Borussia Dortmund youth co-ordinator Lars Ricken has hit back after doubts were cast over the age of youth sensation Youssoufa Moukoko from within the club.

Moukoko, aged 12, is being tipped for stardom in Germany after shining for Dortmund’s Under-17 side as well as Die Mannschaft’s Under-16 side.

Last season Moukoko - who moved to Germany from his birth country, Cameroon, in 2014 - scored 33 times in 15 games for Dortmund's Under-15s.

Bumped up again this year, he has continued to impress despite the considerable age difference; he has bagged 16 goals in seven games for the Under-17s thus far this term.

Some have looked upon the youngster with scepticism however, including BVB’s Under-23 manager, Timo Preus.

"With Youssoufa, I can imagine that his age has only been guessed,” Preus told Spox.

"Maybe in reality he is one or two years older. But certainly he is not 17. For him that is very difficult. There is nothing to blame him for, the boy is not cheating or anything."

"He is 12 years old,” Ricken told Ruhr Nachrichten. "That is a fact and there is no doubt about it. Some media reports about him have been disappointing.

"He plays in our U17s because we believe that he belongs to this age class in a sporting way.

"He plays in a very good team and has team mates, who support him well."

Moukoko's father has previously spoken on the subject of his son's age, declaring: "His age is right. Immediately after he was born I registered him at the German consulate in Yaounde. We have a German birth certificate."

Ever our immigration officers wouldn't fall for him being 12.

It’s almost admirably impressive that even in a football related post about a kid playing in Germany you’ve managed to mention immigration lol
