People have really put Israel down as the biggest threat to global peace when Russia is on the list, which over the last decade has invaded two countries, annexing parts of both as well as threatening the UK, USA, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Poland, Romania, and the Baltic states (as well as others) with nuclear assault?

That's mad.

For me it is either America or Russia.

Depends on how you view US foreign policy and if you believe Israel has sway over it, I guess.

For me though, there isn't a single nation that stands above all the others in terms of threatening world peace: all of the big boys play the filthy game of realpolitik in their own way and all of them have the nuclear capability to make life difficult if they wanted to.

It's the institutional rivalry between nation-states that's the biggest threat to world peace, not the states themselves.

Not all of them annex parts of their neighbour's territory.

America may not, but they certainly install puppets all around the world. That is just as dangerous.

Nope, they instead exert power in more subtle but no less effective ways - like, for instance, pouring money into a continent in exchange for political sway (China) or establishing a network of military bases in "friendly" territories across the world (the US).

It's still assuming control, it's just less blatant and less likely to be front-page news because (for the most part) shots aren't fired.

Global safety is nothing to do with countries and man-made boundaries. Wars make no difference and a nuclear war is incredibly unlikely.

The biggest threat to global safety is each individual's attitude.

I'd extend this to the attitude of entire groups or nation-states tbh, but yeah - the biggest threat is those who can't or won't suppress their inbuilt instinct to whack the next guy over the head with a rock just to prove a point.

I don't disagree but I think the attitude of "I'm fine jack" or "I don't care" with regards to climate change and other everyday population problems is far more of a risk to global safety than war.

You'll get no disagreement from me there.

The Earth could do more damage to human civilisation than the very worst excesses of humanity and continued complacency towards that is a massive risk.

I have to disagree here, mac. Just recall most of the horrible events that happened after WW2 and you will find one BIG consistent figure looming around like radioactive waste. and that's the US government.
