Both very useful but for me, cats are my favourite do to a few reasons. Them being Low-maintenance is by far the deal breaker. Just leave the window open for a cat if you can't look after it 24/7 and you pretty much done your job.

 

cats are in no way as loyal as dogs, But the kind of unconditional loyalty most dogs exhibit towards their owners is honestly a bit off-putting. It's one thing to have a guard-dog for your house or farm, but to have them as just "pets"? No thank you.

 

 them being able to function without needing people to look after them is just fantastic.

My dog is hilarious, way better than my kids and wife who are mostly shit. I love taking him everywhere with me, even if he can be knob at times, it’s usually funny.

Edit: must be a proper size dog that doesn’t yap. Not interested in anything with -oodle in its name.

 

Other edit: lacking a dog, would consider a trade for a football, a few tins of tuna (spring water not brine), or some VHS tapes.

Dogs can give way more back to an owner, which makes them very kid friendly. But conversely, they are incredibly dumb animals that are very needy and need a lot of looking after. 

 

If you're an adult then cats are better. They are independent and don't need much looking after. You don't need to walk them l, bath them, or trim their nails. If you have a cat flap you don't need to do anything other than put some food and water down twice a day. Cats will still come and sit on your lap and purr and let you stroke them. It's not like they never want to be near you.

The "cats are rubbish and don't like humans" narrative seems to be peddled by weird dog owners who for some reason seem a bit insecure. It reminds me a bit of the Xbox vs Playstation thing online: bizarre tribalism which causes people to die on the most inane hills. 

 

I think both are great. My family have owned a number of them. Cats, even more so than dogs IMO, have incredibly distinct personalities and it seems quite random which type you're going to get. It's true, some are aloof and don't seek out human contact at all, whilst others are incredibly affectionate and demanding of your attention.

 

Cats aren't as intelligent as dogs, but it's untrue that they can't be trained, and they certainly can react to commands and human moods / tone of voice.

 

Here's my guy Hank literally as I type this. He'll try to do this all day, and then moan if I try to move him.
