Root canal filling

My dentist has said I might need one. :o

Thing is, a couple of folk I know who have had them in the past, told me they wouldnt recommend it and suggest I have the tooth out instead.

What's the thoughts amoungst my fellow FTers? Anyone had one and it has been fine?

Had 2, they've been fine, second one hurt like a bitch though, could actually feel them pull the nerve out as it was infected. If you have them out you either have to have very expensive replacements, the ones where they sort of screw the tooth into the gum, or get a plate to have them on, which I've been told is annoying as ****. Or just have no teeth and enter the gumming business.

Ive had one and didn't feel a thing. Injections to numb the area and the work took about 30 mins. Honestly felt no pain. My dentist (Glenfield) is a magician. Never feel pain with him.

I've never yet had root canal work so cannot comment on that.

I do have a plate, though, and don't find it annoying at all - you need to make sure it fits OK and it then feels odd for a few days before you get used to it.....but fine ever since.

Also have an unfilled gap after another extraction, but will need to have a few more removed before I get into serious "gumming". :D

I was given the option of one after I broke a tooth before I had braces, had the tooth out instead as the orthodontist was comfortable with moving teeth around. Unless your situation is similar to this, keep the tooth no matter what. Having it removed causes issues for the teeth either side and below. If you have to have the tooth out, replace it with something, whether that be a bridge or an implant. Last thing you want is the teeth next to the missing tooth tilting inwards and ruining your speech and bite.

I expected this to be a thread about how boring Puel's football is. I guess I shouldn't be so happy that it isn't.

Had one and it was very painful but did the trick in clearing the infection and then it came back a year later and had to have the tooth pulled. Only tooth I’ve had extracted so doesn’t effect me too much.

I had the option given to me to have root canal work done or have the tooth taken out.

Opted for the latter as it's one of the back teeth so not on show. Plus it was cheaper!

Made such a difference as well - don't feel any pain at all any more, even when eating and barely notice the gap is there.

Just finished having the permanent crown put on my root canal. Did have a minor complication with a 'phoenix abscess' developing the day after the root canal, but luckily it popped by itself, had some antibiotics and it was fine. The complication could have potentially led to root canal failure though, and a re-do root canal has a lower success rate. Things to consider are price, location, and importance of the tooth. I'd do it again. Implants aren't forever should you wish to get one in the future post extraction.

I've had three root canal fillings with different results.  The first went OK (but took ages), the tooth is still there.  The second didn't work and the procedure took an hour and a half on that one.  The tooth was giving me hell so although the dentist offered to have another go I declined and had the tooth extracted  The third one didn't work either (and I was sent to a specialist in root canal work for that one) and I had to have the tooth extracted.

I'm sure that others will have had a better experience than I but I've no great faith in the procedure.

We need a thread about Odontophobia and how to manage it. I have a severe fear of dentistry resulting from being made to visit the school dentist who used to visit junior schools back in the day. The school had a special chair brought in for the sessions with the dentist and I am not exaggerating when I say that there were straps and buckles on the armrests so that a fearful or nervous kid couldn't reach out and grab hold of anything. If you needed any treatment, as I did, a rubber bite bung, which had a hole for air/gas to be breathed in, was stuck between my teeth and I was gassed into unconsciousness. I distinctly remember the smell of the Nitrous Oxide, the feeling of everything around me becoming a haze and far away. So utterly out of any control, it was terrifying.

Then the blood in my mouth afterwards... I was 11 years old. Bastards.

My teeth are quite poor now as I have never been able to face the dentist since.

Thanks for all the feedback peeps.

I've had it out. On balance I think it was the right choice though my dentist seemed surprised, especially as I am leaving the gap.

Ok re school dentists. I remember them well. In fact a vast majority of my fillings were carried out by them. My current dentist told me that when I was growing up (1960s) there was more of a culture of carrying out fillings often when unnecessary.

I've had two root canals and they were no worse than fillings. Although the pain in those teeth when they were infected before the treatment was excruciating, suppose it was the nerves dying. Couldn't go longer than a few seconds without holding cold water against the tooth infected or the throbbing would be too much.

I had it done years ago, absolutely no bother at the time, no worse than a filling, but just took longer.

Eventually ( 20 years later ) I had further problems and it was suggested by two dentists it was time to have it taken out.

Replaced it with an implant, which is an incredible procedure which I would thoroughly recommend.

My missus just had root canal work and absolutely no issues either.
