What things that are ludicrous now, will become culturally acceptable in the future.

Given how far civil rights has moved in this century alone, where will we be in the future? Will we continue forwards or backwards? Will we be debating rights for people who want to transition to being a dolphin in the same light we debate lgbt issues now?

I reckon in a decade or three it will be considered morally unacceptable and a slightly weird concept to eat animals.

This was my thought too. In Vitro meat will make it possible to consume meat without making an animal suffer, choosing to do so will be seen as something backward.

But we need to something in our plastic bags....

Meat eaters will definitely be considered barbaric in the future, probably be looked at in the same way we look at people involved in the slave trade as society starts to move to animals as having rights in the same way humans should. Hopefully I'm long gone by the time it happens.

I can see the long held "innocent until proven guilty" standpoint going as well when it comes to crimes like rape and sexual assault. We are already starting to see ridiculous attempts at prosecution by the CPS.

Whether we continue forward or backward will depend on the strength of the challenges the future gives us IMO - the tougher and more people are imperilled by them, the bigger the chance of regress rather than progress, as when the chips are down humans do tend to resort to animalistic-style looking after their own survival as a priority.

The more advances in biotechnology made the more opportunity people will get to change themselves from their original appearance and with that will come more acceptance of doing so rather than the belief that your identity is set in stone when you are born, I hope.

Also agree with the meat thing - the moment an artificial substitute comes in that is identical to meat in taste, texture and nutritional content (and I think that not far away) that will be a game-changer.

Advances in technology and a more connected world will eventually lead to a scenario where either the idea of the nation-state changes, or the unrest tears civilisation apart.

Edit: Thanks for the interesting topic - the future is so much more interesting than the past IMO.

Despite the Clergyman’s Daughter in No 10 expressing her preference for the continuing prohibition of Cannabis, we will eventually catch up with the modern world and cannabis will be legalised, sold and taxed.

Genetic advances will allow humans to be able to opt for (and grow / regrow) body parts, so people will have perfect skin, eyesight, heads of hair and teeth, well into old age.

Baldy, wrinkled, toothless people wearing glasses will be seen out less and less.

With there being a fair few speculations about what new innovations we may witness, I think I'll post this talk which I found fascinating. It goes into detail about the future and what change it will likely bring.

Talk starts at 45s.

Oh, and the idea of a Universal Basic Income - which is anathema right now in a lot of circles - will end up having to be implemented to prevent mass unrest as technology takes over a lot of various careers.

Yeah I think eating meat is the next big thing to be a taboo but as others have said it will be at least 2/3 generations away (hopefully).

As for cultural acceptance, it could be deemed socially accpetable to do ALL socialising online, not leave your house for months and become self contained by way of working from home / ordering everything online / socialising from home (albeit I know its technically possible to do all three already).

Universal basic income is a brilliant idea if implemented properly and in the right proportions. It's the only way to end poverty once and for all within a nation in my opinion.

This is a good one.

Things like conversation could become rare as technology takes over, I think a large part of the population will become hermits - especially if UBI arrives.

If anyone hasn't read this book it's absolutely fantastic. Mind blowing.

Well, beyond liking the idea I actually do think at some point in the future it will become a matter of necessity rather than one of generosity.

Won't happen because most of the people with most of the money got there by greed.

They won't do it out of the goodness out of their hearts, but as I said I think the day will come where they have to do it or risk so much societal unrest that things collapse and they lose everything anyway. The decision will be out of their hands.

Hmmm, more likely it would happen because they need someone to buy their wares/services. Money is like blood; if it's just lying there, out of the system, you're dead.
