As soon as we wobbled ever so slightly he was exposed for what he is, an absolute fraud stealing a living. I'm pretty patient with most of our signings, I'd defend the likes of Mendy and Slimani still as I don't think we've seen enough yet. But Benny is a straight up liability. Benny was a god against Atletico away, our best player by a mile. He just makes some really, really ****ing dumb decisions and until he can be trusted to perform consistently he's not going to be good enough. In the ideal world we sign someone who is comfortable on the left, young and with some pace. Maybe Gibson fits that profile but I think I would have preferred Ake.

MPH Posted 6 July 2017 Author Posted 6 July 2017 I dont understand why some people seem to think someone is either top class or terrible. To me, there is often many who fall into the middle of that - and that can cover many categories which include good, good but inconsistent, average good but injury [rone. not match fit. to name but a few

Fox in the North Posted 6 July 2017 Posted 6 July 2017 The man's had his first proper summer off in 2 years. He's played more or less every league game for the past 4 years and had post season tournaments with Jamaica in the Americas for the past 2 years. I'm not surprised if things are starting to hurt a little more and a little longer. Fingers crossed he keeps going though, the man's been legendary. Extra defensive cover should help him rotate and stay fresh.

He had a couple of awful games - Everton away and Spurs at home. In most of the others he was easily our best defender. Not really sure what player other people are watching, but it's not Benny. I don't know how you can not rate a player who's commanding in a tackle and brings the ball out calmly. I think you need to watch some re-runs of the last 3rd of last season.
Nod.E Posted 6 July 2017 Posted 6 July 2017 This will sound pretty elitist but I'm going to put it out there anyway. The difference of opinion on Benny isn't really an opinion. It's literally a case of whether you know the game or not. If you don't, you can take him on face value. He doesn't do much glaringly wrong. He's good on the ball and in the tackle. If however you know football (and I mean really know it; play it, breathe it, live it) then you see the subtlety that is his complete inability to make the correct positional decisions consistently enough to ever be regarded a first choice top flight centre half.

Who the **** are you, Alex Ferguson? ?
Buzzell Posted 6 July 2017 Posted 6 July 2017 Benny did a very decent job when needed. Wouldn't say he's awful, is a bit of a loose cannon but is a decent squad player to have. Obviously we need to strengthen up the defence though.

When, one day, we have a "Top 20 favourite Noddy posts" thread ... This little beauty will probably be in the top 3.

I'd be very surprised if we just cast him aside completely... thats not usually what people do with their title-winning captain... they are often phased out.. But does anyone know how he's doing? still struggling with injury? Or get phased out to villa.... The knackers yard of football?

Lambert09 Posted 7 July 2017 Posted 7 July 2017 Benny is brilliant for 90% of a game, but in the other 10% he forgets he's a footballer, karate kicks and chases butterflies

Very well said - if you look at his body shape when heading he allows an opposition player to climb above him. A good example of positional sense was Millwall away - he was totally out of position, the channel between him and Chilwell upguarded...alas a late winner.
Wdywd Posted 7 July 2017 Posted 7 July 2017 Wouldn't really blame him for the Spurs incident either since it was basically just a back 1 with him and 9 strikers. He did what we needed him to do last season basically. Our defensive cover apart from him was Was and a one armed phantom on loan from Udinese reserves. We needed someone to come in and get us through without Morgan. I love Was obviously but imagine the utter carnage our defence would've been with him playing every game
Countryfox Posted 7 July 2017 Posted 7 July 2017 Bottom line if we can get Gibson, (or a.n.other), then we will be sorted and the Benny issue will not be an issue.

No, no, that's not "elitist" at all. Patronising and vainglorious yes, but not elitist.

norwichfox Posted 10 July 2017 Posted 10 July 2017 Has Wes retired from international football? I see he wasn't in their 23 man squad for last nights game v Curacao
