BREXIT BOTHER Premier League worried Brexit will harm league’s global popularity and damage competitive nature
There are fears the next N'Golo Kante could be forced to move elsewhere in Europe if restrictions on signing foreign players are put in place

Premier League bosses are becoming increasingly concerned Brexit will seriously impact the league’s competitiveness and global popularity.

The government has been urged to abolish all restrictions on signing foreign players, or risk missing out on some of the best talent in Europe.

An exclusive by The Daily Telegraph has revealed the Premier League fear the next N’Golo Kante would not be granted a work permit after Brexit.

With just over six months until the UK leaves the European Union, the Premier League hierarchy are still waiting for clarification on a number of key issues.

Namely, they want to know if there will be a restriction on signing European players after Brexit and if clubs will have to fill a homegrown-player quota.

There are fears the Football Association will use Brexit as an opportunity to increase the opportunities for young English talent – made more prevalent after Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate bemoaned a lack of English talent at his disposal.

It has been accepted there it will be almost impossible for clubs to sign European players under the age of 18 like Arsenal did with Hector Bellerin and Cesc Fabregas, or how Manchester United did with Paul Pogba and Gerard Pique.

Their case is supported by statistics proving football should be treated as a special case; the Premier League generates over £3billion in tax for the Treasury and directly employs over 12,000 people.

The main of contention lies in the acquiring of work permits for top players.

According to a study by Harvard data scientist Laurie Shaw, 591 of the 1,022 players signed by top-flight clubs in Premire League history with passports for a country in the EEA would not have qualified for a work permit.

NâGolo Kante and Riyad Mahrez joined Leicester City for relatively low transfer fees and helped the team to a Premier League win in 2016. But Brexit terms may mean they struggle to compete for top-level signings

But Brexit terms may mean they struggle to compete for top-level signings
Shaw’s research shows that less wealthy clubs would suffer the most. Players like Kante and Riyad Mahrez would not have qualified for a work permit according to Shaw.

Most players at clubs such as Leicester City do not feature regularly for top-60 international teams – meaning the competitive balance would skew in favour of far wealthier clubs who can afford to pay bigger transfer fees for players.

Good or Bad? Would it help the England team? Seems to me we weren't that successful before this foreign influx really got going.

Yeah we benefited with getting Mahrez & Kante but there seems for every successful import there are way more that fail to make an impact or are probably no better than their British peers. On the other hand if this came in the price of British players would likely rocket way more than they've done already in comparison.

Some journalists will do anything to portray Brexit as armagheddon.  How many African players are there in the PL?  Doesn't seem to stop them being signed.

Non story,

Yes, that infamously remain supporting paper the Daily Telegraph, they'll do anything to portray Brexit as "Armageddon." Traitors, enemy of the people, crush the saboteurs etc etc.

Tell you what, how about newspapers don't report any organisations fears for after "Independence Day?". Shall we suppress any organisations views that have fears about the uncertainty of what will happen?

Personally we all know money talks, and if anyone can wriggle out of such regulations the Premier League may well speak up and use their worldwide brand/power.

The government will not refuse entry to people who will pay shed load of taxes. They are not gonna turn down that kind of enormous tax revenue.

With the money that the PL pays players it will not be affected at all. For a start how many Kantés actually get to the PL? Most foreign players are already "big" in their own leagues.

bollox story

Governments don't turn away people who are going to make a positive contribution to the treasury.

We might see fewer average foreign players in the lower leagues though and that should be a good thing.

Hopefully we can lobby to lift restrictions on South America as well, good scouting systems should be rewarded.

I'm not suggesting suppressing anything, I'm just saying that it is a laughably sensationalist  story that's all.  Take it all in if you want.

Please move this to general chat.

Why?

It's about the possible affect on the PL, Leicester City are in the PL so it may well affect them as the article suggests.

But those journalists you refer to don't usually work at the Torygraph, afaik.

Might still be a non-story of course, but the reality is devaluation has already reduced PL spending power abroad, in the same way it has clearly increased food prices in the shops.

And the low pound has boosted exports but that is by the by.

PL spending abroad is hindered by the fact that foreign clubs know that the PL is awash with money and put the price up accordingly.  There definitely seems to be premier league premium and clubs don't help themselves by paying it.

There should be a second in/out referendum imo.

Reckon a majority of pro-Brexit voters didn't research the potential costs of leaving the EU prior to voting..

That's their problem not mine.

If we moved threads because they changed from the original intent we'd  be moving a lot of topics. Should we merge those that get filled with puns to the joke thread?

No because nobody barring the left are making noises about it.

Thinks will continue as normal, big business will thrive, football will continue.

And the world 5 th biggest economy in the world, would be free after letting unelected people rule it for so long.

Came here to talk football, got involved in politics, so to answer the question, no one will give a shit, if it even happens at all, because may the remainer, will do Brexit just in name
