rehearsed cheer, one who plays with the fans.

Who is Ezgjan Alioski? Maybe nothing of all this. He is in the stadium bistro of FC Lugano; On the head a black baseball cap, blond fringes fall out. "On the square it's like on a stage," he says with earnest eyes and melancholy eyes. Alioski, 25, is the discovery of the Super League season. He has scored 15 goals for Lugano, as well as 11 assists - they are the best values in the league. His rise comes unexpectedly, everything starts well over a year ago.

Zeman did not understand

It will take place in the Cup semi-final against FC Luzern. Alioski has moved to Ticino from the Challenge League club FC Schaffhausen weeks ago, and he has been a defending champion. Once he hears the coach Zdenek Zeman, this Alioski, that is no defenders. He does not think of anything. Up to this cup semi-final: Zeman murmurs something, Alioski is ready for the substitution. "I hardly understood him, I could hardly speak Italian at the time," says Alioski. Zeman sends him in the right midfield. "And I felt that everyone who knew me was looking at me and thinking, 'What is the defender doing now?' '

Alioski convinces. He has always been fast, tricky, an offensive with a offensive, a street footballer. From then on he is a winger. It starts a new lifestyle, so it calls Alioski. Whoever shoots goals gets attention, recognition. Things that have been wanting him.

When Alioski is one-year-old, the family comes from Macedonia to Switzerland. The father works first in Rheinfelden in a horse stable, later finds work in Freiburg, with the wife and the two sons he lives in Flamatt, a small village on the border with Bern. "The family always had to fight for recognition", says Maurizio Jacobacci, Alioski's coach in Schaffhausen. Alioski had this in mind.

The Alioski family belongs to the Albanian minority in Macedonia, they speak Albanian at home, while in the holidays they travel to their parents' homes. Alioski once said in an interview: "You are a foreigner here, and you are a foreigner here, you do not know what is right" -he said it in broad Berndeutsch. Since the U 17 he has played for the Macedonian national team. He scored his first international goal against Albania last September. The negative reactions come promptly. Like a Swiss national player with Albanian roots meets Albania - only more violently. The political situation between the neighboring countries is complicated, the game is emotionally charged.

Just train, do not play

At the age of ten, Alioski joins the Young Boys and runs through all junior levels. Under Christian Gross, he can train with the first team but not play. It was difficult at that time for the boys: over 30 players in the squad, a coach succeeded. Alioski feels unfairly treated by the Berners. He still smells that he was underestimated. They told him it was not enough for the professional football - Alioski does not believe the YB person responsible.

He can be lent to Schaffhausen and meet the coach Jacobacci. "He was willing, wanted to learn, he wanted to be a professional," he says. A year later again the disappointment: Although the contract with YB out, but a definite change to Schaffhausen smashes, as well as the second team of VfB Stuttgart. In summer 2013 Alioski is unemployed. He has no contract, only a training in the retail trade and his ambitions. The father supports him financially, he never said: Go work! Like the son, he is a footballer, he is a referee for 15 years. Two months Alioski refers to unemployment benefits; He's home for two months, "you have nothing to do, so you go out to train." Alone on the Flamatter football field, the hope in the back head, but also the disappointment.

Alioski knows a few exercises from the YB-training, he repeats them again and again. "You're all alone, you have to work out yourself: it can work or not work." It works.

Two months later Jacobacci needs an outside defender, Schaffhausen finds a solution with YB, Alioski is again a football profi. It could have been a happy ending - and is only the beginning: because of Dino Lamberti. The well-known advisor represents Jacobacci, who makes him aware of Alioski. In the winter of 2016, Lamberti allows his protege a loan to Lugano. Lamberti has a lot of influence in the Ticino, he represents several performers and the trainer Paolo Tramezzani. In the summer, Lugano Alioski obligates itself free of charge. FC Sion also wants him. But Alioski does not go to Valais. He is unlikely to stay in Ticino even during the summer. FC Lugano needs money, Alioski is ambitious: "I want to play in a big club," he says. Hertha Berlin should be interested.

A showman with a white yellow helmet?

Not sure he would pass a medical.

He would surely pass the first three medicals, but probably not the fourth.

Hell of a cross on him.

Otherwise hard to tell playing against such bobbins defence.

Could be brilliant, could be garbage. Exactly the sort of player we probably have scouted though.

Definitely has the most impressive Youtube video out of everyone we've been linked with so far

Very impressive. A man who looks strong, clever, who can shift, can shoot and can flight the ball. Yes please.

Has the look of a sub standard Bond villain... and dare I saw, looks to be carrying a little Christmas weight?

Misleading. He's fit as a fiddle - the stocky appearance doesn't do him justice. You could say the same about Shaqiri, it's just because their relatively small size (Alioski is 5'6'', Shaqiri just slightly smaller) makes the proportions look a bit odd.

What about the Bond villain bit? Does he secretly drown kittens in his spare time?

No, but I heard he keeps his own swimming pool full of cute piranhas.

Ahhhh. Has he managed to attach the laser beams to them yet?

He allegedly has a high number of assistants disappearing without a trace already, so you could be onto something here...
