Wow, fair play and good luck to him.

They were at risk of not qualifying for Europe for the first time since the 60s so he might have a job on his hands.

Amazes me when anything like this is kept quiet these days!

He clearly loves the club, and if anyone screams successful manager it's him!

I thought he'd wait a bit longer, but it's the perfect platform for him to start on, rebuild, develop the youth again and then take his pick of jobs!

Reading an interview with him recently, on the subject of his education in business.

He inferred that he was well prepared for the post career; at the time I thought it to mean that he was applying for his coaching badges.

Player/manager, in today's game, is an insane workload - I'm convinced, however, that if anyone is capable it's him. Fond farewell from the Premier League. What a shame that we'll be forever included on the highlight reels as the day an aging center-back belted one from 30 yards to all but wrap up the league.

this is gonna be boss. always thought he was sound, but for a good 18 months he’s been an absolute liability in their defence. anyone who is quick he just annihilated asap and never got sent off when he should’ve been.

right time to bounce out and an incredibly good position to roll into. be fun to see what happens.

Good luck to him!

Sounds a bit early to opt for a player-manager career, and that at that level.

Time will tell whether he can take the enthusiasm and experience as a player into the managerial role also.

A real shortage of player managers these days.

They were fairly common a while back, begs the question:

Who is the greatest player-manager ever?

Probably Dalglish doing the double with Liverpool in 1985/86 in his last season as a player, first as manager. He even scored the goal that clinched the title at Stamford Bridge.

probably as great a success as Thierry Henry.

Kompany is less naive. Anderlecht despite a poor season for their standards are still a strong side and he's going in with a full preseason whereas Henry took the job whilst Monaco were in trouble.

Doubt he will play that much, I think it makes sense for them to register him to play as he is good enough for that league but I think he'll want to take a step back if he's going to manage. Good player to have around if they need him though.
