There was a moment against Atletico (I think) where we were practically playing 3-3-4 to rescue the tie. Atleti counted on us and our slow defenders were trying to catch Griezmann, and Chilwell just sprints past half our team without much acceleration and catches up with Griezmann. His pace is remarkable.

I've been critical of his decision making before but I prefer him over Fuchs atm. He has a good understanding  with both Gray and Albrighton. Needs to start against Newcastle and Southampton.

I said I need a different thread a few weeks back I thought we'd go for Ricardo pereira from Porto who was very good at nice under puel, and just saw we had scouts at the Porto benfica game the other day

what is the left back sitch? Rose, bertrand? who else

No one else worth mentioning I think, if he keeps playing how he is now and improving he may start for us after this tournament.

Ashley Young back in favour.

ah and just thought of Delph whos looking pretty good atm. Perhaps in the long term Chilwell may get a chance but definitely not in the upcoming World cup

Chillwell offers more going forward and gives us real glimmers of magic and a future England international, but defensively he still has quite a but to learn, he can be pulled out of shape.  For now I feel much more relaxed with Fuchs at the back as he's an old master. A changing on the guard definitely in progress but Fuchs just edges it for me for this season. That throw is a serious weapon.

I think long term obviously it's chilwell but imo puel would rather play him as a wing back but I don't think he wants to play simpson as a wing back. I like the suggestion of naughton at swansea. Or play Albrighton as the wing back. I agree that there are concerns defensively with chilwell but he is better going foward than fuchs.

Well Fuchs is in New York again lol Man must be bloody exhausted! I know they travel in luxury but still...

I think we will be seeing a lot more of Chillwell going forwards, Fuchs will be fine with that i'd imagine, he's got a Premier League win and a Champions League campaign out of us and he's very focused on his future business deals. Couldn't ask for better back up right now really could we.

Chilwell is great going forward and just needs to concentrate on the final ball, however as a full back I still think he lacks a good positional brain, often see him ball watching but if that improves we will have a top talent on our hands....

I love Fuchs really do......but he has had his time. Chilwell should be first choice now he is doing a cracking job and will go on to great things for us.

Any views on why Fuchs' performances have dropped so much?  I can't believe his legs have gone - he's only 31.  Seems to be more about bad decision-making to me, like getting in the wrong position, tackling at the wrong moment or just taking risks that he doesn't have to.  I was a big fan of his in the title-winning season, but he's not played well for quite a while now.

I heard he’s  been taking tips of Paul Konchesky

It's been like this for so long though, arguably back to the tail end of the title season. Seems a top lad and obviously great for the squad, but he can't be trusted to play the role anymore. Chilwell certainly seems to be splitting opinion but there is no doubt Fuchs is no longer up to it.

Fuchs has been great for us. A huge part of the title-winning side where he rarely put a foot wrong. Unfortunately, he seems to have aged incredibly quickly for someone that's only 31. It just seems to be lack of concentration for the most part. Perhaps he still has an eye on the states. Shame to see the title-winning side being broken up piece by piece but that's football. Has to be Chilwell now for me. Hopefully, Fuchs can teach him how to take a long throw. Great penalty last night. Both are very one footed Chilwell looks like he could be England level but needs to work a bit on his weaker foot IMO.

I think it's a bit of a quandary. I don't see that much between the two. If Fuchs got his mojo back, he'd clearly be the better player (31 is too young to write a player off, and FT just loves a goat to scape), but flipside is that Chilwell will get better.

Chilwell needs regular football to advance, but I'm not going to be gnawing my fingernails to the quick if Fuchs is in the team. We're lucky to have two good players in this position.
