Almost guaranteed top ten next year ?

Ok there is no guarantee but am struggling to see if managed correctly how we can be worse than :

The three promoted teams ... what's going on at Newcastle ? Will Rafa walk ?

West Brom ... Pulis only seems interested in buying more centre backs.

Stoke .. can't see what Hughes is trying to do there and they seem in terminal decline.

Burnley .. just sold their best player and don't seem in a hurry to reinvest.

Swansea ... likely to be losing their best player and main striker crocked.

West Ham ... seem in complete disarray and looks like we are going to get their main striker target.

Palace and Watford ... suppose these two are the unknown quantities with good young managers but will need time to get their ideas over.

Thoughts ?

With the start we have, it's not inconceivable we could find ourselves in the lower reaches of the division early on. That would build both internal and external pressure around the club making it anyone's guess where we'd be at Christmas, let alone the end of the season.

Our season will depend on what we do, not what others don't.

Fair point but still think we can nick a surprise result in the opening fixtures if we hit the ground running.

This theory could hit Stoke though within their first 8 fixtures have to face Arsenal, Everton , Man U, Man City and Chelsea !!

No.

Nothing is guaranteed in football. We could so easily go down as we could finish top ten.

But ATM my concerns are he other way, not because we were generally poor last season but towards the back end of the season and our football was horrible - if we want to improve we cannot seriously keep on playing that same long ball to Vardy.

There's a long way to go yet with every team. Not all signings are finalised for starters. BUT if we win our home games then I don't see why top ten isn't a target - Stoke finished 9th for two or three seasons running yet whenever I saw them/we played them they never impressed me.

There are some very mediocre sides in the division but take Mahrez out of our side and it probably doesn't strike mass fear into other sides either. We all know Ndidi and Vardy and a few others are class on their day, but you could say the same for Shakiri or Zaha or Benteke etc.

Actually just looked at the Bookies odds and we are overall ninth favourites to finish top ten ... pretty miserly odds though at around 5/6.

Interestingly the tenth favourites are Stoke where you can still get pretty good odds at around 9/4.... a huge gap from our odds.

I can see just about any scenario which ranges from being top 4 at Christmas or Shakey sacked by Christmas and being near the bottom of the table.

whi knows what systems he'll play and wether they will work with new personnel.

we can't just say the top ten is guaranteed, the players will have to work hard and then there is the unknown like injuries, suspensions. etc. we have the nucleus of a good squad it is about them working together as a team and players being on form and the new signings contributing a lot more than the signings last season!

Bit harsh to compare Vardy to those players, he is far more consistent. He's one of the best strikers in the league without question, Benteke isn't anywhere near. We'll see about N'didi, at his age there should be so much more to come from him. Gray likewise if we start giving him a chance.

Awful thread title but with the squad we've got, with or without Mahrez, and if we can get the transfers right (Iheanacho plus a good attacking midfielder and I'd be fairly happy) then top 10 should be the minimum target.

We were crap for most of last season and yet one more goal against Bournemouth and we would have been in the top half instead of them.

If the manager gets the tactics and selection right (a big if at this point admittedly) then we will finish in the top 10.

Ok guys on reflection the thread title isn't very good. The point I'm trying to make is with the current squads of ourselves and the other ten teams mentioned

surely top ten should be a minimum requirement

As long as the management team dont have brain fart syndrome like they did for the first half of last season there is no reason why not.

Top 10 in no particular order will be i think:

Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Spuds, Liverpool, Everton, Soton, Leicester, stoke

Relegation:

Watford, Brighton, Newcastle

Given our start it's not impossible that we could be in the relegation zone

How we react to that will be key to how we progress. Tricky!

IF we lose Schmeichel then I will be massively concerned.

Mahrez going or being in limbo is secondary to me as Kasper is the one player we cannot afford to lose IMO and I understand that there is concern internally that IF De Gea leaves then he is their prime target!!!

If we started with the current squad I think anything is possible especially if we could focus Riyad until January at least but I sense that may not be possible talking to someone at the training camp.

Agree with everything you said there, but we didn't even need one more goal against Bournemouth, we just didn't need a goal wrongly disallowed.

Never assume anything in football. Assuming The Cabbage definitely on his way and Mahrez and Kasper ikely to leave and others perhaps less so, it's hard to argue we're stronger right now as a squad than we were last season.

Some of our stalwarts are getting older and will need to be cushioned from a full Premirship season at the very least. There are "unknowns" in and around the squad and we do seem to have Matty James in the fold at the moment which, together with our two signings and the so far nebulous dream of Iheanasco coming too there are some pluses.

But we still don't have a free-kick specialist and Gylfi's shown no signs of becoming that man.

The squad is still short of Premiership standard cover in certain areas. Including goalkeeper.

Also things can change at other clubs very quickly. Every game will be hard work and we can count on nothing until its won.

Yes your spot on but although we were pretty awful for most of the first half of the season we were very good for a large part of second half - will the squad be strong enough to either improve on first half of season ?

i do not think based upon the activity and potential exits that there is any guarantee we will have a squad as good as last.

I would take the current squad now with a motivated Riyad and happy Kasper because I think we would at least get 45-50 points but take those two out and sign a Zieler calibre and we would be relegation candidates imo.

Swap Watford for Burnley or Swansea IMO.

My gut feeling for top ten as well with the exception of Stoke who I'd swap with Bournemouth ( Howe has done some good business so far )

Have not got a clue who the bottom three will be at present
