Lots of promise shown by our youngsters last year and some have continued to impress in Pre-season.

Who do you think will be the next young star to breakthrough this season and establish himself as a permanent fixture in the match day 18?

Hopefully some will get loans and get experience but who will be our net to breakthrough like Hamza did last season?

Josh Knight

Sam Hughes

Callum Elder(although he is 23!)

Darnell Johnson

George Thomas

Leyton Ndukwu

Josh Gordon

Conor Tee

Alexandru Pascanu

Louis Ramsay

Kieran Dewsbury-Hall

Callum Wright

Leandro Martis

Raul Uche

Ryan Loft

Admiral Muskwe

Plus others no doubt will be pushing to make an impression.

With Barnes Iverson and More our on loan I can't remember the last time we had so much potential in our youngsters.

Personally I think Leyton Ndukwu will be the one but there are many to choose from! Conor Tee is so impressing the right people.

Johnson seems to be next by default for the First Team. I'd imagine Elder might be sniffing around as well.

A few of those ought to be on loan if they don't figure into First Team plans soon - Hughes, Gordon, Thomas.

Hoping that it will be Layton Ndukwu or Josh Knight myself as I knew them both from a young age.

Although I'd be happy to see as many as possible from your list. Would be great to see three or four home grown players break through to our first team.

Keep an eye out for Josh Eppiah....he broke into the U23s last season...he's 19...and he's like a quicker Mahrez....excellent player

I was really impressed with Gordon last night but he could do with a loan spell at championship or league one level maybe before he could be Premier League ready

Josh Gordon and Calum Elder are both 24 in January.

Whilst it's unfair to write either of them off history would say they'll never be PL level.

Yeah I've been watching him for a while now he will turn good

I thought that Elder was going back to Wigwam :dunno:

Interesting article on the BEEB about Premier League break throughs. Good to see Madders getting some recognition but I wouldn't fancy the chances of any Man City or Chelsea youngsters. When was the last time that Chelsea had a kid make it ?? John Terry ??

I wouldn't call Hamza a "breakthrough" - he had a couple of first team matches last season, but that mainly out of the lack of other options when Ndidi and/or Iborra weren't available for a brief period (and King gone out on loan, plus James injured), not because Puel was truly favouring him.

Our record with youngsters making it is rather shocking. Apart from Heskey and most recently King, not much to boast about on that front.

Chilwell could turn into the new Leighton Baines, though - and that's my hope.

Maddison has looked promising in pre-season and I wish him well. Big fan.

Other than that, I liked what I saw from Gordon against Valencia and Johnson and Ndukwu have also left a lasting impression.

Then again, I guess we're not the only ones in that boat. Plenty of Premier League clubs can't or don't want to develop their own youngsters, instead prefer to buy abroad.

24 is quite old tbf (for this topic at least) but in Gordon’s defence we only signed him about 18 months ago I think. It’s not like he has been with us for years and hasn’t fulfilled potential, he could still be improving but who knows whether that will end up with us having a PL player on our hands. My point is I don’t think the club would have signed a 22 year old from non league if they thought he had no chance of being good enough for us one day

Whilst Puel is great at giving the kids a chance, I hope this doesn’t mean he will keep giving chances just because they’re young. For example, if Diabate doesn’t progress then hopefully Puel won’t persist with him and he’ll give someone like Ndukwu a chance instead.

Feeling really positive about the youngsters coming through. As someone posted the other day, the step up might not be as difficult as we think as the likes of Rashford, Alexander-Arnold, Winks, Tom Davies, Loftus-Cheek, etc have all looked good in the PL.

Yet some of our fans think Chillwell and Gray are crap.

My prediction:

18/19: Johnson, Elder, Ndukwu

19/20: Hughes, Barnes, Thomas

20/21: Knight, Tee, Eppiah

When Rashford was promoted to the first team he wasn’t even Man Utd’s best Youth striker at the time. These kids just need a chance to shine I feel. Look at Hamza! He looks a completely different player to the one we saw struggle at Burton .

Yes they are a liability.

If any of f the Academy players are no better then we might as well close it down and spend the money on scouting from lower leagues and other Academies.
