Mid-sized club mired in a relegation battle in a terrible run of form; we were unlikely to sign a first-choice.

lol what am I reading? Champions of England playing in the champions league yet can't sign any better than a 4th choice CB from a poor Italian team?

Alright Rudkin, back to playing Solitaire.

Champions of England meant nothing in January.  We looked certainties for relegation.  That was the reality.

He was on the pitch for 70 minutes, didn’t look shit and he certainly looked like he was at least making an effort which is a lot more than I can say for some other players on that day.

And it was his first ever game for us. Not saying he’s the answer to any questions but at least he’s familiar with us. Why doesn’t he deserve a chance if we can get him on the cheap?

Because we've got Morgan, Huth and Benalouane already for backup. I think last season proved we need an improvement in our current defenders.

A defender who hasn't been a regular for years and being fourth choice at a Serie A out fit isn't an improvement IMO. Wague would certainly add depth but that's it.

Molla Wague wasn't good enough to get into the team that finished bottom 17th, 16th, and bottom of La Liga from when he made his move from Ligue 2. He has played 0 games for his parent club. On loan at a perennial Serie A struggler, he was not a starter but 3rd choice at best. We cancelled his loan at Udinese to come to us. Why? Because supposedly Steve Walsh wrote his name down in his little black book some time? People want to sign him because he looked decent against a League one side that managed to beat us with 10 men? What the **** is wrong with you guys?

I hope that signing him was to send a message to someone to show how screwed our transfers were. There was talk out of Malaga when we sold Hernandez that it was an over complicated transaction. We bought Kapustka without looking at him in person. Our transfer's were a mess last season. Yet some people want to hold onto and draw names out of Steve Walsh's little black book like it's the best chance we have. It isn't. Let it go. Forget Steve Walsh. He can't help us sign players anymore. We need to find a new Guru.

Certainties for relegation? Bit of a leap there buddy, don't think we finished a round of games in the bottom 3 all season did we?

Because that wasn't the first time he dislocated his shoulder. These things have a nasty habit of recurring... can't have him out for a season every time he falls a bit wrong

Of course if the staff determine he is too injury prone, don't bother. Or if Shakey just doesn't like him obviously there's no point. But if we can get him cheap, with no expectations of being a starter, maybe he could be a useful backup. We saw at the tail end of last season how easy it is to be short at CB. Let the guy be a cup regular and see what he can do. At least in the 70 minutes we saw of him he put himself about.

My bad.  I could have sworn we were in the bottom three at the beginning of Shakespeare's first game in charge.

Liverpool home was a Monday night so we'd dropped into the bottom 3 before that game.

This loan sums up how poorly organised and planned last season was!

We had a once in a life time opportunity to move the club onto another level.

We blew it, think small time, act small time, you'll be small time.

We genuinely were looking at him a few years back.

I can only imagine we got so far down the shortlist that he was the best option available. Probably about 10th choice lol

Champions of England sign fourth choice Serie A centre back?

We won the league with a team of players nobody else wanted

We were plummeting and most of us on here felt the only way at that time was down and out. So let's not be revisionist.

Revisionist is suggesting we all felt we were 100% going down.

I think a fair few of us were expecting Claudio to turn it around. And how could you not considering the amount of games remaining at the time and his proven ability as manager.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that we would have picked up enough points to stay up, regardless of whether the players were putting in 100% or not.

The ray of hope I thought was that on the sidelines he was actively telling the players to keep it on the deck showing that our horrid performances weren't 100% his fault, they were playing like twats. He also said after Millwall it's time for drastic changes which would have sidelined underperformers, although admittedly he bottled the changes for the Sevilla game, or he didn't trust the second choice players for a game of that magnitude.

I think it's just a bit unfair to say we were definitely going down with Claudio. It does a disservice to the bloke who helped bring us something great, it's disrespectful, it defies his ability and it absolves all blame of everyone else for our predicament.

It is not a disservice or disrespectful whatsoever. Does my post mention Claudio personally or absolve anyone else of blame? I didn't. You are extrapolating incorrectly from what I said. However, many on here felt by the time of the Millwall game we were doomed in the way we were playing and the lack of results whilst others around were picking up their form and points. So the post I responded to, which suggested we were fine essentially, was not right.

To be fair most on here think we are doomed because we haven't signed Messi by the first of July.

And the original post didn't suggest we were fine, it suggested in a tight season at the bottom we were far from certainties for relegation, as we had not completed a full round of games in the bottom 3 all season.

Fair comment re. your post in one respect. You didn't say we were fine, but you were wrong in that we had dropped into the bottom three before the Liverpool game having lost our last five league games. And most on here, rightly in my view, felt we were doomed and with good reason in light of the play and results.

I think fans want to see some reasonable signings to strengthen in view of the pre-season failures last year when champions. No-one is expecting Messi. FWIW, I think we will be ok with another couple of good players coming in.

Surely the issue is that of ambition.  If we want to be topsix we have to bring in players with that quality.  To be clear we already have some. ..  but we need more.

Players who cannot help with that are diversions
