Coup under way in Zimbabwe?

Recommended Posts

Its not immediately obvious that these old military heads taking power is a better outcome than the younger members of Zanu-pf from what I can see.  Maybe the next generation has some fresh ideas.
Everyone is just out to enrich themselves. Fact.

When you've lived in Liberia for a year just 2 months after about 15 years of civil war, travelled frequently for work to Rwanda, Eastern Congo and Burundi (pretty much during fighting) and been evacuated from Lesotho due to a 'coup'... Oh and Haiti pre and post earthquake... Cambodia, Kosovo...

Then... Yeah... You end up being a tad complacent!!

Oh forgot Tajikistan... Lovely place!!

Yeah but you’ve never been to Nambia.

Wouldn't want to, either. It's full of spoiled brats who don't want any construction projects near them.

Yep, a big problem those namby-pamby Nambian Nimbys.

That's the LAST place I thought they'd ever have a coup

The BBC are reporting this is about Mugabe's attempts to put his Wife in the chair, rather than the obvious choice of the VP. It's incredible that it has taken this long for someone to have enough power to take Mugabe on.

Mugabe is apparently safe in his residence.

Isn't it true that his place, reportedly a palace, is very near to the centre of a poverty-stricken location?..

I happened to be listening to an old Flintoff, Savage and the Ping Pong Guy podcast last night about terrorism in sport and Freddie was speaking about the Cricket World Cup in around 02/03 when they were due to tour Zimbabwe as part of the group stage. Practically none of the players wanted to play and they received very credible death threats were they to arrive at the ground and play.

Flintoff said that to make it even worse Mugabe lived practically next door to the ground and there was a chance he would turn up to shake the players' hands etc. They even offered to draw up a 10 mile exclusion zone around the ground including helicopters and the army. Utterly ridiculous.

Or because Zimbabwe deserves better than a corrupt individual and someone who directs the army to kill its own citizens whilst remaining to live a luxury lifestyle, at the expense of an ailing country that deserves better in control of the nation?

I mentioned his residence and apparent location initially to point out how he's perceived as by many as leader of that stricken country - blatantly ignorant, whilst only thinking about himself etc.

Sounds like the military have called a motion of "phew, what a bitch".

All that other stuff was OK, Bob, but you're just taking the piss now

About 20 years too late, not that a new regime will be any better.

Socialism replacing socialism. No improvement expected......

Is this a real coup of just a bit of a coup?

They claim they are not after Mugabe himself but the 'criminals' around him.

i THINK they are trying to stop some sort of dynastic succession and the recent people's favorite to replace mugabe was purged from  Zanu leaving his wife, never far from the word corruption, as favorite to take over which kind of undermines any 'democratic' voting process, of course....

A well-written, cautiously optimistic article about Zimbabwe in the moment and in the future:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/nov/19/zimbabwe-is-not-the-banana-republic-of-western-fancy-after-mugabe-it-can-thrive

I've never been to Zimbabwe - or even Africa, bar a day in Tangiers 35 years ago - so cannot vouch for its accuracy, but it reads well.

I hope they are able to engineer some sort of peaceful transition to a better life for their country....we'll know within a few days, I suspect.

Agreed. Probably concerned about his family and what will become of them. Its simple, agree to leave for amnesty for you and your family. Probably will have millions stashed somewhere. Perhaps he is delaying until he can get his cash out the country etc.
