Charlie Adam: Stoke players 'getting away with murder for a long time'

Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam says "four or five" of his team-mates have been "getting away with murder for a long time" at the relegated club.

The Potters have gone 13 games without a win and their 10-year stay in the Premier League was ended on Saturday.

"It's embarrassing because we should never have been in that situation," Adam, 32, told BBC Radio 5 live.

"As a group you have your seven or eight who try their hardest to make it work and we failed."

The Scot, who joined Stoke from Liverpool in 2012, added: "A lack of discipline from certain players has been embarrassing.

"I'll be honest for the supporters, I think some players have been getting away with murder for a long time and it's difficult for supporters. It's not just one or two, I think there are four or five that could be counted."

Stoke recorded three successive ninth-placed finishes under Mark Hughes, which was followed by 13th last season.

Forward Marko Arnautovic, plus long-serving striker Jonathan Walters and midfielder Glenn Whelan, left the club last summer and there were heavy defeats early this term, including a 7-2 at Manchester City, 5-1 against Tottenham and 5-0 at Chelsea.

Record signing Giannelli Imbula, who cost £18.3m from Porto in 2016, has spent this season on loan at French side Toulouse, while former Barcelona forwards Ibrahim Afellay and Bojan Krkic have been out of favour, with Krkic sent on loan to La Liga side Alaves.

Hughes was dismissed in January after an FA Cup third-round loss to League Two Coventry, which followed a run of five defeats in seven league games that had left the club in the bottom three.

Former Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert succeeded Hughes and presided over a 2-0 win over Huddersfield in his second match in charge, but that remains his only victory to date.

It is not yet known if Lambert, who signed a two-and-a-half year deal, will continue as boss - a break-clause in his contract means both parties have the option to part ways at the end of the season.

Speaking on the Monday Night Club, Adam said: "The biggest thing for us is we never replaced Marko.

"You can lose players, but when you lose players who can win you a game you are going to struggle. As a group of players we should hang our heads in shame because that club should never be relegated.

"We know what's going to happen. People will lose their jobs and we're the ones to blame for that."

Goalkeeper Jack Butland has criticised the club's "farcical" transfer dealings and said there were "players you cannot rely on".

Adams added: "We've spent a lot of money but you need to do your homework and have the right characters coming in.

"The biggest problem now is social media - because players cheat themselves. When you go home from training you should not be able to go for extra sessions with personal trainers. You're conning yourself, your team-mates and the club."

Although it's a bit rich him talking about discipline.

I'm not sure this is as issue at Leicester. Mahrez might be one player "getting away with murder" given we all expect him to go, but I genuinely don't think that is the issue with our players. If anything the noises we are hearing are that the players think training is too low intensity and that Puel is not giving them enough stick for their performances. Currently I believe that sub consciously the players aren't putting in their best performances as they suspect he will go at the end of the season, and are likely hoping he does.

I think Puel is a classic case of a manager not connecting with the players or fans at a club, which can happen even to elite level coaches. Carlo Ancelotti (league winner in three countries, 2x Champions League with Milan) wasn't doing very well with Bayern, but Heynckes who came back in turned them round completely. Heynckes knew the style of play and performances that both players and fans craved for, which was in contrast to Ancelotti.

Fans where underwhelmed with Puel upon his appointment for the reasons we are seeing now. He had a great start, but changed too much and for the worse.

Our owners are brilliant and I personally suspect that as soon as the season is over, he will be out of the door.

I keep reading these articles on Stoke with a worry that there are certain similarities.  Butland made similar points in an interview.

"There's been transfers that aren't even part of the squad for all kinds of reasons, whether it be discipline, whether it be lack of performance," Butland, 25, said.

"You've got to look at that - what decisions are being made and the type of characters."

We're doing the same spending huge sums of money on guff who add nothing to the team and can't be relied upon (Musa, Mendy, Slimani, Iheanacho, question marks over Silva and Iborra).

I read that as they should be putting it all in on the training pitch with their team mates and so are too tired to do any extra training. Could be wrong .

I feel at least like Musa, Silva, Iborra and Kelechi have had good attitudes. Slim does care. No idea about Mendy

I think our biggest problem is bringing players in who then dont know why they've been brought here. Bringing in players who then dont play

This is partly due to management sticking inexplicably with the old guard. Also due to us changing managers repeatedly so there is no coherent plan for the squad, no over arching manager's plan/philosophy

One thing is certain is we need one manager and we need to stick with him

If we get rid of Puel we need to picka fuching winner

If we keep Puel I want to be confident every player in the starting 11 is being picked on merit and according to a playing style. Havent been assured of that lately, but in Puel's defence, injuries have been catastrophic

I would suspect that it is messing up their match preparation, if you are supposed to have an intense session on Thursday light session/tactics on Friday  to be ready for the game Saturday and people are doing private gym sessions on Friday, then they will not have sufficient recovery time for the match and the nutritionist won't have factored it in to their meal plans. Then they will not be able to perform at their peak on Saturday. Sports science is all about getting the body fueled to hit peak energy during the game, and allowing sufficient recovery time, likewise if people are hitting the gym the day after the game then it will impact recovery time.

When Adam is talking about discipline then he means sticking to the training regime plans set out by the coaches and sports science people not on pitch discipline. I also suspect that some of these gripes are because players are doing theses extra gym sessions for aesthetic reasons (working on those abs and guns) and not professional.

All this boils down to us having a massive overhaul of the squad and if the players don't like it, tough they can leave. I'm sure the younger ones will be very happy to be part of the future Leicester City.

I can't wait for the revolution to begin and I bet a lot of the fringe players can't wait to leave either.

Let's get rid of all the misbought players wasting their time and our resources and replace them with a clear vision.

I'm this respect Puel is probably the man for the job and our chief scout is probably the man to find the players, if you take off your hate tinted glasses you'll see that Eduardo Macia has done pretty good so far.

And you'll hate the next bit, Rudkin is doing pretty good in sorting out the signings. Remember he doesn't choose the players he sorts out the contracts and most of the time we've got our man or kept our man.

Don't shoot me.

I agree, but I wouldn’t put any question mark over Iborra. He oozes class. Yes he makes mistakes, but he’s done well with limited opportunities.

I think also we’ll see a different Iheanacho with a pre season in him.

Please learn from Stoke and Southampton’s (and that doesn’t mean keep Puel, far from it) mistakes.

I don't believe having a massive overhaul would be a good idea. Signing twenty players in a single window rarely ever works, if ever.

We just need a manager who is tactically astute but also capable of adapting his tactics for the good of the club. We need a manager who is capable of managing a TEAM of PEOPLE, they are not just footballers, it isn't just about coaching. We need a manager who has the balls to make decisions that might upset people and we need a manager who knows how to manage a situation like that. We need a manager that knows how to integrate new signings successfully and we need a manager that can, or knows a guy who can successfully identify talented footballers that would be a good fit for the team.

If we can get a manager of the above stated calibre, than four or five quality signings should suffice.
