WOW to all the over reactions on here to people suggesting anyone who prefers looking elsewhere than Traore... is somewhat deluded and demanding someone as good as Mahrez

My point is, I'd prefer we look for a different type of winger than Traore.

I believe we have enough pace in the squad already.

I think we are lacking in players who can take a corner, free-kick or can pick a through ball.

With Mahrez leaving, I believe that the RW is a perfect opportunity to sign a player with those qualities.

No deluded talk of thinking we can replace Mahrez. No bashing of Traore. Just an opinion that having a balanced team is important.

Thought we had spent millions on Maddison to do all of that. You cant have too much pace in a team - ridiculous!

If Maddison gets injured?

Bit silly to rely so heavily on one player to provide those type of attributes.

I'd like at least 2 players in our starting 11 who can take a decent corner or free-kick and pick a through ball.

RW would be a decent position to fill that role.

Pace is obviously a great asset, but we need other attributes too as many teams can negate pace by sitting deep.

To be fair - Chelsea have form for discarding young players who go onto become world beaters (plus plenty who don’t!)

he has looked promising when I have seen him on the telly

Like KDB!!!

This move is exciting, hope it’s real!

really like the look of this kid.

he is no Dany N'Guessan though.

If we’re going by that video, let’s just keep Gray and Diabate. Really didnt think there was much of special in that clip. But I could easily be wrong.

I had similar thoughts, perhaps the good bits were edited out as he was MoM according to the uploader.

It's always handy to have more than one who can create stuff and to put all of the pressure to create on Maddison in his first Premier season is a lot of unnecessary pressure on the lad. If Silva can start playing some incisive through balls and Albrighton can whip balls in more it would help but last season we really relied on Mahrez & Vardy offensively too heavily, we have Gray & Diabate who are already pace merchant wingers without a whole lot else so I'd prioritise trickery & creativity over more pace if it's Mahrez were having to replace.

This. Far bigger clubs than us get by on this sort of model, buying the best young talent and selling them on after a few years of development- Dortmund, Leipzig, Lyon, etc. etc.

It's a model that works if you're an attractive enough proposition to get the best players- hopefully we are. Just don't get too attached to anyone.

This, this and this again.

We’re in a great position now to compete for some of maybe not the best young players in the world but certainly the next level down with players who have great potential to be anything like Maddison, etc.

We’ll never get anywhere signing players like Iborra for £12m who has zero upside and cane here as an ageing squad player. Much better to invest in the best scouting possible and bring in young players who outgrow us after a couple of years and we either have a batch that mature together and compete or sell for a big profit and start the process again.

As you say it doesn’t do the likes of Dortmund, Monaco and Lyon any harm and I’d like us to be in a position to compete for signings with these kind of players.

Can be dangerous though.  Newcastle had a transfer ban on signing players over 25 purely for the development and resale aspect and got relegated because of it.

I like the exciting young prospects we have but every team needs experience aswell.

Didn't really rate him in his very brief time at Chelsea but am also encouraged by Chelsea's ability to uncover gems and then let them go rival clubs

I don't know much about him but he does seem to score a lot of goals.  In 147 career appearances he has scored 55 times.

Pretty impressive for a winger.

Compare that to Mahrez - 333 appearances 83 goals.  Or Demarai - 178 games 14 goals.

I'm not saying he's better than Riyad by any means, he's not.  I'm just using those figures to show that he scores a lot of goals.

Stats slightly skewed by what leagues the players play in

No, not really.

These are career appearances and goals including Mahrez' goals for Le Havre (Ligue II / 147 apps and Championship with LCFC 19 apps) and Demarai's goals for Birmingham in the Championship - 78 apps.

Gray has 8 in 72 in the championship and 4 in 77 in the premier league simply not good enough we need to get rid.

I might expect a few more from Demarai, but my point was not to rubbish Grey or anyone else but simply to point out that Traore scores an awful lot.

i'm more inclined to believe this is the kind of winger Puel will go for, offers something different with his height compared to our other wingers

although google seems to think he's 5"11, seems taller to me!

Bertrand Traore is actually a dead ball specialist. He used to be a great passer of the ball, but seems to have evolved his dribbling skills more lately... The best dribbler not named Neymar in France.

So we go from a guy who has just about the best first touch in the Premier League to a fella who’s first touch is arguably not particularly great? He’s a very different player - not sure if he’s not quite similar to Gray in some ways. Would prefer somebody with a better all round game I think. But hey ho I won’t be jumping off any bridges in despair and fury if he signs.

Not sure comparing him to gray is fair. Didn't Traore score more goals last season alone than Gray has in his entire professional football career? Both the same age also.

‘Quite similar to Gray in some ways’ comparative in terms of style of play rather than goal scoring stats.
