Horse Racing - Should it be banned?

On the day that a horse died in the grand national I wanted to know does anyone have any legitimate reasons why this barbaric excuse for a sport should be allowed? It's just a disgusting abuse of animals in my opinion.

Not going to stick up for it, nor lambasted it ....Easy reasons for me...no horse racing..no horses!!!

we murder each other every four seconds, and we still multiply!!! A murdering moran every 20 seconds..

Horses get a fair crack..we are not umpires of nature,we are not protectors and defenders of all others species of nature,we are just part of it...Good and bad..!!!

History, present and future will show that....No matter how the planet gets fked,it's only our natural instinct...!!!

Whether or if we turn at the edge of the precipice of not....

Sorry for the horse,in this extraordinary accident...Would I prefer to ride horses ,through the nature without, the  on the seat competition probably....but,if  horse has a species, need to be carried through life, then on the back of horse-racing...

First let's solve our human problems...Sorry..

I’ve decided that I’m somewhere in between these two points of view. Yes, there are elements of cruelty to the sport, particular on days like to day, but on the whole the horses appear to be trained and treated well.

Like LinekerLugs says though - OK, brilliant let’s stop it completely. But then you’ll just end up with 50,000 racehorses on your hands that would create further issues. Instead of killing them all for dog food just give them to the poor (Personally I'd like a horse instead of an expensive and non eco friendly car. It would be brilliant, I’d call him Patsy and go on quests).

For me though this is a minor issue, and one of the reasons I utterly loathe PETA. The REAL environmental issue is the fact that rhinos are getting slaughtered to extinction, elephants are still being poached for their ivory (10 million down to 500k in last century, the cheetah population has decreased NINETY THREE PERCENT in the last 100 years, our cousins the orangutans are losing their habitat and being killed for palm oil, our rainforests are being deforested at a rate of knots; and our governments don’t give a shit. That to me is more concerning than most of the petty human wars going on right now.

Racehorses have some of the best veterinary care going... lets ban marathons because a runner has a heart attack.

You don’t generally see this kind of thing in a marathon do you though? Try to think before you write ffs..

No but is there really any need to make the jumps hard and high for entertainment purposes...?

Actually what's wrong with just flat racing?

They’ve reduced and softened them considerably. They used to be stone walls.

No... heart attacks are normally less graphic. Without horse racing these horses would feature a much poorer life

Why not make all races on the flat or reduce the fence sizes? What idiotic point are you trying to make? Horses can have a great life under stables and running races without having to fall so hard they snap their necks in two.

Again, think before you blurt ffs..

The ‘what would happen to all the horses’ argument is definitely one that worries me but I’m sure they could be sold off to owners who would give them a great life if there’s legislation put in place to stop them being destroyed. I’m not normally one for animal rights activism but horse racing to me just seems particularly unnecessary.

Like it or not, horse racing is in industry. Jumps racing is a major part of it. No one wants to see a horse snap its neck jumping a fence. Without horse racing an awful lot of horses will be heading to the knackers yards

Oh yeah, great life they'll have just stood in a field to be ridden twice by some 10 year old girl before they realise sticking any old randomer on a racehorse is stupid cos it's a ****ing racehorse.

If you think a horse can have a better life outside of racing then you're mad
