The "cats are rubbish and don't like humans" narrative seems to be peddled by weird dog owners who for some reason seem a bit insecure. It reminds me a bit of the Xbox vs Playstation thing online: bizarre tribalism which causes people to die on the most inane hills.

I think both are great. My family have owned a number of them. Cats, even more so than dogs IMO, have incredibly distinct personalities and it seems quite random which type you're going to get. It's true, some are aloof and don't seek out human contact at all, whilst others are incredibly affectionate and demanding of your attention.

Cats aren't as intelligent as dogs, but it's untrue that they can't be trained, and they certainly can react to commands and human moods / tone of voice.

Here's my guy Hank literally as I type this. He'll try to do this all day, and then moan if I try to move him.

Echo the sentiments above about cats getting bad reps from people who don't really know what they're talking about.  You just have to learn how to interact with them, they're very rewarding creatures.

Never used to be a cat fan, but adopting this weird moggy that seems to be in a constant state of existential crisis changed that.

I love dogs, and we'll probably get a dog one day. Only a rescue dog though and also only when we have more time and energy to direct their way.

Cats are alright, but dogs are just incredible.

Always grown up with labradors at home, so always assumed I’d get one of those, but a few years ago a stray Jack Russell followed me home from work and he is absolute class. Properly got small dog syndrome, thinks he’s rock hard, but is also the most gentle, loyal, and in tune little thing. About a year after I got him I had a pain in my abdomen, as someone with a crohns-like illness I ignored it, but he would not leave my side and was constantly sniffing me. Turns out it was appendicitis, but I wouldn’t have gone to the hospital after a few days if it wasn’t how he was behaving. Got there just before it ruptured!

He is also just fun and stupid and full of energy, and absolutely loves life.

Dogs can give way more back to an owner, which makes them very kid friendly. But conversely, they are incredibly dumb animals that are very needy and need a lot of looking after.

If you're an adult then cats are better. They are independent and don't need much looking after. You don't need to walk them l, bath them, or trim their nails. If you have a cat flap you don't need to do anything other than put some food and water down twice a day. Cats will still come and sit on your lap and purr and let you stroke them. It's not like they never want to be near you.

I've never owned a cat but known six or seven really well in my life and all of them have been affectionate, warm, attentive. Always seemed keen for a fuss and attention and keen for human company.

Can’t stand the royal family. Harry’s the only one I have a modicum of respect for cos he’s actually trying to earn some money himself. The rest of them I couldn’t care less if there was a gas leak when the rest of them are at one of their 25 tax funded palaces this Christmas

Our two cats follow us on the walk to school every morning and hang around the playground. Little shits.

Wish my two kids were as enthusiastic about going to school.

Gas leak is a bit harsh but in general this is something I can agree with.

The Queen is a legend and I won't hear a bad word said against her.

I can't stand any of them. Harry especially because he's such a drip.

I do somewhat respect the Queen just for coming from that ****ed up family and seeming like a normal person.

Could agree with the Harry sentiment if he wasn't funded for the majority of his life and he's still retaining control over his Duke title to profit.

Don't know how unpopular this is, but I've realised more and more over the years that I don't like plane travel and planes are often too much hassle than their worth.

I used to be an avid traveller and I still love train or bus journeys and even car journeys, but there's something about sitting in the airport for 2 hours beforehand, the rush of packing, the faff of customs/passport control and getting your baggage and actually going on a plane where even though you can some beauty, it doesn't have the same appeal of staring out  a train/bus window going through beautiful countryside.

Plus I just find planes more stuffy, crowded and unpleasant than trains or buses in general.

I still like to go away with my family, but I let my family choose it all now, whereas I used to be the proactive one making plans for us, but I must admit when I think of overseas travel, it often ends up with me thinking about whether I can really be arsed with the actual plane journeys.

Same, mate.

Really can’t be arsed with flying any more - getting to the airport half a day before you need to leave, and then the actual process of getting airside and then getting funnelled onto the plane.

We generally take cruises when going on holiday, now - leisurely drive down to Southampton - as many cases and bags as you want, chuck your car keys to someone to park your car and take your luggage on…and your holiday starts about 3 minutes after you get up the gangway. It’s great, I can leave my house and about an hour and a half later be on holiday!

Same with coming home - the ship docks about 6am - you get up, have some breakfast and then wander down the gangway to drive home.

Used to fly loads. But haven’t enjoyed the airport or flight aspect of it for a few years now.

Not ideal if we want to go anywhere inland, mind lol
